I don't know if there's a thread already.

Basically, the government would like Internet Service Providers to monitor all activity on their networks, from all computers belonging to all users. They think it'll be a good way to cut privacy down to nonexistance, but their methodology is completely wrong. They're watching every single thing you do. They will see you log in to MSN and talk to your internet girlfriend. They will see you get on Skype and yell at people on TF2 and ignore the actual conversation you are in at the time. They will know what you're fapping to.

Let's say they actually catch someone pirating something. A poor 14 year old girl who can't afford a CD player downloads a Justin Beiber song with Limewire, the ISP starts sending increasingly threatening emails to her parents until eventually they cut off their service and sue the family for their entire life's savings. Say goodbye to higher education, Sally. Say goodbye to retirement, Mom and Dad.

We can only do so much, as the people shelling out the cash to the ISPs. Even though Internet Petitions usually don't do [parasitic bomb], this is still something to be aware of. We can't just sit here and let the highest bidder run our lives, guys.

Michael Geist, a Canadian professor, has a very good blog dealing with the latest news regarding this: http://www.michaelgeist.ca/

Judging by the more recent events, the European Union - the other major power in the negotiations - is becoming increasingly conflicting with the US, leading to the possibility that they might just get fed up and walk away, or the talks will break down due to clashing interests. Not only that, but emerging powers - India, China (ya rly) and Brazil - seem to be firmly against it and have been calling the US out on it.

If the EU walks away, the US is probably going to be pretty [tornado fang]'d with regards to gaining and keeping any sort of support. Even if the US is willing to compromise and grovel for the EU to get back on board, though, it's likely going to stir up a lot of trouble at the negotiating table. Either way, things aren't looking too good for the US's chances of doing this how they want to.

Oh god, not this [parasitic bomb] again. Ive heard it about some fourm, and on DA. now here? oy vey, it's starting to sound like the plot to Surrogates.

Workshop/DA/YT/Photobucket なにかんがえてるの!?
So its about ass now huh? EVEN THE ASS HAS 'EXCEEDED'!

One mention of LEGENDS and everyone goes batshit.  :\

Yep, every time when someone mentions that game people get energized for an apparent reason whatsoever. It's like this everywhere else, trust me.

It got really messy to find my sprite and comic topic, so it's in my sig.

I'll just download my Music at the Library.
I love how they feel something like this will ever stop anything.

Not to mention it violates privacy. Seriously, doesnt this violate any laws? It has GOT to violate at least ONE law.

Wait what? how? Wasn't Surrogates more about Fatass humans living through robots from their rooms whom can look however they want them to? (such as the obligatory fat guy who lives through a hot young girl robot)

...When Larry the reploid accountant goes maverick of his own accord, he's certainly formidable during tax season, but he isn't going to provide X the challenge needed to make him grow as a warrior and reach his potential.

The villain in that movie was the initial creator of the Surrogates masquerading as a cult leader in order to wipe out all Surrogates in the world and return humanity to the way it once was. That could be what Gaia's referring to.

More like that. Or the part where the US gets extremely paranoid. one of the two.

Movie, or comic?

And honestly, the MOMENT the net starts being policed, we get two things happening.

- Bad things stop happening online
- Good things start happening online

The fact that the net isn't policed, makes it a kind of rogue world where anything goes. Problem is, there isn't a way of policing it without making privacy null. So it's either the land of the free and creative, or Big Brotherville.

But bad things happening on the internet are GOOD.

I'm not letting ACTA ruin my TF2chan.

I mean like pedos and dat kinda stuff. That would pretty much end.

And they'd give some dumbass reason to watch over people, like "cyber-bullying". That one thing where people can get the hell away from it all by simply turning off their computers instead of feeding the trolls more crap and ending up complete wrecks because they were dumb enough to keep listening to the trollmind.

Oh NO! They can't know what I'm fapping to, or that I talk to my internet girlfriend. Big secrets there.

Honestly though,Why would they want to do that? You're saying this as if some man(in this case, THE man) is going to be watching you in a tree outside your window. Paranoid, much?

Honestly, this is pretty much exactly how they worded it. They literally said that all user activity would be monitored.

I mean like pedos and dat kinda stuff. That would pretty much end.

You know what I'm more dissapointed in? Only one 1982 reference in this whole thread!

C'mon people, they already watch your twitter and your facebook, but people just don't wanna share some things.
Of course a more suitable, more reasonable idea should pop up.
I'm pretty darn sure this ain't gonna happen. Those people who look at those catmen will protest.
Then there's always moving to another country.

Uprooting your entire way of life would be a little extreme.

If it passed, I would probably just boycott the internet.

It's not like I wouldn't survive.

inb4 ACTA fails in the end.

Considering all the stupid stuff that already happens online, we're definitely going to have protests, if not riots, over it when it gets signed into law.

To top it off, it's practically the poster-child of "Big-brother" with the only other exception of 1984.

*sigh*

So much for Democracy.

Hi, Totalitarianism! But that's a stretch to say we'll evolve into that. I mean, a Capitalist country has no choice but to evolve into a socialist one anyways, just look at the New Deal era and the 60's.

But I'm getting off-topic here, the point is, ACTA won't get anywhere in this country regarding the internet. The internet will continue to stay as it is and even more. Where maybe using an interactive hologram instead of a monitor would be possible in the future, and etc.

Anyways, it isn't that hard to pull off "Big-Brother" on the net anyways, other people do it all the time through facebook stalking and otherwise. Yes, I know, the reference and quote is out of context but it's relevant, no?

tl;dr ACTA isn't going to get far.

Well the internet is also an easy way to find facts, get quotes, dates and whatnot. Maybe just not pirating things would be enough.

I see you understand the whole facebook stalking thing too, Romantic Fool.

Just... just... what the [tornado fang]?!
I'm glad I don't live there, I mean... Jesus, that's even more retarded than... I dunno, a guy using the death of his brother (and ex-president, who died in a plane crash, along with other big-shots in the government)in order for himself become the president.

Actually, I think you're all making a bit of a fuss out of something which would never escalate to Skynet proportions.

Imagine this. You're worried somebody will be watching YOU. YOU personally, that people will be watching you to see if you do anything.

What's so [tornado fang]ing special about you? Why would the government want to watch every single person who is online all the time? They'll probably monitor your activity if you go on extremist political websites, or watch pedophile porn, but otherwise, why would they even take up their precious time to check what you're doing? Sure, they may make what's pretty much a profile of you, and everytime your name comes up, your online activity will be known. But besides that? People are placing too much importance on themselves.
