as for me, I have a small problem. I recently got a New Flash Drive, and Its installed and ready to go,... but... I cant access it... I cant find it on the "My computer" window. HOW THE [Sigma] do I get to my Flash Drive!?
also, I request that Sigma be made a censor. XD
Seems like we had a problem at the college a few weeks ago where Flash Drives wouldn't be recognized due to some internal software it had.
no, it recognnizes it, the thing is fine, i just cant find a way to ACCESS the drive... theres no icon to it...
I has a computer problem, it's called, at any given time (Or if I nudge my desk, which happens a lot.) my computer will reboot on it's own.
I have formatted my hard drive recently, and so I've eliminated the possibility of software problem. (Though, it only started again after Service Pack 3 was installed.)

It probably doesn't have a file system/isn't partitioned. I don't have a working pc ATM so I can't look up the exact steps

the cable that connects the motherboard to the power supply is probably loose
I've already opened it all up once before and didn't notice anything ajar, but I will check again to make sure.
Um...next time I wake up and before I turn on my computer...tomorrow, ish...
cause right now I'm using my computer, and it's my life.
But thanks for the suggestion, I'll let ya know if it helps.

Unlikely. All flash drives on the market today are sold pre-partitioned and formatted in FAT32 (universal for all OSes). Exactly what kind of drive is it, boy? Also, even though it SAYS it's installed, you might want to check the Disk Management Console (diskmgmt.msc) to see if it's really there.

Doubt it. In any case, the first thing you should do is disable restarting for severe system crashes. That way you can at the very least see WHAT caused the problem.
My D key fell off. How can I reattach it? BTW, I have a laptop.
that's going to be a pain in the ass to fix yourself. take it to bestbuy and they might fix it for free.

Sandisk micro cruizer. 8 Gig.
but NVM. found the problem. it doesnt open like most do. it opens from another icon... also, its U3 capabilities were disabled.
Might as well throw this in...
What could be the cause for my Down, Right, and Pg Dn keys on my laptop keyboard to die suddenly?
Is there any way to fix it besides sending to tech support?
Do you actually feel them clicking down when you press them? If you don't, there might be something stuck below them -- try turning the laptop around and shaking it a bit. If not, maybe the actual buttons below the keys are worn off -- only solution to that would be to turn the machine in to tech support.
I do feel them clicking when I press them.
I'll try shaking then, when I'm not using my lappie.
Well just to let people know, I woke up one afternoon (I don't do mornings.) and opened up my computer...looked at, touched a few things, shrugged, put the case back together, then turned it on and since then my computer hasn't rebooted suddenly...so far so good, hopefully, I actually did something helpful...but knowing my luck, I'll nudge my desk again and it'll go BOOP! Reboot time...
Anyways.

I can build them for you. Just let me know on the IRC at what you're looking for and I'll set a price. No PDAs from me.
Laptops usually start at $650, desktops at $310. As for the payments, usually it's 30-50% prior building it, 50-70% upon receiving your UPS tracking email. Usually I charge an extra $150-250 for my services and shipping. Laptops will be charged more as it takes a lot of my time to solder materials together (and some have monitors that are a pain in the rear to install).
Other than that, you can always give it a shot on pricewatch.com and newegg.com. I'd never recommend DeLL, HP, Compaq or Gateway. Toshiba's reasonable but still rather overpriced. Alienware = DeLL btw. Affordable and compatible modern computers could be found from ASUS and SAGER. MSI's alright but their customer service blows 50% of the time. People who wants a reliable workstation, boxxtech.com would be the way to go but very costly.
help. I have a sansa express 1 gig Mp3 player, one of those usb plug in ones. but, all of a subbed, when I plug it into the computer, while the battery should recharge, it doesnt. the display on the mp3 player while its plugged in, says "charging" and then, "charged", but when I check its properties, the battery shows as 0% charged. not a drop of juice.
why? I tried Sansa's site, but they dont even recognize this model of mp3 player...
My D key was fixed, with super glue. Almost as if it never fell off now.

Left Left Left, Right Right Right, Up Up Up, then restart when you hear the ring chime.
Guys, I have this weird problem.
Just today, Firefox's history library was cleared and the sidebar history couldn't be modified. After shutting down my computer, ALL OF IT just vanished and it now can no longer save history. Did I do something wrong or do I have to reinstall this browser?
If it truly is as you say, your profile might be corrupted. You'll have to create a new profile, and restore your bookmarks from the old one.
1. Go to the Run prompt in your Start Menu, and type firefox -profilemanager, then press Enter. This'll open up the profile manager.
2. Create a new profile, name it whatever you want, and CLOSE the browser once the profile is created. (You might want to UNcheck "Do not ask at startup" for the next few steps, or leave it unchecked permanently like me -- I'll tell you why later.)
3. Go to the Run prompt again, and type %appdata%, and press Enter. This'll take you to your Application Data folder.
4. Inside AppData, locate the Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles folder.
5. You'll see two folders there; both will have a random string at the start; one will probably end with "default" and the other with the name you just gave your new profile. Enter "default".
6. Inside "default", locate the bookmarks.html file, and copy it to the OTHER folder (the one with your new profile), replacing the new file.
7. Run firefox -profilemanager again, and pick your shiny new profile. It should have the bookmarks from your old profile, and you can restart from there.
I myself keep the profile manager always active because my main profile is somewhat clogged with quite a few things, so I always keep a light profile with only a few extensions (the Google toolbar and two or three others) for quickly checking stuff. For all my main navigation I use the main profile. Hope this helps.
I have a minor issue which worked fine in Internet Explorer, but in Mozilla Firefox I cannot seem to cut and paste any bookmark link to one of my folders on my hard drive. I am really annoyed by this because I want to keep my bookmarks as organized as possible. People have told me to install a certain bookmark add-on but I just cannot seem to find the correct one. Remember, I want the bookmarks to be able to get pasted to my hard drive, and not pasted inside the bookmark section.
Why so? If you need your bookmarks to be MOBILE, you can just look for your profile folder and copy your Bookmarks file (located in %appdata%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\[yourprofilefolder]\bookmarks.html).
I have this USB Flash Drive, and forgot to unmount it before removing it. Now, i can't see any of the files, but i know that they are still there since i have the same ammount of free space than before the accident. How can i recover my files ?
You might want to run a chkdsk -f on the drive. After that, you'll need to set Win Explorer to view both hidden and protected system files, and most of your files will be there... Except with the wrong extensions. You'll have to figure out most of the files by size. Had that happen to me once. -_-
does anyone know why my computer crashed a while ago? ;__; It was working on something, and suddenly when i clicked on a link to one of the boards on RPM, it froze up, and I couldnt do anything, I could move the mouse, but when I clicked, nothing happened... it wouldnt do anything. so I freaked out and turned the computer off from the power strip. but when I turned it back on, it wouldnt reads the hard drive and wouldnt recognize it as such.

Your disc temporarily locked up, and you shutting it down when it was locked up was the coup de grace in killing it. Sometimes XP DOES lock up when doing stuff (happens to me when I'm watching video files on MPC) but it unlocks by itself a few seconds after. Next time, leave it alone for the next couple of minutes; if by then it hasn't unlocked itself, then try shutting it down, but only leave that as a very last resort. And don't unplug/turn off the power strip, you blithering idiot, you could have overloaded any of the other components in the machine. Press and hold the power button for a few seconds, and the machine will automatically turn off by itself.

Wrong. ANY installation of XP works on ANY laptop (proof: myself), you just need to find the drivers for the devices in the laptop by yourself. And no, it doesn't work that way. When you buy a laptop, you can tell the OEM (the people who sell you the machine) you'd like a downgrade; you'll have to pay a bit extra for it, but they'll remove Vista and install XP (usually either Home or Media Center). And there IS official support for XP still, just not to the same extent as there was about three or four years ago.
I DID try the power button, I held it for the longest time and still nothing, not even CTR + ALT + Delete worked. but that computer was a found computer anyway. my dad works in the city, in the rockefeller center are, and the big companies throw out their old PC's often. he brings em home and they worked just fine (once you put a new HD in...) so it was a found computer, with a new monitor, and a used, yrt still new HD. an 80 gig HD given to me by my neighbor... he works in verizon, and he said he had an HD that he used for something but didnt need anymore. that was it.
In any case, regarding your XP question, ANY XP will work on ANY laptop. You just need to look for the hardware drivers of each integrated device yourself. Usually, if it's an original laptop, you can search for the drivers at the manufacturer's website. Take me, for example: my Aspire 5670 came with a 120GB HDD, which I had to replace. Since I had no way of getting the original stuff for the hardware, I just installed a pirated version of XP Pro SP2 I had laying around, and as soon as I did, I used Microsoft's app to change the serial number to the legit one that came with the machine, and just headed to Acer's website to get the drivers for all the stuff that came on the laptop (video card drivers, webcam drivers, sound drivers, multicard reader drivers, infrared drivers, bluetooth drivers, et al).
My only XP question was how to obtain XP for a laptop when I buy it, since I dont like nor want Vista...
You buy it just about anywhere. Any store outlets should still have some original XP licenses to sell, either Pro or Media Center. Or you can hop by Amazon or NewEgg and try over there.
I can't seem to get the mic working on my PC, can someone help solve this? (it has a transformers case, imo)
OK, DZ you mentioned in another thread that there was a 64bit Edition of XP Media Center Edition and I went searching for it and didn't find much. What I'm wondering is whether or not this is a Microsoft only retail item, or if I'm just not searching for it right.
Also, in your opinion, what are the benefits to having Vista Ultimate over XP Media Center Edition if any?
Ok so I want to have a collection of Sharingan avatars but I can't get the damn rotate script to work, so could someone who's using it please write a guide with screenshots?

Im worried.
1. I have a USB gamepad. It works good (using XP's default driver), but after an hour or so, it stops working, and disappears from the list of connected devices. It will work again after unplugging it, rebooting PC (sometimes it's not necessary, though), and plugging it again. Is there anything I can do to play for more than hour?
2. Can anybody recommend me a good RSS Reader? I want something that will minimize to system tray, clear it's cache every few days, and the most important thing: will eat as little RAM as possible. I don't need any bling-bling features, just something simple and small.
With it connected, try heading to the Device Manager applet and uninstalling the gamepad, then unplug and plug again so it gets installed again, and see if the problem gets solved that way. If not, you'll have to search for specific replacement drivers.
As for the RSS question, I wouldn't know, I use a RSS ticker on my Firefox. :P
*takes notes* I'll try that. I hope it'll work T_T

Update (sort of): After 3 hours my pad disappeared, and replugging it didn't help ("unknown device").
After further research (I don't really want to buy another pad >.>) I found that it seems to be a XP bugs + motherboard (DFI AK75-EC; VIA KT133A chipset) bugs combo, and it's quite a common problem. Some say that messing with motherboard and chipset driver can help, I'll try that tomorrow.
There's also that KB822603 update for Windows, but it doesn't want to work on SP2 :C

Hey, yknow what Happened to me one time... I was deleting stuff from my Recycle bin, and since there was so much chit there, when I clicked to delete everything, it froze up a bit. so Me, in all my impatientness, clicked it like crazy, saying DAMMNIT WORK!
and suddenly it unfroze, and I heard the sound of a whole bunch of clicks, and everything was deleted, but then a message popped up like the ones which ask you if your sure you want to delete blah blah, but this is what it said.
-are you sure you want to delete "windows"?-
and I shat bricks for a second, and clamly clicked "no" I mean, normally when you empty the bin, the "clear out bin" button fades out to grey.
I was freaked out by it for a bit. was like, hoshit, I opened a wormhole. 8D.
Maybe I'm just going insane, but is it possible that a graphic card can be TOO good for a video and thus make the graphical output of a video look worse? I've been watching a few videos and fansubs on my new notebook and the videos look a lot worse than on my usual home computer despite the notebook having far more horsepower and a more powerful graphic card. Especially when it comes to darker colors, the images tend to bug up, creating moving squares and stuff. I checked my graphic card driver and it's up to date and also tested some other players (though Media Player Classic works just fine on my old computer), but no changes so far. It's pissing me off. The only other thing I could think of is that I missed to install some codec or whatever to make it look good again, but last I checked, CCCP was just about anything you needed for good video quality. Any suggestions on what the hell is wrong? I'll also provide a screenshot in order to show what I'm talking about.
[spoiler](http://img206.imageshack.us/img206/7357/snapshot20081228023802bjs0.jpg)[/spoiler]
See all this squared stuff on the monitor/window and in the right corner? This crap didn't show up on my regular computer.
It's probably due to how your video configuration is set, and how your codecs are handling the video. Make sure your color quality is set to 32bits and that your codecs are all up to date and assigned correctly.
Well, in that case I have no idea what's wrong. Color is set to 32bits, the options in Media Player Classic are both the same, as are the settings in CCCP. I don't know how or where to change stuff in order to get a clean picture again.
I might also add that even videos on YouTube, in High Quality or HD even, look worse on this notebook.

It could be just the compatability with the graphics card and the notebook. Probably the best solution is to lower or raise the brightness or contrast.
Ok, this is a trivial matter, but it's annoying the hell out of me...
You know when you save/open files, the subfolders and the files are all in alphabetic order, with the subfolders listed first then the files?
Well, just recently, the order is reserved; instead of a-z, it's now z-a, with the folders at the back instead of front.
If I access the folders directly (like Start -> My Documents), the order is maintained as it should.
It ONLY happens when I want to save stuff from the net, or I try to open them from programs like MSPaint/MicroSoft Word.
I know I can just right-click and then "Arrange by name", but it's consistent and annoying.
Oh, I tried to System Restore from a savepoint which I know is before this change, but when the system starts up, it tells me it can't restore to that savepoint...
So... Help?

I'm not quite sure if this is the proper thread but anyway, is there a way to remove my post count based title and have it only display my custom title?
Nope.
With a bit of heavy-duty editing on the forum code, it's possible. But it will affect everyone...
Then again, that might make the forum code vulnerable to attacks.

Which is precisely why I said it's not possible. Not only that, but it could also make the forum software vulnerable to just about anything if we make a mistake, as Wily said.
Who cares about titles anyway? Just pretend it's not there, it's not like anyone's going to care.
what about putting me and anyone else who wants it in to a user group that doesn't have a title?
That's a bit unfair for everyone else...

because 1, its too much work to modify the code, to do that, there would have to be a new user group based off of the members, for only like, 3 or 4 people, which is a waste of code, since you can just ignore it anyway,
because 2 post count titles = E [ray splasher] and lets us tell whos newer than others,
because 3, does it bother you THAT much to be a C class hunter?

sometimes Animated Gifs run at like, twice the speed in my Firefox. would you happen to know whay that is?
Firefox runs animated GIF images at the CORRECT speed. If other software animates them at slower speeds, the problem is with the other software, not with Fx itself.
thats weird. With IE or any other, they run at their "normal" speed, while with FX they sometimes run overly fast. for the life of me, I cant figure this out.
I doubt that a Zero running gif is intended to run like hes racing Sonic the hedgehog.
I have a simple question.
If I have a slave hard drive for storage, would moving the stuff from the primary to the slave increase my computer's memory and speed? :\
No. Memory size, memory speed, memory bandwidth, processor bandwidth and processor speed have absolutely nothing to do with files being stored in one drive or another.

Does anyone here no how to resolve an ip conflict, I cannot to the network without there being a conflict between the IP Addresses of my computer and other computers especially with the the router going screwy.
If you have an IP conflict that's because your router doesn't automatically assign them, which means each computer has had its set manually and two or more have the same internal IP. In XP:
- Go to Network Connections
- Right click on the connection > Properties

In the "IP Address:" field make sure all your computers have a number like 192.168.1.XXX, XXX being different for each computer and a number between 1 and 255

Paint should take some features from Oekaki.
Actually... a Layer function would be enough. Man that would rock.
MSPaint has too many tools as is. I mean seriously, who uses the shape tools? I just make my circles and squares using the line and pencil tools. The spray can is useless, real men make their own randomized pixel clouds with the pencil tool. Text? I make my own.
All I really need is the pencil tool.
well, i use the circle tool. that i do, adn i usually use the paintbrush and line tool. I dont like the pencil tool for some odd reason.
I dont use the box tool, that polygon tool, or the spraypaint tool.
though a layer option wouild be great.
A bigger pallete would be cool.

what, 28 different colours of your choosing isn't enough?
I rarely use over 8.
For some reason, every time I want to save in Microsoft Word 2007, the program crashes. Help?
The first suggestion that comes to mind? Reinstall the program. Or uninstall it and get Open Office. Seems like a bug in the software to me.

In the oekaki board there's an red x on the top left that means there's something wrong with the applet. I installed the latest version of Java but it doesn't work. Can anyone help? '>.>
^Did someone answer my question yet?
Make sure Java's enabled; if it is, clear your cache and try doing a forced refresh (Ctrl+F5).
If this doesn't solve it, no idea. I've never really dealt with the Oekaki board before.
EDIT: problem seems to be solved now.
My problem still not solved... but oh well... >.>
Okay, I have a weird problem that just is flat out pissing me off.
I come home, and install windows XP service pack 3 (since windows kept harping me to do a system update.)
Upon installing it, my drivers don't work, and I get 10 error messages talking about programs not working.
To make matters worse, when I try to system restore, my computer will go through and restart, but say the restore didn't work due to a system shut down.
I have not downloaded anything for the past 3 days, I've restarted by computer multiple times before I left home, no problems. When SP3 hits, BOOM! My computers screwed. Is there anyway I can fix this without doing another hard drive wipe? Also, when I click the turn off computer option, nothing happens. just a side bit of info. :/
thanks for the help, pyromonki.
Service Pack 3 is a HUGE improvement in the inner workings of XP. If your software doesn't work, it's more than probably outdated, so get yourself moving and update your drivers for EVERY single device in your computer, and get up-to-date versions of any software you've been using. I've been using SP3 for about a year now and if anything, it's made my day-to-day maintenance work and general performance a definite boost.
Also, run a decent antivirus software (Avira's good, www.free-av.com) and make sure its virus database is fully updated. You might have your machine chock full of crap and be unfairly judging SP3 as being responsible for it.
I've got a fun one for you tech savvy peoples.
My dad's PC (An HP Pavillion Windows 98, purchased Dec. 98) has been running slow as hell lately, even more so than usual. So I decide to re-format the disk. Windows 98 was successfully put back on, and eventually I got my router working.
So, I naturally want to get on to the interwebz and get Firefox right away...
But It says that
"an error has occured in the script on this page"
With line info, character info, reason (some hilarious ones like "expected j") and a code, which is usually 0. So I have to sit and hold the enter button for every page I visit; is there a way around this? I'm guessing that this is because I don't have anywhere near a usuable IE. Also, I can't seem to get to a Firefox that works for Windows (due to the script stuff; IE keeps crashing.)
Secondly, is there any way I can get the 98 updates any more? The link on my desktop takes me to a broken link. Google only yields 98 SE stuff, and that's not my OS.
Thanks in advance, guys
Buy a new computer.
Ditch 98, dude. If anything, get yourself a copy of Win2k. It runs on almost the exact same requirements as 98 and is MUCH more stable and reliable.
Ok, not exactly a problem, but figured it should go here anyways.
What's a good program to record my PC and stream it in places like JTV? Or at least a good free recording program.
For streaming on any site (Justin.tv, Mogulus, ustream, etc):
Quote
1. Download and install Flash Media Live Encoder (FMLE) from:
http://www.adobe.com/products/flashmediaserver/flashmediaencoder
2. Download your config file and save it to your desktop:
* FMLE 2.5: http://www.justin.tv//fme_config.xml
* FMLE 3.0: http://www.justin.tv//fme3_config.xml
3. Open Flash Media Live Encoder, and under the File menu, choose 'Open Profile' and select the xml file you just downloaded. Choose a camera and microphone from their respective drop-down boxes.
4. Press the green 'Start' button to begin broadcasting. Once the software has connected, you can load your Justin.tv channel page (e.g. http://justin.tv/justin) to check if you are broadcasting.
I personally recommend FME 2.5, so download the first xml file.
You MUST be logged in before you download the xml file, so that you load your correct settings for justin.tv and later be able to broadcast.
To record AVI Video files (upload to youtube, nico video, veoh, dailymotion, etc):
I use VirtualDubMod (http://www.free-codecs.com/download/VirtualDubmod.htm). I run it, then I go to File > Capture AVI, and everything should be available for you there. Your recording device should be connected by now, and will be detected by VDM. On the bottom corner of the Capture Mode for VirtualDubMod, set the sound to 44K/16/s, and the framerate should be about 29,97 fps, 30 fps, or whatever it is your device can support. If it can handle 60 fps, then why not try it out?
Now click on Capture > Settings, make sure that only the Escape key is turned on for Abort Hotkeys. No other key or actions will interrupt with your recording when you have this settings, so you can freely walk around the internet while still recording (as long as you don't turn off VirtualDubMod). Now press OK, and head to Capture > Preferences, click on the checkboxes for "Save current capture/video/audio settings/format as default" (all 3 of them) and click OK. Your exact settings has been saved now for next time you start VirtualDubMod.
When you record with VirtualDubMod, and you find out that sound doesn't get recorded properly, make sure you have Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/) running in the background too. On Audacity, click Edit > Preferences. Recording device should be the one you're using for video recording. Turning on Software Playthrough is up to you, but it will play the sound on the PC if you turn it off, so it might be a good idea to make sure sound is recorded to the AVI file while you record with VirtualDubMod. The codecs you can use for VirtualDubMod is "Uncompressed RGB" or "X-Vid MPEG-4 Codec" (set X-Vid to the bitrate you want). I hope that helped.
Lastly, to record your screen, my personal favorite (as proven on the Rockman 8 Sega Saturn video on RPM Front Page Theme Week), is Camtasia Recorder that's included with Camtasia Studio. The version I use is 4.0, but there's newer ones way up to 6 now. Anyway, it's not a free tool, but you can "find" it somewhere, especially one version where the key/serial is already saved inside the installation.
Moving on, open Camtasia Recorder, go to Tools > Options. On Capture tab, select Save as AVI, and click the File Name Options button. Choose Automatic File Name and the output folder should be somewhere you can reach your AVI files. I use Desktop. I also turned off "Show toolbar underneath capture rectangle during recording" but that's up to you.
Go to Audio tab, and set the audio codec you want. If you have "MPEG Layer 3 (LAME)" available, then that will save you some time, so you don't have to use WAV>MP3 compression. Choose the bitrate you want too, and preferably 44100Hz 16 bit Stereo sound (either LAME or PCM codec doesn't matter). Accept all those audio settings and go to Hotkeys tab. Select the hotkeys you want for recording and stopping. I change recording from F9 to F8, because F9 interferes when I record PSP games with remotejoylite. Go to the Program tab and turn off everything there.
Now the important part, the video quality. Click the Video tab, choose Manual video configuration, screen capture framerate should be 60 or 30 fps (depends on which you prefer. I stick with 60 fps though). Click Video Compression button, and click Configure for Tech Smith Screen Capture Codec. Drag the bar all the way to the left (Faster Compression) and click OK. This will record your videos in (pixel-perfect?) PNG quality. Double-check that the frame rate stays at 60 fps and then press OK.
Now on the main window, you can press Capture > Wizard to make your last screen-capture settings. Select the region, window or anything you want to record, then press Next a couple of times, and don't forget to turn on "Record Audio" and "Speaker Audio (what you hear)" along the way. Now you can record whenever you want to, by pressing F8 and stop with F10.
To live-stream your screen-captures (an emulator or something), I use WebCamMax. It takes a lot more things to setup with it, but when you have made your settings (and some frame rate settings in the Options/Preferences/whatever too), you can now use WebCamMax with Flash Media Encoder, as a Video Codec. The Audio Codec for FME should be the one you use, anything that isn't the Microphone.
I'm sure there are other screen-capture tools out there, but if you have a very dependable PC, these are all you need and does the job just fine. ^^
I recently pruchased a video card for my PC so that I can finally play games, my Pc is Asus Dual Core 2.5 Ghz of core memory with Windows Xp. I purchased an Asus EAH3450 HDMI Video Card with PCI connectors. So I plug the card, plug the wires, install all the drivers then SUDDENLY! MY screen just....shut down, there's no image on my screen anymore, so I reboot and after I try to run a MMO I downloaded, Windows advise me through a blue screen I haven't seen in years that it had to shut down Windows because my Video card corrupt some of my FAt32 operations, the reason is that my videocard is blocked by an infinite loop probably due to the drivers not having been installed proprerly, I have noticed some troubles while installing the drivers, like some drivers trying 3 or 4 times to install before they finally suceed and my screen resolution being out of the ordinary, meaning that even with adjustments, everything is out of proportion and the colors are slightly [tornado fang]'d up. So I simply unplugged the card, put it back into it's box with all the drivers and the receipt and am about to go back to the shop I bought it from for a refund. but since I am planning to try to buy another one, becaus eI really need one, I'd like to know what the problem is, if someone could tell me, because I don't want ending up buying 10 different videocards before finding one that fits my computer and I especially don'T want to send my PC there so that they can charge me an awesome ammount of cash for a computer check up I probably don't even need, I physically checked for any corruption and problems that may have been caused by the card, everything is fine, I simply located a few infected files that I have put into quarrantine for now. so anyways, if someone can help me, please tell me.
1. Virus quarantines are nothing but a myth. If something's infected, DELETE it, period.
2. You need to UNINSTALL the drivers from the previous card (i.e. the built-in video card) before installing those of the add-on card.
3. The computer specification you give us tells us NOTHING. Asus is merely a board manufacturer, and does not make processor units; Intel and AMD do, and being a 2.5GHz Dual Core refers to your processor capabilities. You need to tell us the exact make and model of the computer, or we won't be able to help you.
The computer didn't have a video card to begin with, si no drivers were installed before.
However, if you would be able to help me on how to check my computer's Specs it would be kind.
Was it pre-built manufacturer machine (Dell, Lenovo, HP, Compaq, etc.) or did you/your peers build it? Without that information, I can't do anything. If it was a pre-built, I need the actual machine name and model, which you should know, because these things are NOT usually in plain view on desktop machines (only on laptops).
I didn't notice the Model's Sticker on the front before, well now I did, it's an Intel Core 2 Duo.
Limewire isn't recognizing my java runtime environment, keeps telling me to update it which I've done like 10 times now. It worked fine before my computer crashed. Help.

...
Intel Core 2 Duo is the PROCESSOR model, not the COMPUTER model. A COMPUTER model would be, among the Dell desktops, the Optiplex line of models (Optiplex 260, Optiplex 280, Optiplex 620), or, among their laptops, the Inspiron line of models (of which I'm too lazy to look up numbers). If you don't get me THAT, I (nor anyone else here) cannot help you.
I'm sorry if you're really trying to help us help you, but it feels almost like you're making it more difficult on purpose.
Well I'm seriously sorry but I have absolutely no idea what the CPU model is, I'm trying to find my recieve to look it up, but I doubt it's there either. I worked in a computer shop for a while, but much more like an assistant than an actual technician so my knowledge is very very limited, so yeah sorry if I seem to do it on purpose, I'm going to come back with my problem once I find my Computer model.
But just by curiosity, do you think I can look it up by checking in the BIOS?
yeah that should work. if you have a camera, get a picture of the main screen.
Did you check your PSU (Power Supply Unit) can handle the video card? A 3450 doesn't sound like a powerhog, but you might have some really bad one.
Okay I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this but this thing called Spy Protect 2009 is is showing up, and I don't know how it got there and because it's there I can't go to You Tube so I'm wondering if Spy Protect 2009 is a legitiment virus protection software or is it just a fake?

You should use AVG (http://free.avg.com/) instead. That or nothing. o.o

Okay but let me ask my brother the next time he comes home to see what he recommends.
Do you think you could have installed it when installing another program, sometimes, drivers comes with other optional crap like anti-spywares or half assed Virus-scanners. You could have installed it without really knowing.
But if it's the case, it's probably a very bad anti spyware, so just uninstal it and take another Anti-Virus, like Vixy said, AVG is very good, Avast is also another good choice.
That Spy Protect 2009 thing is a malicious program, Sakura, probably delivered through a trojan horse somehow, and I would strongly recommend you get rid of it ASAP.
Removal instrucitons here:

Yeah I just did it showed up like an hour or half a hour ago I kept on trying to get rid of it but nothing worked but then I tried Ctrl-Alt-Delete and finally got rid of it but I hope I wasn't too late and I still can't go to Youtube.
Check that link in my post, or this one http://www.spywarevoid.com/spyware-protect-2009.html
Both will tell you how to remove it for good. The second link is more thorough.
Alternately, you could download some real anti-spyware programs and let them take care of it (you'll find some at this link): http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20081228121147AA0EvY0
Okay what do I click on first in the second link?
EDIT:Okay I found a download button on the site and then it gave me something called spyware docter do I proceed?
If you're doing it yourself, scroll down to "How to manually remove Spyware Protect 2009" and follow the instructions (block listed websites, kill listed processes, delete listed files and folders).
If you don't want to do it the hard way, that Yahoo link is the way to go:
QuoteDownload, install, update and scan your computer with both Malwarebytes and SuperantiSpyware, delete what ever they find, if this fails to completely remove the virus/spyware download then update Avast and run a boot scan (click schedule boot-time scan and restart your PC), all the software below is free and safe to use.
Malwarebytes: http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php
SuperantiSpyware: http://www.superantispyware.com/
Avast Anti-Virus: http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
Edit: Use that Spyware Doctor thing you downloaded if you wish; I believe it's legitimate software, but I don't know much about it.
Yeah I remember my mom had it on my laptop.

So THAT's why I can never find the any key... XD
For those that recommended AVG, let me tell you guys that I'd have done the same a version ago. Unfortunately, the latest version of AVG is so full of holes it's not even funny. (Three stupid viruses I wrote MYSELF went right past AVG's scanner, and I don't do that for a living.) Instead, get yourself Avira Antivir, which is basically the best damn AV software I've been able to find lately. www.free-av.com
As for antispyware, yeah, Spyware Doctor is a legit software, and as far as I'm told, a rather good one. Go with it.
I only use AVG for placebo purposes

I dunno why you use Limewire, dear -- I recommend Soul Seek. Much better, much simpler, much lighter, and much more quality results. In any case, here goes some help.
Uninstall both things, then install the very latest version of the JRE, and THEN install Limewire. If that doesn't work, uninstall both and try to install Limewire again; it should fire up an automatic install of the JRE which, since it's being installed FROM Limewire, SHOULD work.

Does anyone know how to fix a I/O device error? I cannot access one of my portable drives for some reason. -u-'
What interface does it use? USB, Firewire? HP Media Dock(USB in disguise)?
I was gonna post a problem I'm having, but then I realized "I'm Rad, this [parasitic bomb] happens to me for a reason, if the only problem I have is fixed, what will I live for?"

Aye, I already made sure everything was up to date, it happened when I tried to manually install ALSA sound drivers, it removed old stuff, and tried to install new stuff, but failed, which didn't revert to old stuff.
But after hours of tweaking I got sound out of things like YouTube videos.
But I still can't get sound out of Amarok, Rhythmbox, or any other media player. *In fact, Amarok just tells me that there's an error with the audio card and it's reverting to PulseAudio, which I already know doesn't work.*
I gave up on it, I'll go fiddle with it more when I feel like getting frustrated.
Right now, I feel like listening to music.
You need to have a fall-back that has XP, like a netbook or something.
I'm logged into BlackXP right now.
so listen to your porn soundtracks music while you fix the sound card issue.
I can't fix it while logged into BlackXP, I have to be on Fedora to fix it.
Since it's not the hardware, it's the software not working properly.
I knew the problem was with linux, but I assumed that you had more than one computer.

Get the full version.
And if you've got the trial on your computer already, you'll need to clean a lot of registry values before installing the full version.
Rockmon : Ah no, I'm poor as [tornado fang], so only one computer, multiple partitions (That being 2.)
Another way to record the screen is to use windows media encoder. You'll have to get Vixy's help with the settings though.

I'm actually trying to find a good recorder for TF2 gameplay. I don't like the Source Recorder.
I use a full version of FRAPs (Which eats up resources like Pac-man eats dots)
And Camtasia Studio for putting it all together and making the file size reasonable.
I'm that guy that goes around recommending CamStudio, because it's the only one I managed to make it work somehow, but if the video is many minutes long it'll probably crash.

Alrighty, lets take a crack at this one.
Something's been up with Firefox lately, other than it's been one resource hungry mother. When I launch the program, after about... I guess five minutes, the loading light on my computer turns on, but the PC makes a rhythmic "krrk... krrkrrk" sound for about a minute, which then hangs the whole computer until it stops. This then happens after every 30 minutes. I've ruled out viruses and malware since I ran thorough scans with Avira, Spybot and Adaware with no returns. Furthermore, IE(7) is not affected by this so it's clearly something with Firefox. My own research says something may be up with the profile firefox uses, like it's corrupting or something, though I'm not sure here. Any thoughts?
Avira made my computer act funny during startup. I dont like it anymore. >:(
and when I used system restore, Avira was gone. which means it was the cause.
I get a blue screen error every now and then, and sometimes my computer lags horribly.
is it by any chance the "0x0000008E" bluescreen ?
yep.
if you google it, you should get the solution.
(well, google 0x0000008E)

I'm sorry if it sounds like I'm berating you, but it's good to know that you're aware that you were the one screwing up. Installing drivers is easily the most delicate thing when handling new hardware installs, because a single screw-up with the driver installation could completely [tornado fang] your system up in terms of data loss, which is rather more expensive than one or two pieces of hardware exploding.

In the Run prompt, type
firefox -profilemanager and hit Enter. Create a new profile, and try browsing for a while with a clean slate. If no problems arise, your profile is indeed screwed. Hit me back for ways to recover your bookmarks and suchlike to import them into your new profile.

Looks like it is indeed something with the profile. An hour later and it has yet to lockup the system.
In that case, you might wanna try investigating more deeply.
1. Run firefox -safe-mode, and open with the screwed profile.
2. In the dialog box, pick to Disable ALL add-on components.
3. Run the screwed profile, and enable the add-ons backwards in time one by one, i.e. enable the oldest one, try the browser.
4. If no crash happens, enable the next oldest one, restart and try the browser again.
5. Repeat step 4 ad-infinitum until the last add-on you enable crashes the system.
You can either do that, or simply load the screwed profile in Safe Mode, export your bookmarks, and import them on the new profile. I'd go with the longer solution, since it ensures your sessions and history remain safe. It's a bit more tedious, but it's worth it.

I usually animate my things on Flash or Animation Shop anyways.
Well last night i was looking at one of the threads on this board about someone linking to a site about a rare megaman 1 cart with 5 screws right? ..
Well after i looked a bit, i closed the window. And i dont think i was quite paying attention, but i was midnlessly clicking stuff here on the board, and some IE window popped up saying megastuff.webs.com ..i immediately closed it before the page could load.
My heart starting pounding for a minute or 2, so then i decided to just run some anti-malware and virus checks all last night just in case.
It took 5 and a half hours for the AntiMalware Bytes program to scan nothing found, good. i went asleep. After it was done at 4 AM i woke up and then started a AVG scan and stayed awake this morning while it went. At aroudn 7:30 AM this morning, it was still going after 2 hours 40 minutes...then suddenly my hard drive started having a heart attack or something making heartbeat noises.
It would sound like in the form of a heartbeat of 2 pulses per second or two. :( So i immedately shut off my comp and kept it off for about 2 minutes, turned it back on..been okay since then.
This is the 2nd time now i believe this has happened, and it really had my heart pounding hard. The last time it happened was EXACTLY the same result...while scanning with AVG, after a few hours and it wasn't done...the hard drive started making those heartbeat noises.
It's about to die soon isn't it ?? :(
Sounds like your HDD is dying due to a mechanical failure. Get a new HDD ASAP and start backing [parasitic bomb] up.
Just updating on my issue, since it's now over and done with.
The new profile thing helped, but it brought up a whole slew of issues, like it'd do the freezing thing on Firefox's boot up or while going to look at my saved passwords. Boo. Anyway, I got the new Firefox update and ran it. The program froze on restart and screwed up Firefox permanently. So, it's time for the age-old solution: Uninstall without removing setting and clean install it. Problems all went away.
It still makes me wonder what was causing it. Bit rot maybe? This was a Firefox I ported over from my computer about five years ago and have updated constantly since.
That's very strange, actually. I see no reason why it should've crashed on you merely because it was an old installation you've been upgrading over the years. But as long as the problem's solved, it's all good I guess.
We have 2 desktops and 5 laptops that don't work. Who wants to help?
Holy [parasitic bomb], that sounds like a challenge. :D
Start firin'. XD
Well, considering they either A) Can't be powered B) Won't turn on and C) Aren't with me because I'm at the library and don't have a way to get on the net at home, its gonna be kinda hard. I know alot of it is just general terrible hardware. As a matter of fact, 4 of them are Compaq Presarios. I think one has a fried mother board, two of them won't power on at all, and one is just a formatted mess with no working CD drive.
well you could always transplant optical drives providing all the other [parasitic bomb] works.
Hell, if the two desktops aren't fried, you can always transplant some of the components from one to the other to make a working one.
I dont know why, but im having trouble seeing avatars on RPM. they just dont show up sometimes. that includes my own.
any help?
No worries, you're not alone. Heck, I've been reuploading it for 3-4 times...
And now, I'm using a photobucket link as my avatar, not the usual file attachment.
huh, so the issue is something with RPM itself?

I have the same problem too. Well, lets use borockman's method thrn.
Since the avatars aren't really being stored in the actual database, but uploaded to the server (and then the database stores the URL to them), it might just be that the database is simply timing out in requesting the images. Nothing to worry about, really.
just annoying is all.
I´ve got one: For some reason I can´t upload bigger images or zip files to the internet...but downloading is working just fine
Nvmd. it was "K-Lite" or some such rot.

DVD>whatever or the other way? Videora for converting from DVD
I'm trying to capture, compress, record with the best possible quality for the video in mind, so I'm looking for the best video codecs available for free on the internet. Which ones do you recommend?

anyway, I dont know where to pu this so ill put it here. Why cant I see the first page of my Art topic? the background loads, and thats it. According to the browser, the page finished loading... though all I see is a background.

Some help on the matter would be appreciated. I can't view my first page...
Same here. But from the looks of things, it's trying to load a -ton- of images. Were people using [img] tags? I'll never understand why people can't just link to stuff.
I cant be sure, because since the crash, I copied most of my posts directly from MMN, where IMG tags are not allowed in art threads. so some have images some dont.
Posted on: May 20, 2009, 10:08:43 PM
EDIT: I looked for a snapshot of the page, a cached view, or whatever, and heres about 15 images on the page, not counting sigs... the most I have on any of the other pages are 9 images with IMG tags... I never had a problem with it before though...
The problem isn't on your end, guys -- it's with the forum software. Apparently there was some kind of injection with a spambot on either one of the software files or the DB itself, and the ENTIRE PAGE ended up being, literally, CSS invisible. I'll poke around inside the DB now and see what I can find.
wow, that doesnt sound good...
yeah, Id appreciate it. :P
Randomly poking in the DB initially didn't bring up anything. I'm downloading the forum files to pore over those next. If that STILL doesn't bring up anything, I'll be downloading a complete DB dump and analyzing that closely next.
Posted on: 2009/05/21, 10:51:56
Reading through the forum files that relate to displaying threads gave no results. And having reported this to the SMF support forum, I'm inclined to think the issue is with the files, not the database. I'm gonna have to talk to Vix so she can request SSH access from Bluehost so I can deal with this properly and find the culprit.
Yikes... that sounds quite serious. :/
Wow, i must live on an indian burial ground or something. My moms computer won't work anymore. Screen doesn't turn on, it doesn't start to boot, nothing.
could it be the power cord? or the device in the PC that controls the power? actually, that reminds me. a wile ago, My dad's screen stopped working.
when I push the button to turn it on, instead of the light going to yellow(standby) first then to green (on) when it turns on, it just goes directly to green, and the screen itself is still off. any help? I gave him my screen, (since I didnt need it)
Not been able to check.
On my desktop, I finally got my dongle to work until i attempted to move from 98 to 98se. After an error and reformat, I repeated the same steps to get the dongle working, however it appears for the briefest of moments then disappears from my taskbar.
Is a sorcerer gonna take care of the SSH thingy now? It's been activated a few days ago. o.o
On it as I type.
speaking of which, were you able to find out anything on that Injection in my thread?
Since I'm such an epic detective, I managed to track down where were all the files that were injecting spam code into our forum pages (yes, ALL OF THEM), one of which was getting injected so badly it ended up making your art thread's first page invisible, and got rid of them with a single attack from my command-fu.
You may all worship me now.

Computer won't delete the first document that I have accedentally printed; yet I made the mistake of turning the printer off during it's job, paused the doc, and now I can't delete the doc that I didin't want to print. can someone help?
EDIT w/ PROTIP: If you are using a printer from a remote source, be sure to reset the main computer that has the printer hooked up to it to correct the problem. I figured this one out, though at least if it happens again, I could keep this question open.
What is the best antivirus to use for protection? And what is the difference between Divx and Xvid?
Avira Antivir for your first question. And for your second question, XviD is generally a better codec, supporting less noticeable compression in smaller filesize.
Hey why is it that animated Gifs run a lot faster in firefox than they do normally?
On my PC itself, like windows picture and fax viewer, and in IE, they run at normal speed, but on firefox, they run too fast. why is that?
IDK, but at least I now know that I'm not the only one with the problem.

It's the other way around. The animation display engine of most OSes is actually too slow. Firefox displays animated GIFs at their correct speed. I think Chrome does as well.
Haven't we already had this discussion?
I dont recall it.

I've always used Firefox for testing my animated gifs. Always.
Proof is that some of them, like the Power Quest, Star Tropics and Protoman gifs in my topic would be too slow on the other browsers.

Going back to my previous question, does anyone know of actual free antiviurs that will allow me to get rid of malware like "Antivirus XP Pro"? Get both Avira Antivir and Spybot: Search and Destroy, and run them both in Safe Mode.
Your fault for downloading [parasitic bomb] without knowing what it is and browsing using Internet Explorer, and letting EVERYONE in the house use the computer as Administrators. Under the proper security conditions, that piece of shitware wouldn't even be able to get near your system, and unfortunately for you, it falls within the responsibility limits of the users to make sure their security is up to scratch.
For a few weeks now I have been experiencing some trouble when it comes to playing video files (.flv) which I ripped from YouTube and the likes using FlashGot. Ever since a certain point several days ago, none of my players is capable of initiating playback anymore when I try to run the video. At first I thought it was a problem with FlashGot itself, if it might not be able to rip properly anymore. But I tested both the latest version and some older versions of it and the problem remains. All files of that format I downloaded prior to that moment still work however.
what player are you using?
So, my computer when I came back to it was on a black screen with the words "Operating System Not Found", which is bullshit because here I am. Its also been freezing every few hours while it makes a sound that sounds like its looking for a floppy disk, except I have none in the drive.
My hard drive is about to fail, isn't it?

Media Player Classic. However, once those problems started I tested some other players (WMP, Zoom) but nothing changed. And as I said, .flv files I downloaded before these problems began still work.

If you have one or have a friend who can lend you one, it's preferable you get an external drive big enough to hold up all your important data and back that up NOW. According to your description, the drive's VERY close to physical failure.

Not that I would be aware of it. As a matter of fact, the ONLY codec pack I ever installed on this notebook (at least to my knowledge) was the CCCP on the very evening I got this laptop (Christmas Eve last year). I wouldn't know of anything else that I could have installed. And like I said, stuff that I previously downloaded from YouTube and other Flash related sites are still working perfectly, it's just the stuff that I want to download now that does not work. I completely removed the FlashGot plugin I have for Firefox and then reinstalled an older version of it to see if perhaps the malfunctioning might have been caused by an update or anything, but the situation remains the same.

Oh my [tornado fang]ing god, its been for like a month already and it doesn't work. I can't see the youtube videos in this site. -AC Ok, uninstall both of them. Restarting. I downloaded the latest versions, Java: Version 6 Update 13 and Adobe Flash Player: Version 10.0.22.87. What's next?

Wait, you're using the MPC that's packed with CCCP?
I have similar problems with that specific player, so I just went and download another MPC.
The videos will work on the new MPC, ver 6.4.9.1.
Well, I did not bother with any other Media Player Classic versions because all versions I tried so far except for the one packed with CCCP gave me trouble with my Vista theme.
Hey, question. As a few of you know, I go a brand new Laptop recently. However, It has Vista. Now, Vista oitself hasnt been giving me any issues, but My printer, an Hp, will not install because it is meant for win. Xp... can I Dl drivers or something to make it work on my LT?
Um well, first you have to find out what the exact laptop or printer you have (manufacturer, model, stuff), and then go to the official website to see if XP or Vista drivers are available for it. If there aren't any drivers available, you have to use some kind of "driver detective" or something that's actually helpful (and free >v<). A driver search engine program that help you find the right drivers.
Your laptop has a couple of things installed, and you have to make research, find out what graphics card you have, sound card, everything that's important to you, and then go to the official websites for those things and download drivers all over the place. It takes a long time, but make sure you save everything on a CD or something if you need them later. >U<
Yeah. My PE teacher pretty much said the same thing... Go to the site the printer is from, and download drivers from there if they have them, alternatively, have them send me a disc with the drivers. (In the case I dont want to download it)
Thanks.
So uh, I'm trying to find a new/used hard drive for my PC, the problem is I really don't know the limits of a Presario 2266 from the frikken Bronze Age and I don't know where to look online. Can anyone help me?

Does any ne know how to retrieve old links and favorites from MSN? I had mine along time ago but I couldn't find it when I rerinstalled and upgraded it. Can you help me?
How do I convert a MKV into a DVD without losing the subtitles? (Im using AVS Video converter)
No simple way to do that. You need to strip the subtitles first into a separate file, and then convert the video, and then paste the subtitles on and create a hardsub version.
ouch.

Photobucket resizes big images. Upload to Tinypic or Imageshack so I can see clearly, I can barely read what's in there.

Okay here is a odd problem.
I can be surfing the internet and the browsers internet can just up and stop working. It can't connect to any new sites or anything. However starting a online game is fine, connects and have no lag at all.
But the browser won't work at all. FireFox and Internet Explorer doesn´t matter which i use.
There is nothing i can see in the network settings that can be causing this issue. There is two Vista computers and one WinXp computer connected to the network. The Windows Xp never have any problem, only Vista ones seems to have this issue. I connected a brand new laptop to it and it got the same problem.
I even got a new router and still same issue.
So what is causing this?
It could be the reigon or the amount of KB usage, I had this problem too, (turning on and off, randomly) but it was resolved by less KB usage.
I figured this out when playing Cave Story~

You might want to perform a scan check for data consumption, for how much data is being used up on your hardware first, then check internet connections for problems after.
I don't see how that as anything to do with internet. Do you mean check how much the network is using or?

Only thing that comes to mind is that a failed installation left some screwed values in the registry. Get yourself a registry cleaner and try weeding out some of the useless stuff left in there, and try installing again. It's the only thing I can think of.
My current computer problem is hard to explain.
Anyways.
A short story : By Rad Lionheart
Today, I was playing with FL Studio, then inexplicably my computer went fuckin' nuts on me, I was forced to reboot at the button, which is normal, I've done it many times before, then suddenly, many strange and colourful characters filled the screen, not my usual bootloader, very strange.
So I reboot again, thinking maybe it was a fluke, and this time, I'll get my bootloader, boot up into Windows, and continue where I last left off.
Nope, this time however, I got a generic bootloader error (18 if I remember correctly.)
I switched to my Mandriva disc, boot up the live disc, and looked it up.
Apparently, I need to install the bootloader again, but guess what?
None of my Linux discs will allow it, says there's no device capable of installing on. (Apparently my hard drive is now invisible!)
So then after some fiddling, I finally got the bootloader to come up, and boot into Windows.
I assumed everything was fine, until everything locked up again, and I was forced to reboot at the button.
Figuring it another fluke (It could happen, y'know.) I boot up normally again.
Oh snap, Bootloader error 15 this time! AWESOME!
So again, insert the Mandriva disc, boot up live.
And this time I decided "I'll just reinstall Mandriva and it'll reinstall the bootloader with it! PROBLEM SOLVED!"
Nope, apparently, I have no hard drive! It can't find anything to install an OS on! YAY!
So then after about another hour of booting and rebooting and unbooting and a booting to the head, I get into Mandriva (Not Windows this time, cause I know it'll [tornado fang] up again.) anyways, Mandriva is working fine, aside from the non-working bootloader, it hasn't had a problem yet.
But I still can't get into the bootloader, or windows.
So I've decided since my BlackXP disc is up and vanished due to my sister misplacing it, I have to find a quick alternative.
PJ told me my computer would more than likely work fairly well with Windows 7 installed, so it's time to give that RC a try.
It just finished downloading now, so I've gotta find a Linux based iso burner, that's free and runs well on my machine.
But anyways, my computer doesn't work, and I have to format my windows AND possibly my linux partition, if it doesn't start identifying my HDD.
In other words.
FML.

FML.
Virus maybe?
My old computer locked up completely on me once while on RPM. I clicked a board link, and the whole computer froze over. All I could do was move my mouse cursor, but nothing else. I couldnt click couldnt do anything else exept move the mouse cursor on the ice cold screen. I tried to bring up task manager, nothing, I tried rebooting the computer via Ctrl+Alt+Delete, and nothing.
I tried Rebooting via the power button on the front.(EG it turns the computer off and then I turn it back on) AND EVEN THE BUTTON DIDNT DO ANYTHING. So I didn the next (Il)logical thing. I pressed the switch on the power strip and cut off the power. When I turned the PC back on, It couldnt read my HD. We tried various things, but nothing worked. I eventually gave up and opened the HD to see if I had maybe broken the arm inside. It wasnt broken, but I assumed that by cutting off the power so abbruptly, I broke something inside of it.
Either that, Or I had gotten a virus. (The HD was brand new. an 80 gig HD that my neighbor, a \Verizon worker gave to me brand new. He had used it to work with something, but other than small usage, never really used it. So since he was done with it, he formatted it, and handed it over.)
now, onto my current issue.
My laptop, like many others, goes to sleep when I close the lid. However, when I wake it up and it goes to the user select screen, It shows my icon, (there are no other accounts) and underneath, right above the "switch user" button, it says "Locked" like my account is locked or something...
Which... It isnt... I click my Icon or tap the space bar and log back in without a problem. But it IS weird. id like to know a bit bout that...
(Vista is my OS)
I figured it was a virus of some sort.
Or hitting the power button, had some sorta strange effect on it.
Only effecting the GRUB bootloader and Windows itself though.
Anyways, I got Win7 installed now.
I already hate it.
Do want XP back kthnx.
Not sure if this is exactly a PC problem, but didn't wanna make a whole new topic about it.
I can't connect to any other IRC server than one I'm usually on. The rest give me a 10054, no matter what one I try. I even tried using them first, and IRC servers I know my friends are on won't work. I use mIRC but I downloaded Xchat, thinking the client was the problem, but xchat gives me the same errors and its really starting to irritate me.
I cannot Log out of RPM 8D. I click the Log out Button and it just takes me back to the forum index, still logged on.
Im trapped here. 8D
My disc drive just died.
You guys can't really help me, but I thought I'd share.
(Well, you could help if you guys wanted to buy me a new one.)
It seems on this computer, I can't play MIDIs. doesn't that just seem odd? can someone solve this problem pwease?
Why would you want to play Midis to begin with...?
R-P-G-M-A-K-E-R. Need I spell it out? I need playable midis that way music from rpg-maker made games won't be an issue
I have reasons to use MIDIs on my computer, so no bashing MIDI files. >:C
>:\
MIDI is the reason video game music exist. o.o;
I love MIDI....
Cos when you have an appropriate sound card or sound driver, it's really awesome.
Yamaha FM Synth for PPL who want something Genesissy. (I had one, but gave it to my dad cos now I'm using SoundBlaster)
Yamaha XG has better drum, and there is an emulate version too.
Roland Virtual Sound Canvas is more like and upgrade of Roland GM/GM2, and these are soft synth.
Also don't forget Wingroove, great MIDI player which has it's own set of instrument.
**OOPS! I forget to mention about GXSCC, for ppl who obsessed with Famicom/NES.
Mmm Genesissy...

Not just Vista; XP does the same thing. This function is often for security reasons. This system prevents computer-jacking from occurring.
Also, in recent news:
From what I've noticed, several public (and mostly non-governmental sites) have recently been attacked with Malware, which, from the sites that I've heard which were infected with them, inserts an annoying ieframe into the website affected by this malware. In most cases, it's a quick fix. However, when not treated, it can screw up websites crazy. -AC Right now, I only know of two sites that I visit which were attacked by it:
http://2kinds.com: The famous web manga about a human, a tiger girl, a banished warrior, and a gender-confused wolf. (Currently undergoing a server swap to a more secure private server and provider to stop any further damage. The manga is still viewable at www.twokindscomic.com, which serves as the archive site.)
and
www.aq.com This site is the home of AdventureQuest Worlds, which is a spinoff of the famous AdventureQuest, a game made by Artix Entertainment. (A quick fix from the AE staff easily remedied this problem.)
If you'd like, post other sites you know of that have recently been hit with this, and if you're a fan of TwoKinds. Help 'ol Tom (the author) out! ;O;
My computer sort of hanged once I installed my anti virus. It is Norton latest that I installed. Tried every thing to get it to working. But I had to do re formatting. Well anybody know why this happened please let me know
Maybe it's time to change your Anti-Virus?
I dunno what's the best, but I'm using NOD32 and I'm happy with it. No problem so far.

I don't trust Norton; It's too sensitive and Naggy. I myself prefer IoBit's Advanced SystemCare. It's got a lot of stuff for AntiVirus. Use that and Spyware Doctor, and you've got a secure system.

My computer never use to be a little slow, it was always fast and I didn't install that many programs yet it is still slow. I like to think it is the memory but I believe I have too many programs on, not it was problem before but seriously I may not have that big of a computer however it was fast before. Do you know of any methods of speeding my computer up?
1. Open Task Manager.
2. Screenshot the entire list of entries in the Processes tab.
3. Go to the Start menu, Run prompt, and type msconfig and hit enter.
4. Screenshot the entire list of Startup entries.
Post both screenshots here and I'll tell you what's wrong.

Okay, lets try this again.
I can't connect to a server on IRC (chat01.ustream.tv for ref). I know this is a problem with my computer because everyone else I know can connect to it, not to mention I can connect to it with my PSP. On my computer, I get a 10054 ping timeout anytime I attempt to. I've tried 4 different IRC programs and google has turned up nothing (Then again, google is infinitely useless these days). Anyone got a clue because I kinda need to be able to connect to this server.

BMP? [tornado fang]ing FAIL. Someone should take you permanently off the internet and not allow you within 20 yards of a computer for the rest of your life.
The list of binaries you have running doesn't feel excessive. That leaves one of three things: Either you have too many services running (unfortunately, as services can break the system, I will NOT advise you on what to stop and what not to), or you're having hardware problems, or your ESET antivirus' live protection is slowing down your system to a crawl.

Are you using a firewall? If so, you need to allow access to any IRC software to that specific port if you want to connect to it.
My hard drive just failed, it will not boot.
So I'm without a working computer now, the best I can do is what I'm doing right now.

WindowsBase is a component of the .net framework v3.0. Try downloading and installing v3.5 (the latest release) and updating your browser to the latest version (not sure about this last one, but never hurts to do so).
I could've sworn that was already installed. I'll try that again anyways.

Quick question, isn't .Net Framework supposed to give you a message when it's done installing? The bar has been full for quite a while and nothing happens.

Files and Settings Transfer doesn't work for [parasitic bomb]. Use a removable drive and manually move your files.

It should be in the Recycle Bin. If not, just make a new one and start over - if it's past the RB, it's gone. :\
go into system 32 and delete all the .dll files.

no that was me dicking around with the server for shits and giggles.
Im not sure what to do about this. I've noticed it while playing games.(especially megaman ones)
when I press fire, (usually Z or X on my keyboard,) plus the left arrow, it acts wird. like, megaman woNt slide until I let go of the arrow, or wont jump till I let go of the arrow.
Ah, I have the same problem.
I guess it's just a keyboard thing, nothing to worry about.
Use a controller instead? :3
Dont have one. But I switched it from Z and X to A and S and the problem isnt there anymore.
God damn it.
My PC [tornado fang]'d up again. Ended up having to reformat again. I still have all the 98 disks and [parasitic bomb] I had but the boot disk for 98SE isn't wanting to work properly. Tells me that there's missing paths. I can't find anything on google and the [tornado fang] who helped me before, in all his linux elitism glory, has decided not to no longer help me.
And no, I can't go any higher than 98. Maybe ME, but thats [parasitic bomb]. My computer is 11 years old. So don't even suggest it. If I had the money, I'd have a new system.
Anyone able to help me?
Get yourself XP. Believe it or not, it runs fine in a 15-years old laptop (a Compaq Armada, to be precise, which came with Win95). Your computer is more than likely able to handle it, even if you'll need to reduce some graphical effects.
I've been having a strange issue lately.
I have no idea what's causing it, or when it's starting up.
But sometimes, I'll lose all sound in any browser I use.
While Winamp will work, FL studio will work, Browsers won't, games won't.
they lose their sound, while others can.
I check my devices, and apparently there is no device for audio.
Yet, I know I do have onboard sound, and I obviously have some sound.
I try to change it to the device, but the drop down menus don't have my Realtek AC'97, so I can't.
Only a reboot, then changing it to the device, will work.
And then, it'll go out again at random.
I'd like to know how to stop it, and I'd like to know what the [tornado fang] is up with this [parasitic bomb].
Hmm. small thing I have. Whenever Movie maker is a [sonic slicer] and freezes, naturally, I have to task manager it shut. but thing is, after that, my computer acts funny. As in, for example, if I am in MS paint, and I right click and select "copy" the highlighted "copy" remains on the screen, even though the right click menu goes away. I gets stuck with a little transparent highlight bar with "copy" in it. but it hapens with whatever else I were to right click select. not just that.
The only way to get rid of it is to right click on my desktop, which brings up the right click menu, and the bar disappears from the screen, but even then, when I right click on the desktop, the menu comes up transparent, like it didn't finish "loading". when I move the cursor over it, it then comes up fully, no transparent.
My ability to click certain links stops working as well. I click and nothing happens. They don't open.
The only way to set it all right is to restart my Computer, after which that "effect" is gone. (until Movie maker is to crash again)
I was wondering why it is that happens.
BTW, the thing with the menu coming up transparent only happens on the desktop. If I right click on the internet, it comes up right.
( I accidentally posted this in the electronics discussion topic)

Ok, WTF happened to my video?

Help here to those that encountered this problem: How in the world do I remove stubborn files? Been driving me crazy for the past months when I want to free hard drive disk space and organize my programs. I did this once by resetting the PC after a scan but I don't think this applies to most stubborn folders.
Anyone?
Does anyone know a good alternative to Windows Moviemaker to edit and produce videos? Moviemaker crashes and freezes way too often. All the times of which it fucks up my system when it does.
Um, as long as you have the right video codecs installed, TMPGenc can open those videos without any real problems (http://www.tmpgenc.net/en/download.html).
It can even open WMV, MP4, FLV and so many more videos.
Then you can re-convert them to AVI for easier editing later (Just pick File > Output to File).
When I want to do some real editing, I use a mix of VirtualDubMod (http://www.free-codecs.com/download/VirtualDubMod.htm) and Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/) (for the sound).
Just extract the audio with VirtualDubMod, do your edits with Audacity and then add the sound back into your video.
You have more control over your editing that way.
Sounds nice.
Which is another thing- WMM doesnt show the video in AVI's, only the audio. Which while in some cases, is a good thing, (less steps if I want to get only music without video,) its more often than not a hassle.
Thank Vix. Ill look into it.

If need to free up some space and there are files that cannot be deleted since they are used by another person or program there is a handy little program called Unlocker I'll see if I can find a download link for you sometime later.
My friend convinced me to install iTunes for his iPod. How do I make it stop opening processes?
What do you mean stop processes as in terminate the currently running processes or stop the program from starting up on start up?
QuoteSo I booted my PC just now, and I heard "click click, click click, click click, click click" and then it showed me this screen I had never seen before.
I read over it a bit, and right there at the bottom "WARNING: Hard Disk Failure is Imminent, Please back up and replace it immediately, press (F1) to setup, press (F2) to continue"

Also, what's a good video editor for MKV files?
Media Player Classic is my personal choice, though not sure about a video editor...
Sometimes my Lappy bluescreens when I close it, instead of going into sleep mode.
in other words. I close the screen down, but instead of going to sleep mode, the computer stays on, but the screen DOES go to sleep. I cant do anything to "wake it up" though, except for shutting it down Manually from the power button. When I restart, the error report lists the error as "Blue Screen". Any way to fix this?

few time my net stops and never turns on still i restart whats the problem....XP is my OS.
My Lappy-chan's fan suddenly started becoming really loud. I think it got lose or something and it's hitting against something. It seems like I'll have to send it in, so it'll get fixed. xx

In terms of graphics and processing, Macs are miles behind PCs. So much so, in fact, they outsource to Intel to make the processors for their best models and similarly to nVidia for their graphic cards.
Did you not pick up on the sarcasm I had in my post? I thought the three OUTDATED games I listed were obvious enough.

WRONG! They're terrible in general. And this is coming from someone who's used on for the past 2 years.
Mine had been problem free for the past 5 years! XD
RAD STORY TIME:
So I was home schooled for grade 7, and I decided to try the "online" home schooling, I got a free iMac! a week later I stopped doing the online courses and went back to the regular, because I wanted to get rid of the iMac, so I gave it back to them and never touched another Apple product since.
I hate macs, used one for a week, couldn't stand to keep using it.
I'm only using one because I'm too poor to buy anything else.
The older Macs (2006) suck, the newest ones can run a Windows emulator emulating a Wii emulating Mega man 9

Sorry, but those of us who have tried using Adobe products--like Photoshop, Flash, and especially After Effects--on a Mac know that they freeze and crash...a lot. To the point where it's not a matter of if, it's a matter of when. You know when you go on a Mac that it's going to crash. It's the suspense that kills you.
I use Photoshop a lot and it's never crashed on me!

Actually, I have to disagree here. I once hung out for an entire semester in my friends Photoshop Class during my lunch breaks, and it never crashed. In fact, photoshop worked BETTER on a mac.
And this was in a room full of [parasitic bomb] old macs. like, shitty school types.
Macs are MADE for graphics, and things like art. They are not however, made for games.

Try telling that to my computer studio class this last quarter. Macs were freezing and crashing left and right. Many were getting seriously frustrated because they had to keep starting over--despite having saved frequently. Macs apparently like to lose data--a lot.

It's recommended that Mac users, when buying a new Mac/their first Mac. To replace the mouse with something that has all the standard functions a mouse should have.

Protip: Do not close a certain program in the database of your hardware, you will have to forcefully restart the program (by that, unplug and plug the plug back in) in order to get it to open again.
Does anyone know enough about wireless internet connections? My cousin has one and although it finds some hotspots, most of the good ones are password protected and secured while the unsecured Linksys connections pretty much sucks and doesn't work at all sometimes. Does anyone have a solution for this problem?
Ask for their WEP.
You could try getting your own connection instead of trying to steal other people's internet?
Wep keys solve everything. You can get it from his router. It should be somewhere on it.

My computer always shut downs automatically when I play games this only occured when I changed my video card so what should I do?It seems thay my computer is always hot when I play games so...should i add more exhaust fans on my computer?
Okay my friend recently got this Mp4,video, mp3 player called:
DMTech MP409. I plug it in first, forgetting to install drivers from cd. It loads fine and computer finds it. Okay i say and load in a regular mp3.
Runs and plays fine. I put in a AVI file:
Can not read file, wrong file format. Um it's a AVI!
So i install the program from the cd called Avi converter. I convert the file and put it on the inbuilt hard drive.
Can not read file, wrong file format.
I then read the instruction manual, it cleary says how to do it. So i follow the instructions.
Can not read file, wrong file format.
Maybe it needs to uptade firmware? So i install the Refresh Firmware program according to the manual. I also try install the drivers FOR the USB from the cd.
Better drivers already installed. Okay fine. I load up the program and....
Can not find USB.
I check the cable and it's plugged in. So i uninstall the usb and XP instant installs it again.
Grr... what should i do? I really wanna try at least 1 video on the player. He already have a working MP3 player so this would be nice to view videos on the bus or car rides.

Your power supply is overheating. Upgrade it.
I'm hoping I could get a second opinion on this problem so here it goes.
I recently bought Left 4 Dead 2 and played that for an hour, but then when I played Modern Warfare 2, the graphics were all glitched up. Basically, there were these random lines popping up everywhere. All over the weapon models, player models, and all over the maps. The weird thing is that this didn't happen until today right when after installing L4D2.
(http://thumbnails13.imagebam.com/6120/67318e61194870.gif) (http://www.imagebam.com/image/67318e61194870)
These are my specs:
Windows Vista
Dell Inspiron 1420 Laptop
Nvidia GeForce 8400M GS
Intel Duo Core T5250 @ 1.50 GHz
2 GB RAM
28.5 GB of free space
I know the graphics card is a little old (I've had my laptop for about 2 years), however, it ran MW2 just fine on low settings. It ran COD4 and Left 4 Dead and Team Fortress 2 just fine as well on fairly low settings. I downloaded the latest drivers to see if that'll fix anything, but it didn't work. I don't think reinstalling the games would do anything either since I recently installed Day of Defeat: Source, but the graphics were still messed up.
What can I do to fix this problem?
I'd blame Infinity Ward.
Now now, I know they really screwed the PC gamers, but they did good with COD4... But seriously though, how do I fix this problem?
Oh I know it's a decent game, but the PC port is worse than...Halo 2!
But uh, I don't know.
Clean installed the new drivers?
Often times when I had a problem, I would make a manual clean up of the old drivers then install the newest ones.
Otherwise I don't know what could help, your card isn't that great, and it's a bit dated.
Perhaps trying to force an earlier DirectX would help clear it up?
Or maybe DX needs an update?
Hmmm, I dunno if it's a correct thread but...
I have a problem. I'm in the mood for some EY-AM-VEE making, but Sony Vegas creates problems.
You see, some of the videos I want to use, are encoded using ffdshow, instead of xvid or divx.
And those videos are played by pretty crappy. As in, the video is so glitchy, it's impossible to do anything with it.
So, I have a question... can I somehow solve it without re-encoding most of my friggin' videos?
Also, I have FFdshow installed and am using Vegas 8.
Dunno if this should be here, but whatever.
Ok, right now I'm trying to install Umineko no Naku Koro Ni in my laptop, but the installation just won't work, it always freezes and I have to cancel it =/ Oh, and I'm using Vista.
Happened to me the other when installing Chiru. Run the install through AppLocale and it would work properly. Make sure you've installed eastern languages compatibility. If when you run ON-Scripter you get that Umineko won't work on Vista, try using Compatibility Mode set on XP SP3, it worked for me on W7
I used AppLocale to run the launcher, and it was fine, but when I clicked Install the installer was using those weird symbols instead of Japanese and the installation never finishes =/ If I try to use AppLocale with the installer directly it won't even open =/

Sounds like a Browser Hijacker and possibly a Trojan. I recommend Malware byte's Anti Malware. It's absolutely free, and performs as good as something you would pay for. Unlike Spyware Doctor, you don't have to pay to delete infections.

Well, if you grow desperate try doing the following:
- Copy the 'fullscr' folder to your hard drive. This seems to have all the files from the main install directory
- Now copy 'BGM', 'ME', 'movie', 'screenshot' (which is empty but w/e), 'SE' and 'sys_se'
inside 'fullscr'
- Extract the English patch there
This is pure speculation on my part, but you should have all the files the VN uses. I don't think Umineko uses the registry or anything else. It's a freaking doujin VN after all.
Well, that did the trick. Thanks a lot.
Is there a program i could retrieve back any files better in a formatted harddrive?I still think Recover My Files sucks.......cause it recovered a huge number of renamed junk i dont even know what it is -_-
Well if you formatted your drive, it's theoretically possible assuming you didn't put very many files on it after formatting it but such a pain in the ass that it's not worth it.

MPC's all you need really.
Hrm.
On Hamachi, I keep getting a VPN Network Adapter Error, despite it being fine less than a week ago.
Another issue would be Ventrilo, which used to work fine as well, but now seems to hit insane amounts of ping, so I can only assume they're related.

Tried looking in the Task Manager?
Under Processes, check if "wmplayer.exe" is still there.
If it is, End Process it.
Thanks. That works.
Any player will run anything, if you have the correct codecs installed. Download K-Lite, which comes with Media Player Classic, and it'll come with all the codecs you need.
I thought CCCP was the only thing anyone would ever need for codecs.
So basically, there were these files that apparently nuked a laptop and caused it to constantly BSOD. I don't understand the full working behind the problem, but it's supposedly a new virus. We're looking for a solution that will atleast make the laptop operable again. I do believe the cause are drivers that got borked.
I'm sure anyone dabbling in BSOD will understand what these files are. If you can figure out which files are borked and a solution to fix it, I would be very, very grateful. Thank you for your time, RPMers.

When I put headphones into my laptop's headphone port, it only produces sound through the left piece, and the right is absent. Is my port [tornado fang]'d, and if so, anyone know how to fix it?
I get that sometimes with mine, I fiddle with it's volume control and sometimes it helps.
Otherwise, it sounds like your headphones are just set to monaural.
I should add that the headphone jack is quite loose in the port (it wiggles a bit, instead of staying firm, as it should be) and if I try move it too much, it cuts off sound altogether. Up until this morning, it produced sound in both, but I had to move it around a bit to get the right spot, or else it would just produce it from one side.
Any ideas?
I'm not even sure if this is a bug, but it's been bothering me for a while now. So, after installing Windows 7, WLM and WMP both don't minimize the way they did in Vista. Demonstration:

Hello Fellow Acer user! :D
This may not be a problem, but a tip.
You know those large file sizes you get after each scan right? I think this solves it:
First of all.. Scan the image, secondly, open up paint. Third, while viewing the scanned image, press the Print screen key, then right after that right click + paste onto MS Paint, be sure to get the desired height (I recommend 10 x 10, since when pasted it automatically resizes the border to the image's widith).
Lastly, take the recent scan, cut it, and open a new MS Paint file. Paste it in there, and save it as "Name" and PNG, then upload to anywhere you wish.
I might make the entire process done in picture form too if needed.
for my inaugural post here, I have TWO problems. One is my computer with XP service pack 3 installed. I came across the rouge anti-spyware known as "XP internet security 2010". After running Malwarebytes anti-malware I reset my computer and it will no longer boot up. it reaches a BSOD and stops doing anything.
The other problem is my mom's Acer Aspire laptop. it had some problem during disc consistency check and started BSOD'ing. now it doesn't even get to the BSOD and constantly rebooting in a cycle. shes been trying to fix it with no luck.

should check what error the BSOD says is happening., get to another computer, and search it up. If only DZ were here...

Reformatted the [parasitic bomb] out of that.
Ah [tornado fang], I had files I didn't want to lose...
If you have an external HDD and another computer you can crack open the external and put your HDD in the shell and hook it up to another computer. This will allow you to sweep for viruses and backup your stuff.
If you switch your HDD to slave and run it as an extra HDD on another PC, you can do the same thing. It might be too much work tho, but it can be done.
It will become a 2nd HDD when you run it on another PC, and you can do some backups and stuff before you switch it back to master and reformat it. It might be faster if you do have an easy-to-open external HDD shell with a USB port or something. ^^; </wii>
To add to that-
http://www.scribd.com/doc/1017139/0x00000024
at the bottom it says the "if you cant get to your system" options.
To be honest, I have both the old OS and the new OS (I installed a copy of XP Professional I had on a disc, so now I have BOTH XP's on that PC.) I can't access my old files (Which means I lost access to my folders and stuff, along with things like IE8 (Which means I'm stuck with a non-working IE6.) and my Internet Adapter Files, which means i'm stuck with a mediocre computer with a screen size that is TOO BIG, WITH NO INTERNET. On the plus side, I was lucky to have managed to get back my Old DOS games (Doom, Duke Nukem, etc.) and All my Program Files are still accessible. I might be able to pull through.

As of this writing, I am now able to use my Old computer again, and its fully updated. Sadly I lack the ability to use Norton 360 ATM, but it will be returned shortly.
Ok, so I just downloaded Media Player Classic to to watch my anime files with .MKV, but the subtitles don't show and some don't even have audio, what do I need?
Turn on the right audio channel, and turn on subtitles?
Doesn't let me.
I don't know then, I don't watch subtitled or multi-audio videos.
First, go here: CCCP (http://www.cccp-project.net/) That "might" solve your problem.
Next, check your Audio drivers and make sure they are updated, also check your setting and make sure that the audio is enabled.
Lastly, Make sure your Media Player is pointed to the right directory where the subtitles are stored, if they are combined into the .MKV file, check your subtitle settings within the player.

Does anyone know how to reset this?
Hey there, you crazy techies. STM's been having his computer act up lately with some fun BSODings. Perhaps one of you can help me track down the little bastard component causing it.
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
Stop Error 0x0000000A (0x498D4151, 0x00000002, 0x000000000, 0x804D9AFA)
It's obviously some driver causing an issue, though I've not upgraded anything in while. Think it could be some hardware failing?
(God I wish Microsoft would make these things easier to read for ordinary people. Hate cryptic errors.)
I'm not one hundred percent on this one, but I am pretty sure that's a fake screen saver designed to look like a BSOD.
You may try running this to uninstall the screen saver. (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897558.aspx)
Failing that, try this:
http://www.tweaksforgeeks.com/IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL.html
Can't be a screensaver since I've never installed that and all scans from my scumware detectors came back negative.
I had a feeling it had to do with the system temp and thus the fan. Here's where it gets fun. The bolt that secures the fan in the system is jammed and the philips-style slot to remove it is stripped.
Well, good news for me. I managed to get my computer in full working order again, I managed to retrieve my files that were "Lost" so now Its like I never lost my computer to an NTFS Glitch! :D
Now If I could get the damn speakers to work...
Right, figured I'd try here. My computer can't recognize .exes. It can activate them, but I have to left click and scroll down to the option labeled start, double clicking makes it want to open the exe using another program for some reason. I already looked into my rundll32.exe, which wasn't the problem apparently.

This isn't a problem with my computer or anything but I figured this was the best place to ask. Quick question, I'm getting a netbook soon for school and I don't anything beefed up...I just need to know...does Microsoft 7 come with Works? Or does it vary from laptop to laptop? Thanks in advance.

Depends. Also, you'd only be able to get a digital copy because netbooks don't have CD/DVD drives. Netbooks are only designed to go on the internet. They have very little space and RAM, so even asking it to handle Office is a bit too demanding. Get a laptop if you want to do things like that.

Windows XP, 32 bit version.
It sounds like a program has become associated with .exe files. That's really weird.
Yeah, I fixed the problem on my own. And by that I mean a few choice words, google, and a link to this website: http://www.dougknox.com/
Thanks anyway though.
I have trouble recovering my portable hard drive and just plain creating a partition for it now. Because of a blackout that occurred in my area, my netrwork shares are gone and my portable harddrive has been corruptesd so I attempted to restore said harddrive meanwhile making sure that the other is alright. I found that I could not access the harddrive so I attempted to format it however I accidentally deleted all my files on my good portable harddrive :upset: as well as my other one. I am trying to recover my files while create an NTFS partition om external harddrives but I keep getting that I cannot access the drives neither can reformat because the drives aren't partition so I am basically roaming around in circles. Can anyone help me?

If all you really need is a simple word processor, Wordpad will get the job done. It comes with Windows, usually in Accessories and has good file support. I recommend .rtf for most versatility while keeping formatting.
He could also download OpenOffice from openoffice.org. It's free and has equivalent programs for the entire Microsoft Office suite.
Ok, this is weird. My microSD memory says that it's using 1.8 GBs, but at the most it only has like 360 MB. The first number would make sense if a folder that somehow disappered some days ago when my brother was using it was still there, but if it's there I don't see it anywhere in the memory =/
Any idea anyone?
Try plugging it to a Linux machine, the folder might just pop up. ._.
Don't have access to one =/
Anyways, I should correct myself, it's not the folder which disappeared, it was all of its contents, and after seeing that there was nothing I deleted it.
Well, Linux has this way of revealing such stuff...
Either way, if you can, it's one way to try out.
The "Fn" key on my laptop isn't functioning properly. I am using an ASUS Eee PC 1005HA. Anybody know a solution to my problem?
EDIT: I restarted my laptop and it's now working again. Disregard this post.
ok so ive come over to my grandmas house to stay for the weekend
her computer is gorgeous and i love it
but i think i ended up breaking it
last night i was trying to do things and my mouse was acting up so BAD
it kept clicking when i wouldn't click, dragging when i wouldn't drag, and getting stuck in some windows
i couldn't even move it to my start button to bring up the restart option
so i turned off the power source, and when i tried to boot it up again, nothing
windows won't start
at all
i tried to get tech support but once your warrantee is up, they dont give a [tornado fang]ing [parasitic bomb]
also, new computers sold in the united states no longer come with a copy of the windows system disk
i'm really upset guys, please help me if you can!!
Hmmm, that is very strange. I have a feeling it might have something to do with the Hard Drive. Try substituting it for another one.
Describe what it does when it starts up. Does the BIOS start up? (It's the first screen you'll see, it's what loads the OS) There may be hope yet if it does.
Oh FFS, how the hell am I supposed to download any trials from the adobe website? -___-
So I got a new printer this week (a HP Officejet 6500 E709n Series model to be percise). and every time I print ONE blank page (or any page.. period) from MS Paint, it goes batshit and prints 6 of the same thing. How do I solve this?
What the [tornado fang] just happened here?

I think a glitch as something just failing to load.
I clicked paste and the link went in, then suddenly, it turned like that. :\
Just a glitch, I'm sure. Has it done it since?
no. But I had a long ass post of pixiv pictures and it was lost. So I ragequit. >:C
Heh, well if it hasn't happened again, don't worry about it. Can't you find the same pics you were posting and try again? This time without using the Quick Reply box?
Oh yeah, theyre all on my photobucket. but they were alot, and now I have to get the pixiv account links all over again. And remember which pics were by which artist.
I never knew about the presence of quick reply actually.
What is it good for?
Heh, that could be annoying. Should've done the normal reply box after; would've had better luck, I'm sure.
@borock: not much, at least when someone posts whilst I'm using it. *glare*
With a Quick-Reply you can use bulletin board code and smileys as you would in a normal post, but much more conveniently.

It used to have smilies and stuff, but somewhere along the line it got shrunken into the state it is in now.
Before the crash it had the buttons for stuff. after, it didnt anymore.
...
Vixyyyy~ is it possible to get that back?
You guys don't type them out yourself anyway?
I don't click smilies, I don't click the youtube button, I'm the master of BBCode! I do it all manually!
I type it all out as well; I'm just saying it used to.
The smilies button and all that were probably an additional plug-in that didn't get installed after the crash.
Since I use the quick reply box, I type them out myself. But its always nice to have the buttons... /O3O\

Internet connection.
Check for registry errors and delete old files that are unnecessary. (i.e. Disk Cleanup and defrag) Consider using Spybot search and destroy as well. (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html))

So, the color on your monitor is distorted? Did you try... cleaning / readjusting your monitor cable?

NOW. Since servicing it didnt seem to work as a permanent solution, lets see if you guys know whats the problem.
Recently my screen started flickering vertically. like what an old TV does. and physically adjusting the screen would make it better or worse. eventually not helping at all. I sent it to be serviced, and got it back a week or so later, good as new, no flickering. the sheet says they replaced a part called on the paper, "Heatsink Assem".
Now with some googling, I THINK it has something to do with the fan. But now, almost 2 weeks after I got it back, ITS STARTED FLICKERING AGAIN.
Not as bad as it started the first time, this time it only seems to be when I adjust the screen position, but still, wtf?
can you help, RPM? Ive still got I think- 2 more services before they replace it with a new laptop of equal value.
Send it back again, and make sure they know their first fix did NOT work. Honestly it sounds like a lose cable, not a heatsink part... How a heatsink has any effect on an LCD screen is beyond me.
Might as well replace it with a new one if that's the case. I know I would if I had that option.
I HAVE heard Acer has lots of problems.
Also, yeah I figured it was a cable too.
Im going to send it again.
I have too.
Desktop: I got one for 60$, then I added 2GIGs of RAM for another 136$, so that puts up the desktop at 2.97 of RAM, and got a 320 GIG Hard Drive for 90$.....I think, it was a few weeks back when I got it.
LAPTOP: Apparently my laptop is considered an "old laptop", it can only nab on to 2GIGs, so I got them for tomorrow, compared to 512 I have right now, the dude said I will be amazed how better the lappie will perform then.
SO FAR THAT BRINGS TO A TOTAL OF: 422$
That's what I've been told, but the damage has been done.

To elaborate; I use Winamp for music exclusively, Zoom Player (with CCCP) for video, and VLC for anything Zoom Player can't seem to play.
For whatever reason, my Java doesn't work. I can't uninstall it, due to an error, and I can't reinstall, cause I have to uninstall first.
Ugh...
WIPE OUT YOUR COMPUTER!!!! jk...
...Uh?
I don't know much about it but unles there's like a specific way of repairing it then great but if not, I most the time just save the stuff I wanna save on a Flash drive then wipe the system back to factory settings.
Also: I have a Windows XP, if I wanted to convert it to Windows 7, would it wipe out the things I had on there before or no?
I just don't see why you posted if it was pretty much irrelevent, I don't mean to come off as a [Bumpity-Boom!], but, I'm just saying.
Umm,ok, if there is no other known method to fix the issue you having would you: 1. Hastle around the net cuze Java no good. Or 2. Do a total wipe out and reinstall Java.
That's how I look at it at the least.

It would probably [tornado fang] up your computer, unless it's compatible with Windows 7. I would know, my Mom tried to install XP on a 98 few years back and it screwed up the entire Hard Drive. It all depends how much memory you have, and if video and sound cards and such are all compatible with 7. This is all from what I know that is.
As for whether it would keep the files, I'm not entirely sure. Back them up, just to be safe.
You'll have to manually unistall Java then.
Make a system restore point first.
Go to the Program Files under C, then find the folder named "Java." Rename the folder so that it has an .old extension to it. It should say "Java.old" We don't want to delete it just yet.
Then, go to run and type "regedit"
You'll find a few folders in here, the one we're looking for is "HKEY LOCAL MACHINE." Click on the Plus sign, then click on Software in the directory. Find the Java folder in the software directory, mine was named Javasoft, so it may be named that for yours. Rename the folder so that it has an .old extension, like where we did for the folder in the program files.
Delete any Start menu shortcuts.
Try installing it now. If everything works okay after a few days, delete the folders. Although it wouldn't be a bad idea to make another system restore before you chunk them

My MP3 is frozen at the screen, do you think I need to give a rest? Or it is something else?
MP3 player? Pull the battery.
But where is the battery?
I guess I didn't elaborate at the time of posting, my MP3 worked just fine not too long ago until the evening after I charged the player. I tried to turn it on but it stays at the "Hello" screen but it doesn't go to the screen where all the options are like it usually does. I like to think I needed to give it break for awhile and resetting it doesn't it help matters I don't know if it is the files I downloaded or maybe it burned out but it is not working now. Maybe I screwed up the chips or something?
Try checking the booklet that came with it. Usually it's pretty obvious, sometimes sealed with a screw. If all else fails, google it.
It could very well be burned out or damaged form an impact or short. If the battery pull doesn't fix anything, consider getting it fixed, or replaced.
Sometimes MP3 players have a reset button. Try hitting that.
Let's start with the most obvious question.
What kind of MP3 player?
It is Visual land.
Have you done all the other stuff mentioned already? Namely popping the batteries out? I know you said you already did a manual reset and that didn't help, so.
Assuming a battery pop doesn't work, you may want to consider formatting it. I'm assuming you have all the stuff on the player backed up somewhere. If that doesn't work, Visual Land offers online support via an email form.
Try letting the battery run dry, so it turns off. then connect it to the charger and turn it on, see what happens. thats happened to me with another mp3 before.
Ok guys, I need some serious help with my laptop.
Since yesterday at night it hasn't been able to boot up. I turn it on, all the usual lights turn on, the fan starts moving, but one second later it stops gets way quieter than usual and the monitor doesn't even turn on. It started yesterday after I left it on sleep mode for a while, when I wanted to turn it on again what I just described happened. I tried turning it off myself with the power button and then turn it on, I let it rest for hours since something similar happens when it heats up quite a bit (first an hour, and then all night), I tried taking out the battery, I tried letting the battery run out by itself to see if it did anything, but nothing I did helped even a little =/
Seriously guys, I really need help with this ASAP since I have a project there to finish x____x
Who made your laptop and what's the model?
HP Pavillon dv4 or something.
Does it post?
I remember when something similar to that happened, one of the RAM sticks had to come out to boot.
That's actually what I was about to suggest, reseating the ram, or removing a ram stick if you have more than one.
Looks like all you need is a phillips screwdriver to open it up.

Well, thanks guys, but it's not necessary anymore (not in a good way but still).
Well don't hold out on us. What was the problem with it?
Repair guy that usually helps us told me over the phone that it probably had something to do with the video card or something, and told me to go with the guys at HP since it would be easier. I did and went to the one that's like 2 blocks away, they told me to call costumer service since they don't receive that kind of model there (-___-). I called them, they then told me the system said that I didn't have a warranty anymore despite having bought an extension, so they said that I should go to the place where I bought it. I did that (you can probably imagine I was quite annoyed by now), they checked the laptop, talked over the phone with I dunno who since my mother was taking care of that part, said that it probably was the video card and I should send it for repairs to HP *sigh*

Yup. They should be able to give you an estimate. Not sure if it'll cost you for them to examine and give an estimate though. I only do it as a side job, so I don't usually charge for that but they might being it's their primary income source. Reminds me of the time when I charged 15$ an hour, thinking it was high. Come to find out people typically charged about 70$ an hour for the same service. And now I work for the police.
Help please? My dad recently bought an HP Photosmart wireless D1100 printer for his new 2 month old HP Windows 7 laptop. And cant install it. The installation always fails. the Printer just isnt recognized by the computer, even with drivers, disks, nothing.
Thing is though, it installed just fine on MY computer. A 2 year old Acer Windows Vista.
Figure that [parasitic bomb] out. It should be the other way around! XD
Weve tried just about EVERY way to get this thing on, and even the Geek Squad is stumped. (3 hours. 3 hours we spent in best buy. 3! Just on this thing!) The only solution they can offer is that it may be some sort of system error, and therefore, try resetting 7 to factory settings.
He doesnt really have much on there yet, (just some pics, all of which are already backed up) so there isnt much issue, but it would be a hassle, and Im almost dead certain the problem wouldnt be fixed.
We even tried it WITH the wire. Nothing. It says that if it has the USB cord it should automatically install drivers. But it doesnt. this printer just doesnt exist.
Help? Before our heads go through the wall in frustration?
the error it gives is 0x00000057
It would seem that the printer isn't supported by windows 7. I've seen posts of where the CD says for you to upgrade to XP or vista.
Try using the Deskjet 970cse (or 970cxi) drivers from Add Printer. If it isn't there, use Windows update. If that doesn't work, take it back to the store and get a newer one, or atleast one that supports 7.
yeah. the CD disk says on it that it works with 7 though.
We tried the 970 deskjet, and it works, but now the test page never finishes printing. (printing stops a few seconds in, and the page just stays there.)
So, whenever I open Ventrillo and go on a server, it'll screw up my audio in other things. Even if I'm so much as on there for 10 seconds without saying or hearing anything, it'll do this.
Basically, sounds/music/whatever will go mono and even badly muffled if it comes in too quietly. The moment it gets loud enough, it'll switch back to clear Stereo. After a bunch of messing around, I can definitely say it's Vent causing this, as I don't have the issue until after I run it at all. Some specs that might be of use:
Sound Driver: Conexant High Definition SmartAudio 221
Headphones: Sennheiser PC 151
Volume is usually around 24%. Increasing it doesn't make a difference. Media player doesn't affect it either.
The options I'm given for output on Ventrillo are:
"Default wave mapper" ("Default DirectSound Device" if "Use Direct Sound" is checked)
"Speakers (Conexant High Definition SmartAudio 221)"
There's also some Hardware Input Mixer thing. No clue what it does, but it's optional anyways.
Any ideas?
This is not good for me but my sister got some malware attack on her computer. I tried using the restore point but it came back and that worked before on ym computer. I just don't know if I can just remove it especially when the cd rom drive is not working so I cannot restore anything. What can I do? I might be in trouble again and I don't want to make things worst. I hate malware, the hackers who invented it and it is not as though my dad trusts most programs beside ESET anyway.
I suppose you've tried using antivirus? Malware bytes is a really good program, and best of all, it's free.
What Hiryu said.
How far back did you go in system restore? Try going real far back. If it came back, it might come back again, but it's worth a try.

I did before when I was trying to repair my dad's compute but he doesn't trust it that much due to it looking similar to the very similar to what I was fighting against. I don't know if its all that reiable since I need to pay to get a full version. Will a crack be acceptable? I am not sure but it may or may not workout. Can trust it it? I don't know.
There are lots programs that make you pay to upgrade to 'full version' in order to 'get rid of this one evil threat' on your computer that the program just happens to detect.
These are actually frauds that download the virus onto your computer to make you panic and pay to get rid of it.
There are lots of free antivirus/antimalware programs out there that don't do this.
Looking for a crack for a program usually results in a bunch of other things being downloaded into your computer. For the record. I don't really feel qualified to give recommendations, but you can search around.
Try "Avast!". I recommend it, and I install it on all the PCs in my work place too (net cafe). ^^
My computer's OS won't load, I had a blue screen that say that ther eis a file that doesn't work or somehting and now OS won't load. What should I do?
Does it give you some sort of error message when it tries to load Windows or about your hard drive's boot sector/boot record? Try to find your OS's startup/installation disk.
Also, can you tell us who made your computer and what type of model it is?
Its an HP Vectra VL400 SF and now my desktop cannot see the monitor. I attempted to look on inside to try and fix but it cannot see my monitor or my hard drive. Did I mess up something or did mess uo a certain part? It seems like things are screwing up on me. I am such [tornado fang]ing idiot.
It could be possible that the virus has corrupted your system files. This is a grave situation.
The easiest thing to do would to wipe the hard drive and re-intsall windows. But that's only if everything else fails. It could be possible that you can save your files.
Contact HP for detailed technical support.
I'll try that, I will lose some filex but at least its better than nothing.
The amount of people who believe that having to reformat means the loss of files is amazing. As long as your laptop can boot from a CD, and you have a flash drive or other USB storage medium, there's a fairly easy way to go about getting your files back before reformatting the PC.
If you'd like the details, send me a PM. That is unless you've already gone ahead and wiped everything.
And yes, I do this kind of stuff for a living.
I'm not sure if anyone can help me with my problem. Here's the TL:DR version:
Quote from: ViperAcidZX @ DoujinStyle
Long story short: Thanks to Norton for being a greedy s.o.b. and we refuse to play a fee to keep anti-virus protection going, a bunch of viruses and malware attacked my brother's computer and SeaGate GoFlex 1TB external hard drive. We took care of the viruses and malware on the PC, but brother's worried about the viruses still plaguing the external hard drive. That external hard drive has all of my personal belongings; doujin games, my RKS guide, music, pictures, anime, etc., and I want to be able to use it again.
If there's anyway to save it and purge the viruses on it without destroying all of our stuff in it, I'd really appreciate any possible help I can get.
Other TL:DR version: http://amethystviper.deviantart.com/journal/39873424/
I installed Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware and Avast, while my brother installed AVG, which was
after the fiasco. All of the viruses and malware that was in the PC was dealt with already, but my brother's worried about the infection that's in the 1TB external hard drive and I need to know if there's a way to purge any remaining viruses from it.
So I was in the middle of playing a game when my laptop suddenly went to sleep on me. After managing to wake it up, it just went back to sleep again. Fed up, I forced shut-down. When I booted it back on, it kept turning itself off before it even finished loading Windows. At some point or other I also got a BSoD. I think I still have a warranty, and I just backed up most stuff I care about yesterday, so really all I'd like to know is a rough idea of what this might be: Hardware failure, or some sort of virus?
EDIT: A friend said to hit F8 on start up. After doing it twice, everything is working. Weird. Now to run a virus check

As a precursor; there is always a risk of infection from a virus even if you have the latest virus definitions. No virus protection is 100% effective. You lower the risk by keeping things up to date, but new viruses are made every day and until analyzed there is no anti-virus solution for it. This procedure always carries a risk, as you are plugging a potentially virus infected file system into your PC. That said, let's continue...
Make sure you have anti-virus, anti-spyware, and anti-adware programs installed and all up to date on the PC you will be using to plug the external harddrive into.
IMPORTANT
Before you plug the external harddrive into the PC, go to your control panel and DISABLE auto play for everything. Some viruses will try to automatically launch via Window's AutoPlay feature.
Next, plug the drive in and wait for it to recognize. DO NOT OPEN THE DRIVE IN THE FILE BROWSER. Then you want to use your anti-virus to do a scan on the external harddrive. Repeat for anti-spyware and anti-adware programs. There is no way to tell what was infected without doing this, and no way to recover files damaged by the virus. Whatever is damaged is damaged, you can only get back what is there to get back. That said, this is your best shot for getting anything back at all.
That's pretty much all there is to it.

Forcing the shut down probably damaged a system file, or caused a configuration file to be cut short. When you used F8, and I assume you selected "Last known good configuration", it restored a previous version of the file you cut short by forcing the shutdown.
Hard to say what caused the laptop to go to sleep on you suddenly though.
problem RPM. My laptop was turned off from the power switch, when it went back on, it updated, but now all of a sudden, it isnt able to start windows. it just doesnt boot up. nothing seems to work here. system repair doesnt do [parasitic bomb], my recovery discs only offer to restore factory settings.
Id like to if possible, FIX the problem, or at least recover some of my files before resetting....
my pal thinks I may have corrupted the boot sector somehow.
Boot sector corruption is possible. What exactly does it do, step by step, from the time you turn it on to when it stops working and shuts off? I'm guessing there is a blue screen somewhere in there, in which case it'll tell you what is wrong. Write down/snap photo/whatever, just get that message and post it here.
I turn on from the power button. the Acer screen comes up, with the option to press F2 to go to settings, etc etc. after that, it tries to load, (a loading bar appears and loads) but then goes to a screen that says "windows was unable to start"
And it gives me the option to start Windows Repair, or Start windows normally. Starting windows normally just brings me back to the same screen.
I then press the power button, and it just shuts off, no delay or wait or anything, since it just never booted up windows to begin with.
Ill take pictures later if I can. My friend is gonna lend me his Vista CD to see if it can repair windows somehow. and the same pal from before is gonna see what he can figure out about this [parasitic bomb]. If all is lost, he can at least offer me the ability to access my drive and salvage some files. (Ubuntu or something I think?)
It does sound like something went wrong with the update that was installed. I'm betting it messed up your system files more than it did with the boot sector, though. Repairing windows would be your best action to take, imo. If that doesn't work, it is probably the boot sector.
Yikes. That sounds bad.
Reminds me of when WinXP SP3 updates totaled my installation once. Even if you CAN restore your installation, I'd be really inclined to say back everything up and reinstall anyway just to be on the safe side.
God damn vista. i swear, im upgrading to 7. I dont care if it would blow my birthday money that i was saving for games, this [parasitic bomb] pissed me off.

I just got it a few weeks ago (skipped Vista). It's great, but you'd think Windows Update would handle driver downloads for Microsoft's own hardware. It doesn't. My X-Box 360 controller (which I bought for the sole purpose of using as a PC pad) freaked the ever-loving hell out of my USB ports after I unplugged it (I got that constant unknown device connect/disconnect error) until I manually downloaded the driver from their website (http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/en-us/d/xbox-360-wireless-controller-for-windows).
A lot of things can cause that error, I understand, but I figured I'd share my experience just in case.
I manaeged to address the problem of my hard drive to a media test failure and the problem with the drive itself. I tried changing IDE controllers but I still get a PXE-MOF abd PXE-e61. What should I do?
Edit: nevermind I resolved it already.

Are there any programs that will allow to repair corrupted files after file recovery? I had managed to recover my files on the computer but some of them I got corrupted on recovery. Is there ay to repair the files if they are NTFS files?
Unfortunately, last I knew, there aren't really any easy or simple ways to fix a file corruption.
Part of the problem is the manner in which a file becomes corrupted. It boils down to one concept; change. A file can become corrupted for a few reasons, such as;
- there is more data in the file than it should have
- there is less data in the file than it should have
- the file allocation is missing parts or formed incorrectly
- something changed in the file that shouldn't be
How does corruption occur? Some reasons include;
- that portion of the hard drive is broken/bad/error-ed out, which makes the file partially unreadable. The data is lost.
- a program gets interrupted, or crashes, when saving a file
- power loss to the operating system
- viruses
Simply put, how would a program ever know which is the case, and know how to add or subtract the exact portions back? In some cases, the data is lost for good, so how can it repair the file? Etc. If it's simply a file table error, I can see where it MIGHT be possible to repair the allocation, or salvage some data. But other than that, you're pretty much up [parasitic bomb] creek.
This is why people back up things.
@OBJECTION MAN
Then I recovered some files for h, it is like some of them work but some of them don't. I wish that I had simply repaired the files a long while ago and not recovering them is more or a hassle now. I have no one but myself to blame either. -AC Well, I guess if there is something out there that will allow me to reapir files I might be able to find it but I guess I have no use for useless files. I might as well get rid of them althoiugh there are actually very few files I wanted to recover. Thanks anyway.
What type of files were they anyway?
They were txt, exe, url, dll, zip and rar files. Some of the were just savestates, roms and emualtors I recovered.

Txt is fairly easy to get a partial recovery out of. Exe, yeah you're screwed on those ones. DLL, Zip, Rar, same deal. Those files are the ones that if you have one tiny bit missing and the whole architecture falls completely apart.
I guess I will stick with text until I find some replacements but how do repair the text files?
You probably wont be able to "repair" but rather recover the partial data. Try loading into different text programs, or even a hexeditor. You may have to do some bit offsetting depending where the damage is.
I'll give it a try.
Edit: I decided to give up on theproject, I realize that a large majority of the files I can find on the internet anyway and I have copies of said files that work well (I overcomplicate things :P). I still have my favorites intact. 8) Thanks anyway
For some reason I can't open my mail on MSN, even though I am signed in, and it doesn't look like it refuses to load the "Messenger" portion of the Hotmail section of Hotmail. Has anyone experinced this and does know how to solve it?
I got this jsut as I was downloading a torrent file but it seems to happen whenever I try to move a large file. Just what exactly is going on? I installed my HD well the other day and it didn't have these problems before today. I checked the hardware and its installed fine but I wodner if this a software problem. Did anyone else get this and if so how did you resolve it? I never had this problem before (in my computer at least).
What exactly did you get? An error message?
Well, it was error message that said that it oculdn't complete tthe download. IT was due to a "Delayed Write Failure" or soemthing. It doesn't appear now but I am not taking any chances on this.
Is this an external hard drive?
ITs an internal hard drive and things seem a little better now.
Basically a delayed write failure is the fault of windows itself. For whatever reason, be it too busy at the time or whatever, Windows doesn't always write to a drive right away. This is also another reason crashes and power outages aren't good for computers.
Most commonly this is seen with USB storage devices when you just yank the drive out without doing the "Safely Remove Hardware" thing, thus why I asked if it was external. This is seen most often with programs like Microsoft Word, and other MS Office software due to the way it saves files.
It sounds like this happened a lot, and constantly. For some reason Windows was halting on writing the files in question. I can't say for certain why Windows was halting, and likewise I cannot rule out faulty hardware either. It could very well be the drive is bad, or it could just be a glitch in windows that just went away now.
Without a physical examination of the machine, I can't really say much more than that.
Okay, so. I recently got an RCA to 3.5 Stereo cord that I'm using to get sound from my consoles onto my PC. Works fine. Except I can't find where to control the volume of this damn thing.
Well, that's a lie. I have to go into my Realtek Audio Manager in order to get Line In to respond to anything, as it is pretty loud at times. I'm trying to get it to show up on my volume mixer. I've been searching google and while there are solutions, none of them seem to work. I'm not sure if it's stereo mix I need to get onto the mixer or what, but it makes it a real pain during streaming when you have to open three or four windows to adjust volume for audio and mic.
What I have at the moment is a program called Power Mixer. It does exactly what I need (letting me control all volume levels), but it's a trial version. I'm hoping that if, for whatever reason, I can't get this to show up on my Windows 7 mixer that someone else knows of another program that can do what I'm needing.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Stereo Mixer is for the sound the computer itself makes.
If you change the Line In to default device in Sound>Recording Devices, you should be set to record what you need to without anything fancy. From there, go to that device's properties, and adjust the volume of it using the Levels tab.

Uhh, yeah. I am gonna restart, but how do I fix it if it shows up again ? Also, this is VISTA I'm talking about. X(
I got a startup problem that needs to be addressed. Just today I discovered that my computer didn't startup because I got an error saying that, "Lsass.exe is missing or unable to be loaded. Now, this has only happpened to me just npw but I want to know how I can fix this?
HP Vectra

Lsass.exe is a file used during when you log on. It verifies the validity of user logons to your PC or server.
It can be found the the C:\Windows\System32 folder.
I would recommend doing a virus/malware scan to make sure something isn't moving around files or deleting them. I would also suggest using a registry cleaner to hopefully prevent this type of problem from occuring again.
I resolved the Lsass.exe crisis and my files are pretty much intact, I just want to know what would be a good registry cleaner in case that happens again. Also, I want to know if I need to put in another partition like the Ubuntu or anyhting so that I can access my files just in case it happens? Should I really get a new partition or am I fine with just one?
I recommend CCleaner. It's completely free and works like a charm.
I have program called MP4Tool (or Surround MP4 Tool 3.1.0 if you heard of it) and it usually works when I need something done that until recently that I recevied error reports. I tried disabling the error reports but it still comes back, I like to believe that I have too many video conversion programs as well as their codecs installed and it is a conflict hence the "egencoder.dll has encountered a problem and needs to close" debacle. Is there anyway I can resolve this?
AppName: egencoder.dll

Ok so whenever my resolution changes due to say, opening an emulator, (like Gens) this happens to my screen.

I also cannot close anything, and [parasitic bomb] in general is just all [tornado fang]'d up on the screen. It forces me to hard reset my computer when it happens.
It is possible the video drivers don't support the resolution Gens puts out.

There's your problem right there. Get 7 or downgrade to XP. But in all seriousness, it's probably a fuckup in the registry, so a restore should fix it.
Does anyone know of any good avi conversion prgrams that work mp3s? I had one already but just recently it began to fail on me, I don't why that is but I do know it is time for it to go. I have a visual land mp3 player and I need programs other than the one I use to have that work just as well and doesn't mess up in the middle of the conversion.
EVer heard of Surround MP4 Tool from Evergreen? It use to work but now it doesn't do anything except complain about the egencoder.dll file failed.
Format Factory (http://www.formatoz.com/) works great for that. Gotten several videos to mp3 files (even avi)! Oh, and it's free too sooo...
I also need help with videos that I want to resize without losing any quality, I don't like widescreen videos but I cannot resize some videos into fullscreen. Are there programs for that? How I get rid of the widescreen off some videos?
I had done research on the internet and JQS is tied to Java but I wonder how I can remove the error? Is there any way that doesn't involve downloading a bamillion programs to remove it?

I am looking for something that will allow me to download youtube videos without worry about Waldemar or adware. Are they programs that will allow me to do that or which version Orbit Downloader is the safest?
http://youtubedownload.altervista.org/
I've used this one for a while and it hasn't let me down.
I use this one:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/video-downloadhelper/
Whenever it detects a video file playing, an icon will animate. Click the dropdown arrow next to it to see the available formats you can download. When you download the videos this way, it will download them in their original source format (the format it was originally uploaded by the author), without any unnecessary conversion or editing. Very handy when you want a video clip without degrading the quality even further than necessary. ^^;
I don't want to double post but now I have a new problem related to the bin, the other day I was uninstalling a program and clearing out the registry using C Cleaner when I found that now its asking me to delete 'WINDOWS'. How do I avoid this to in order stop any further complications?
While I was out, I accidentally dropped my music player on the floor. I picked up the player and everything seems fine save for the screen. I can still see most the commands and options but there is a black spot on the bottom right of the screen. Alrighty, I've got a problem with the Family Computer in my house, Turning it on today, I was greeted with a screen that said:
'Reboot and Select proper boot device
or insert boot media in selected drive and press a key'
The computer appears to be neglecting the presence of the OS as if it has been deleted. I would assume all we have to do is reinstall vista but I don't think we have a recovery disc.
Your hard drive could have died.
What I would try first is; open the case up, and take out the plugs from the hard drive. Make sure they're clean (blow them out) and reconnect the plugs. Then try booting up again.
If that doesn't work, the boot order may have changed. Go to the BIOS and make sure the hard drive(or other respective device) is chosen to be set 1st.
If that fails, there's a good chance your boot sector is corrupted. In this case your recovery disk would've helped. There may be a possibility that you can get one off the internet and burn it off another computer if you don't have one.

I actually did try that (1st device for boot was Floppy Disk for some unknown reason.) And all that did was make the computer freeze up when trying to access the HDD.
I am using Compaq Presario computer but it doesn't have a lot of memory and it will be awhile before I afford good memory. I tried all sorts of browsers such as:
Chrome - it works but only for high memory computers. This consumes a lot of memory and that is soemthing this PC does not have.
Firefox - for the same reason as above
MSN - My computer doesn't seem to like my MSN account, it slows down and most I get some error messages.
I heard some alternatve browsers like Flock, Rockmelt, Safari and Opera but I am not sure about either of them. I am using Netscape now but AOL no longer supports it and I am not what would happen if I keep it around. My dad doesn't rust IE for reason being that it may leave me open to viruses. I am not sure how much that is true but is there any other alternative browsers that doesn't use a lot of memory?
Also, is there any safer way to uninstall and reinstall MSN Explorer?
Opera is cool and fast. I use it all the time on the laptop at home. :3
Is there any freeware that allows me to export MSN favorites?
Okay guys I have a problem. Turning on my computer I received this message:
Run DLL
Error in C:\\Windows\System32\spool\DRIVERS\x64\3\LXCGtime.dll
Missing entry:_RunDLLEntry@16
I have no idea what it means, and it seems that perhaps another driver has been messing up as well. I havn't had a chance to write it down because my computer would shut itself off. I have a fan on it right now, because I'm worried that it's overheating (It is rather hot in my room right now.) So does anyone know what it means and how to fix it if possible? Or should I start looking into getting another CPU?
It's a printer problem. Get on in safe mode, then uninstall your printer software, and the printe rout of the devices/printers folder. Then reboot and see what you get.
PS: I hate Lexmark.
Hmmm I don't have the same problem with Lexmark but I can understand the drivers issues.
Yeah, that didn't work at all. I went into Safe Mode, and uninstalled it. My computer would run the proccesses and the screen refused to come up. Completley white but the mouse is apparent. Tried to go back into safe mode then it blue screened and shut off. -_-
Knowing my dumb self I probably uninstalled the wrong thing and screwed it up even further. Lovely.
If you did manage to uninstall the wrong thing, it could possibly show up as another error when you go into a normal boot.
You wouldn't happen to have the OS installation disc, would you?
I probably do, although the computer came with the OS already placed on it. When I get back home from work I'll have to hunt it down. Dad's gonna try to help me boot it up again, if not, we may have to take it to a proffesional and I can onyl pray they can fix the porblem without me losing all my data.
Did you get it fixed? If not, what manufacturer makes it? You may be able to access a part of the hard drive that has the installation backup and just repair your OS. The function key you have to press to access it is different for each manufacturer.
I need some help with my MSN Explorer install, not to long I uninstalled MSN explorer to make more space for alternative browsers but I realized that most of the browsers I have are essentially the same. I wanted to reinstall MSN Explorer but as you can see from this picture:

EDIT: updated driver. did nothing.
EDIT 2: Remounted the card. nothing.I think my GFX card may be bad. thing is, It doesnt affect my gameplay performance. it doesnt show up when I play. mostly when im on the desktop or doing other things that the pixel snow happens.
I do get random spikes in the GPU load while online, about 24%, though I cannot remember if that happens normally when im on the internet or not because I never checked.
I am want to try to get videos to my PSP but I have a hard time trying to do that. I want to transfer videos and I have Format Factory and Any Video Converter somewhere but I don't what settings to use or even how to get the PSP to recognize the videos.
Make a folder named "Video" in your PSP folder and put them in there. I think the PSP will play MPEG-4's and AVI's.
Okay here´s a puzzle for you.
I first had a pc my brother let me use and a hard drive.
I then got a new graphic card for it. Then a new motherboard and CPU.
Atm , all of the stuffon it is mine.
It´s got a Nvidia Geforce GTX 560 Ti Graphic card.
A WDC WD1001FALS-00JTBO Ata Device Hard drive
Intel(R) Core (TM) i5-3450 CPU @ 3.10 GHZ (shows 4 in Device Manager.)
It runs Windows 8 x64 bit
Its got 8 GB of Ram.
Now here´s the trouble . Anytime i run any game that requires DX11 , it crashes after 5-15mins.
Ive checked the Event Viewer, but i can´t seem to find the answer there.
Running Ps2 or Wii Emulator at max? No Problem!
Try run Hitman Absolution on it? Pft! Nope! Crash!
Some games will actually run fine. Like Sonic Generations or World of Warcraft on DX11.
It´s not that there is any red lines or graphic glitches when it crashes, it just still freezes and the audio goes one tone high. Sometimes it will correct it self, but then the audio vanishes.
Now i did try run Realtek audio drivers, but once again, crashes.
Even with a clean new Windows 8 installation and updates to the Nvidia card? Crash!
Well, okay not crash, more like freeze.
The room im in isn´t very hot, and the fans on the PC are fine, they spin spin spin spin.
Sounds like you don't have enough power.
The 560Ti requires 500W minimum for the whole system, so you should have a 600W or 700W at most supply, to be safe.
I have a...uh...CORSAIR Builder Series CX500 500W ATX12V v2.3 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC Power Supply
At 500W, you're stressing your system for power when the GTX gets going. You seriously need a little more power to spare.
Maybe this will help any?

I put in a extra fan blowing at the graphic card, and lo and behold, it lasted 2 hours and 30mins before it crashed holding temp at 40c
Maybe it´s a overheating issue?
Atm , im playing Tomb Raider, and it has PC issues atm with Nvidia. So, can not confirm until next drivers are out.
Is there any method that I can use to connect my PSP to my WPA2 connection?
I have a print spooler problem.
I have not touched my printer in a while, and I recently got myself a new ink cart, some paper, and tried to print something, only for nothing to happen. I tried bugfixing, but it didnt find anything. So i tried reinstalling the drivers, and there, I encountered a print Spooler Error 1053 that I've no clue what to do about.
Anyone?
Seems like a common problem possibly caused by a recent windows update, that people aren't exactly sure how to fix it.

Fun one I have. Friend just gave me a dell tower but missing ram hard drive and clock battery lol. uh were my money tree when i need it.
That's considered a necropost, but since you posted some relavant information... *Sigh* I'm not a mod. I shouldn't care.
Anyways, RAM is dirt cheap. Check Amazon. A little 100GB hard drive is dirt cheap. Check Amazon. A clock battery is also also dirt cheap. Check Walgreens.
One problem though. Without the hard drive that the OS is installed on, you can't use the computer. And an OS, unfortunately, is not dirt cheap. Unless you pirate it, which is dirt free.
Necroposts, so long as they contain relevant information, are fine. Just do be mindful of the date of the last reply in the future.
As for your computer conundrum... Do you have a working computer now? Keep that Dell tower for parts. You may be able to gut it at a later date and build a better computer, using the tower itself as a housing.

This is a stickied topic though, I thought Necroposting rules didn't apply to them?
They generally don't apply to stickied topics.
Right, that's what I thought.
Anyway, less of a computer problem and more of a computer program problem here.
So I've been having issues with Firefox lately, which is why I switched to Chrome a while back. Basically, the problem is there is something that is breaking scripts in web pages.
For example, the formatting buttons on another forum I use are completely broken, they don't do anything. Chrome they work fine, and on here they work fine on Firefox, the other message board uses the same engine as this so I don't understand why the buttons aren't working.
Another problem is with certain buttons on sites like Wikipedia and some other sites, instead of doing whatever it is they're supposed to do, they instead toss me to the top of the page and add a # to the end of the address. I'm trying to see if disabling any of my add-ons will fix this but I'm doubtful it will.
Nevermind! Found out it was a bug with one of my addons! [tornado fang]ing foxreplace murders any javascript in the page when it replaces stuff for some odd reason.
I have an issue.
recently, when i use Microsoft word, when I reach a new page, the bar moves to the center or near-bottom of the new page, leaving a ton of blank space.
this happens even if there's text there. so if I move the text to a new page, it goes to the bottom or middle. And yet the margins are all right, the first page doesnt have this problem. the [tornado fang] is causing this?
Open the Page Setup dialogue box. Click the Layout tab. In the Vertical Alignment dropdown menu, make sure it says "top." Once you have your settings the way you want them, check the "Default" box and close.
That's the solution I found on Google, and it apparently worked for the person who had the same problem.
- Does anyone know of a quicker way to resize MP4 files?
- Also, what kind of hardware do I need to run the latest windows?
Windows 8 is actually less intensive than other versions. It's been highly optimized, as they were targetting going on lower end devices (ie. tablets). You won't need anything high powered. However for driver support it should still be new (within 3 years best bet) parts.
My laptop is about 5 years old, and while high powered for what it is, cannot use Windows 8 due to no driver support from HP (or ATI which surprised me) for that model.
If you have a preconfigured machine that you want to upgrade (HP, DELL, etc) check their website's drivers section for Windows 8 on your model to confirm they support it.
The only compatibility issue 8 seems to have is that's it's very picky about resolutions. when I installed it on my lil Acer i had to manually edit some registry files to 'trick' it into a larger resolution so the apps would work. As long as your device has decent RAM and a large native resolution it should be fine. The apps are kind of clunky if you don't have a great processor though. At least in my experience.
Can anyone help me with this "Setup_Pain2.exe"? It is causing me problems because now I cannot access my portables unless I use something like Winrar or some other program. Is this a virus or not?

My Google-fu failed me as I got your topic on AnimeSuki.
Sorry Iw as looking for help al over the place. Can you help me get rid of this thing?
I honestly have no idea what it is. Best advice i can give is to search for it on Google.
Or... back up what you can and do a system restore.
I think I discovered the problem: Have you ever heard of the Shortcut Virus? I think that is why I cannot see my files or access them. I removed them but not I have to make sure that it stays clean.
I'll be doing research on that virus now. Make sure your antivirus is up to date.
My mother cannot access her MSN email account and while the reasonable thing to do would to do would be to reset the password, we cannot do so because we recently changed the phone number and the code can only go to the phone number in that account. I cannot the phone number unless we can actually go to the account and going to the alternate email account didn't work either. What can I do? I cannot help with recovering the password unless I get that code and I cannot use the usual methods. I don't want to do any hacking or anything but what shouold I do? Should I call Mircosoft? We got our accounts for free since my old man was a former Microsoft employee
There's no option to send the password request to an alternate e-mail?
If there isn't, you'll have to call Microsoft.

We tried that but we used up our chances and we didn't get any information.
I do know that the password is on her cell phone and the cell phone can somehow receive the emails.
