A new Fangame !? Hell yessh...
I'm currently making a megaman game using N64mario's. I am no where near to playable state. But I'm still learning it.
So, I though that I could get more motivation from opening a topic about it.
Even though there is no official story yet. I'm happy to tell you that engine is going well right now.

Even though I'm doing the game, I will only post tiles, sprite sheets and mockups for now. Because I dont want to hype people. I will not post any critical game screenshot until I have something good enough to show.

Megafan game should just be Titled "Megaman" and have some subtitle underneath it like the japanese versions had...

I like that tile-set.
This is why I prefer to keep the engine source closed until it's finished. The engine still lacks tons of features I have to add into it.
If ppl start making mm games from my engine now, they wouldn't have much to choose from, with the lacking features. I still have to add in moving platforms, conveyor belts, slippery floors (I have made a code for the ice floors in one of my small examples, but it's still not accurate IMO) and even a pause menu needs to be made for my engine to be complete. X_X

Wait, could explain just a bit? I was working on a fan game some years back on Game Maker (like v6 or v7), but I sucked at the programming needed, so i couldn't finish it in the slightest.
I'm assuming you mean an engine that N-Mario made (due to his comment), and I was wondering just what is possible. I just need to make it so that enemies shoot at you, you jump correctly, and all of the ut-most basic moves (I don't think I'd need sliding).

Yea, I actually want to do sprites and backgrounds first. And start making the actual game after the engine is complete. I tried everything but megaman dont teleport in to the coordinates I gave on the map. So, I am just wandering around with what I can do right now. Everything related to the game will be posted here though.
Hey Speed, once you get the hang of the engine and it's fully completed, you mind helping me out with my fan game? I've got everything done on paper, from abilities, to bosses, to enemies. I figured I'd start out just recycling everything, using the original stages for each boss and having their powers be effectively the same when fighting them, the major difference is when you get a hold of them.
I will think about it once I'm done with my mine. But wait are you Sniper X, or is it just my imagination.

Yep, both enemies are close to their ZX:A counterparts. But you can do better BGs, just try to do it yourself and not use official ones. Still takes too much time though.

May I make a suggestion?
In the Rockman 7 FC version, Rockman's weapon change doesn't use pallete swapping. Instead, Rockman's sprite sheet is copied, and given different colors. You could change what Rockman looks like when he changes weapons with this, which is impossible if you're hacking a game.
Gaia: Oh come slow. I stopped programming for the engine because I dont have enough meterial and information to do it. I will start doing the actual game when N64mario finishes the engine. This thread is only for meterial and sprite progress showcase for now. So, I'm just waiting for N64mario to start it. And he is right. Engine still needs aLOT work before it becomes open source. The videos you guys watched are only finished stuff and well played. So, you cant see glitches or other things in the videos.
Rock Bomb: Well, MMF2 already have pallete change feature. There's no need to use sprite changing. It is not necessary to have same pallete between weapons and sprites because they are different objects. I can make blue/red and have the weapon black/white. It doesnt really matter.

Well, you could try programming fortress bosses using regular boss data, at least that's how I think capcom made their fortress bosses, Black Devil in X5 is basically recycled data of the YD with extra bits of data.
I guess, well, I mean, he could've kicked it old school and use six masters instead of eight.. or four in the MM7 style.

Wouldn't programming fortress bosses be just the same as programming minibosses, and robot masters? The difference being you don't gain weapons from them, and they explode differently (much like how my powmettaur miniboss explodes).
Have any particular request for a fortress boss example? I was thinking of just a Dr. Wily fight alone. Maybe couple of forms or something i donno.
I suppose I could try the yellow devil, but that would require multiple 16x16 active objects to make it look right. Although MMF2 has a paste backdrop feature to cut out parts of yellow devil. But still I donno.

Ya know.... it's be interesting to try and code wind blowers. Although I can only think of one or few megaman games that have this feature. I believe MM6 was one of them, if memory serves. :)

and Wasn't MM2 the only game that featured the death laser areas in the classic series? Because I had some interest in coding those, but i donno if it would be something i would want to keep in as a feature an an engine.
MM2, EXE Transmission, I think Megaman X (Sigma's variant), MMZ (Weil's variant) and MM9 and I think that's it for the death lasers. The Wind variable comes in two directions, but appeared more games than the death lasers (that infinite health seems to be disabled, tried it). But I guess the wind variable is more common in the games than laser deathtraps.

In MM9, they weren't really 'invincible lasers'. They were more like Lava Flows in which you can freeze with concrete. Also, they weren't permanent backdrops either. So I would consider them as lava areas.
Well, there is one more game with death "lasers".
In MM7, Turbo Man's stage, the vertical falling part just before landing on the Sisi.
Those flamethrowers were invincible, iirc.
(I'm not talking about the flamethrowers BEFORE this vertical drop, now those can be frozen with Freeze Cracker.)

Becareful Megaman, you have to be fast it looks like it is explosive. (It is indeed a moving platform but a one that swims on lava. It will start moving once it is touched. But nothing good happens if it hits a wall *BOOM*)

But more or less of a teaser, and mock up shots. I can't really say that as much of a fan game in progress, but more like fan artwork, under graphic arts area.
I'd imagine one would need in game demos of a fan game before it could be considered as a fan game project. But just my theory. X_X

If a game has a working title screen, stage select (MM Powered Down) or at least a level, I count it as a Fan Project or ROM Hack. ^^;

I am not at home and cant draw sprites without a mouse (using a laptop's damn touchpad). I may come tomorrow and draw some sprites for the game but I'll also go to my 3rd holiday trip next weekend. <.< And stay there for about 1 week. But hey I have been on holidays non-stop for about 3 weeks.

While 256x240 stands true for old NES games, I doubt this is still true for Mega Man 9. Last I checked my videos, the scroll transitions seemed to equal exactly 256x224, no missing pixels from the stages. Though I can check again if you want me to, but with today's technology, it would seem that Capcom might have went with 256x224 for Mega Man 9. At least for the Wiiware version. Not sure if this still stands true for the XBox or PSN versions.
I go to Marmaris tomorrow so except 1 more update after that (I'll post saying that "I cant do it" if I wont have time tomorrow)

Doing the programming first means that you will have to replace all graphics in the future. Which takes more time than making the game itself.

Whichever you prefer... the Japanese classic titles most of the time stick with japanese subtitles, but this is your call.
But I was talking about the overall katakana posted here more than just the pixel art title.
"Ridemipishun" isn't an appropriate spelling in katakana for "Redemption". "Ridemipishun" gives you "Ree-de-mee-pi-shoom". The way the japanese spell things out, to better mirror (or attempt) "ri-demp-shuhn" would be something along the lines of RI-DE-N-PU-SHI-O-N or even RI-DE-N-PU-SHI-YA-N.

A lot of the code may be redeisnged in the new engine. Even the room/screen scrolling transitions have a redesign. But I suppose old code could still work in the new one. I even tried to redesign the camera scrolling on the player to get as close as how it worked in the nes games.
I'll eventually get around to shooting and adding enemies and stuff eventually in the new engine. ;)
I modified your old engine before. I wanted to make silly things. I tried to make things like "Ultra Buster" where it shoots Over 9000 charged shots at once. Which made the FPS go down to 3-4. I also made moon jump or spike enemies where they bump into you lol.
But I also created lots of new bugs. So, I will wait for you newer engine and work on it in a serious way.
Well..... The old engine lacks use of floats and uses a few parts of MMF2's internal movement engines such as bouncing movement, etc. It also lacks fast loops where needed, too many over-redundant events & lack of 'OR' conditions.
My new engine will most likely be ALL static movement, uses floats and 'OR' conditionss. Whether it seems more polished or not, I donno if that will help on your side or not.
I like all static movement IMO, because I have more freedom to do whatever I want with the objects, and include temporary pauses where I want to. ;)

I tried to make Wind Blowers before with old engine too. But I guess I can make it with new one since that it looks like it have more realistic gravity.
Yes. I found out that fast loops can't be called 1.23 times. Only 1 times out of the 1.23 times. This is where the un-realistic gravity happens.
So what I did was, while I maintained the WHOLE numbers in fast loops, I moved any of the numbers as floats into their own event.
I have a very short example of this in my files. It's no much, but it shows how I used fast loops & floats together.
In other words, say we have a velocity of 1.23.
Use 1 for the fast loop part, while .23 remains as a float, a section of its own events.
Since floats are smaller than whole numbers, we don't need to fast loop floats anyway. We'll just use fast loops for all whole numbers accordingly. Which is how I did the slippery ice floors, separate the whole numbers & floats from the given number provided.
That's about how I did my new engine. @_@
EDIT: Here's a bit more of debug information for ya.
A lot of this info is used for screen transitions (math involved), scrolling and what not.

Seriously, though, this game looks like it's slowly coming along, and quite nicely at that! It has some original-looking bosses in it, and I like that it's keeping to the 8-bit formula, while adding some new stuff to the mix.

Can't say I'm too surprised, honestly. Shark Man is a boss people have liked to use in various fan-projects (though none have used them too well, honestly), and I'll be interested to see how you use it here. I'm still working on my remake of the DOS Mega Man games (albeit slowly), but I'm going to keep Shark Man as close to the original DOS code as possible when I get to him, but I'll just kick him up a notch and make him actually 8-bit.
Pulse Woman will be interesting, though, and it'd be neat if you made her have some sort of cameo'd relation to Pulseman (maybe a power or two that he uses in his game).

Shark Man stage is planned to be the shortest stag in the game.
Stage is empty so even longs stages would feel short. There will be enemies, different water physics and such that will make it harder.
And such. So, yeah.
Just did a quick run test. Stage layout seems pretty good. :)
A thing I noticed was this. You can still make the camera scroll left/right with mega man at the room/screen before the boss fight room. Probably forgot a no scrolling detector there or something. ;)

Just did a quick run test. Stage layout seems pretty good. :)
A thing I noticed was this. You can still make the camera scroll left/right with mega man at the room/screen before the boss fight room. Probably forgot a no scrolling detector there or something. ;)

I can't remember if you wanted this feature or not, but did you mention to me that some of your stages were going to have slopes in them? I managed to get normal slopes working where you can actually walk up & down slopes. Took a little bit of work to do. Although I'm not sure how totally satisfied I am with them. X_X

Leachman is an no-element boss. Both Winter and Summer Paths have many no-element enemies. Its just few enemies and other objects that change the appearance of the stage.

The level doesn´t need to be based on the boss....look at CrashMan, BombMan, CutMan, TopMan, HardMan etc...

True, and I suppose some levels end up just having an interesting theme not really associated with the boss because some bosses are hard to come up with a stage theme for.
BTW Speedy, i posted on my thread, but, it could be a good idea to add custom physics for the slopes
N-Mario could add it for the main engine as an option, since it only will work at slope plattaforms
but, well, is just a suggestion :-[

Well, a fancharacter (obviously...) I dont want to reveal his story right away. It will be explained slowly during the game (like MM9's After Boss Cutscene's). He is creator of MXN series' robots, he is neither a robot or a human and thats all I can say for now.

However, about Shark Man's design, well...He looks more like he should be called "Eel Man" than "Shark Man". The name change would be beneficial, though, considering that there's a remake of the DOS MM games (which also has a Shark Man -AC) being developped.
By the way, that mock-up of Pulse Woman looks decent. I must ask though, will her legs get redesigned to be a little...wider? [eyebrow] It'd be easier to tell that she's a female robot master, that way.

It turns out that rock sprite is from Wily 1 of MM3 :P. Btw I changed the game to MM5 since MM6 is just coded so hard that level hacking is nearly impossible (you cant change scrolling :|). So, I will use MM4-MM5. I will start tomorrow. Since its night here :p. So, night every1.

lol I need a scanner for that and start practicing drawing since I dropped drawing like 5 years ago. I was caricaturist before and I had talent. I also had talent for drawing too but I dropped that. I kinda lost my skills. and dont have enough equipment to back me up.

I cant do too much these days because I am sick. I have too many sicknesses and problems thanks to my parent's not-really-healthy bodies. So, I cant rly do too much till I get alot healthy. But that doesnt mean I will stop. I am currently spriting too. Just not too much. Like an hour a day.

That said, now that you're using NES color limits, it would be better if the fortress bosses are under NES limits. It's more authentic that way, you know? '>.> Just take the NES limits and take full advantage of them! I know that you can do it!

Flame Plants are dangerous. They spew out really hot stuff. And it is unpredictable because theres no pattern for it. Pretty much random. Also they spew out few more 'last chance' flames when they explode.
I will try to keep that in mind, rather.

That last screenshot for the level is much better. The one before it, with that shade of blue made it far too bright and with the grid repitition it could very easily mess with someone's eyes. (But then again, my eyes aren't the greatest in the first place, *pokes her glasses* )

This one surely looks better, but you're best off using the zig zag effect in the middle to create a more elaborate pattern, as well as using it at the top and bottom to break up the squareness of the whole shape. Remember, at some point the stage itself will have raised floors and even move vertically; you'd need to move the pattern accordingly.

Old one is on the left, new one is on the right.
A stage in NES Megaman could only have 4 BG palettes and 4 colors. max for each palette.
Left one has more than 4. While right one just have 4 and can be inserted into a NES game without a problem.
Not only that. Old ones used a non-NES palette. Mine uses the NES palette that emulators use.
Same for that sand tiles too.

It seem like the pillars attaching to the ground are a bit too high up; there's a lot of black in between them and the floor. Not to mention, the green shading on the ceiling is reversed; it looks like a floor...
Also, a big issue with this background thus far is that it's always a big wall behind the player. As you'd through the stage, you'd need to break away from this, so build in a few ways for the wall to transition into new types of background. Likewise, make some floor tiles that allow different heights.

and yes if two trucks hit each other they explode. They will also fall down.
If any truck is coming at you or blocking the road you just need to shoot it.

Dr.Mxues doesnt even care about Mega Man lol. Plot-wise if Mxues was interested in killing Mega Man. He could easily kill him.

Loving the Ice-Glass tiles you have for the floor there. The flashing is a nice touch as well :D
There will be platforms that will become invisible during the black-out :P. You will be able to touch them in dark. Just cant see them.

Dont think that speed of the animation will be same in the game. Stage will be mostly dark. It will stand light for like 2 seconds then will be dark for 7-8 seconds.
You might want to redo the bottom left one, without relying too much on my obviously rushed example.

I must say, that the title is something new and it looks really interesting.
I have mixed feelings about the look of the english title. On one side it looks sort of dull having "Megaman" in normal letters. But on other side it looks new and original.
The name is familiar. Ridiculously stupid, too.
But that's just my opinion, you don't listen to it anyway.

Please I know what you mean? If you're going to connect it to Fate Stay/Night please dont. I was originally going to use Hollow Destiny but it felt so long that fate was better. Plus it is not like FSN have copyrights to that word, right?
Oh and no I wont change the english title, I didnt want to use japanese-style one so I made my own. While japanese one keeps the original style.

There's no transition at this point but I woud love to do it sometime.
I think that basic idea works nicely, since it fits with it feeling like an artificial environment created by technology. As an extension of that, It'd probably work to have the occasional technological background detail in the sand itself.

I tried my best to stay in limits. Stage currently uses around 11 colors. Add 2 extra colors for possible Weapon color schemes. So, with the colors I am going to give to enemies, it is 15 colors at total. And there are even more BGs for Fierceman's stage.
Well, it's mainly active when you post something new...-_-
That said, the underwater background does look nice, and has exquisite details. Also, yes it is relaxing (a bit too much for Mega Man, though 8D).

sweet designs, NB, although I have 2 complains:
The first Robot (Skate Man) seems to have way too big wheels which makes his standing pose look kind of awkward. it's not bad spriting here, but rather a minor design flaw ; ) I also have a hard time to see the distinct colors of him because I am partially colorblind. Those 2 shades of red and green do not match to another, in my opinion.
The helmet looks much better, it reminds me of Proto man's and Turbo man's, but that's totally OK since it doesn't look copied at all.
As for shark man, while his color scheme might be unique, I'd rather prefer a more traditional Shark man. The armor on the other hand is very cool, although the helmet and that back fin make him look a bit like Sonic-the-sand-color'd-hedgehog man.
I like the gun design. Have you tried to attach the little fin on top of it to underline the skark resemblance even more? That said, awesome interpretation of Shark Man!
The Eye Man (Ocular man? ) defenitly looks great. Only minor flaw i see is the right shoulder pad. it just doesn't look that well attached to the main body. The rest however is totally wicked! :D

I cannot see red and green next to each other as well, it's not as rare as you might think, especially considering that this kind of color blindness gets passed on to your child. Interestingly though, the kind of "red-green-weakness" I have just effects the male bearer of the gen, not a female, although the females still can pass it on to their children. It's kind of weird X)
For me the red and green just looks rather unpleasant, it's hard to describe ^_^
As for fierce man, you have to admit that he reminds one slightly of aforementioned hedgehog ;)
Sorry for mistaking your Lunar Man with an eye themed robot ^_^ He does look cool, but that one arm seems just a tad too fragile in my opinion ^_^

I think the highlights on the dunes are inconsistent. The foremost ones should be highlighted, getting darker near the back. Furthermore, I think you have the colors to make some sort of horizon and sky.
Whole scenery except platforms and pipes were made in just an hour so lol. I will improve it.

Thankies, I was keeping this a secret but then decided to show it.
I replaced him with Pyro Man cause there's too much fire bosses around and there's not too much sound based Robot Masters around.
Plus, his concept is much more fun.
As you can see, his stage is based on concert arenas and backstages.
Can´t you break the tendency and make more than 8 RM? Dunno, it´s a shame to drop off such cool designs like those.
Anyway, I really like that RM and the stage. Can´t wait to see the rest of the gang.

Dont think that speed of the animation will be same in the game. Stage will be mostly dark. It will stand light for like 2 seconds then will be dark for 7-8 seconds.
