Shantae & Shovel Knight would make me very happy! My guess is that he might put Wolf back into the game as well, especially after seeing Lucas.

I don't play the Star Fox characters often, but even I miss Wolf a little. I definitely found him preferable to Falco.

Shantae for Smash would be pretty awesome. Of course, my first and foremost hope is still Daisy.

Aside from characters, I'd also like to see a Volnutt Mii Fighter costume, and FRIKKIN N64 METAL MARIO STAGE. So here's hoping

Shantae and Shovel Knight aside I'd really like to see Sora from KH. I realize its probably never going to happen, but still. Goku would be great too but by the rule of "has to have originated as a VG character" he is disqualified... I mean, Ryu got in and I never thought I'd see that in my lifetime. So that took a huge spot off my picks for Smash inclusions.

Snake is almost a sure in if Konami lets it. They scraped the barrel for the Brawl lineup because they were reusing assets and code like no tomorrow for Smash4.

Eh I would say a Square representative is unlikely but then again we have freaking Shulk. Even then on the Square front of characters that would never make it in I'd pick Zidane myself, but again it would never happen since 9 hasn't even been remade yet.

Square reps from later games are unlikely, but FF did start out on Nintendo systems IIRC, so it's not impossible.

I'd totally be down to see Lightning in Smash.

If they, by some slight possibility, bring Sora into Smash, he'd have to be nerfed to all hell.

That's assuming they use KH2 Sora, anyway. KH Sora should be fine to have him as is.

Wolf is practically a given since Star Fox Zero is due Holiday 2015 and he can easily be ported from Brawl. It's not a coincidence the Falco amiibo is the last non-DLC character to be released.

In terms of the ballot, I personally doubt Nintendo is going to add a 3rd party character. All the 3rd party characters included thus far are extremely iconic (so iconic that even your nongamer friends can probably name them, or at least recognize them). Shantae and Shovel Knight are nowhere near their popularity and legacy, despite the vocal minority you often see on forums. Banjo Kazooie is Microsoft. Final Fantasy is primarily a non-Nintendo series now, and unlike Ryu, constantly changes its universes and characters (so unless you want Warrior of Light, Cecil, or Terra, FF is probably out of the question). Sora, also primarily non-Nintendo, gets tricky because he has strong associations with Disney and therefore doesn't really work well aesthetically as a standalone character. If Snake gets in, I doubt he'd be considered the ballot character just because a returning veteran would be underwhelming for everyone who didn't vote for him (and would kind of defeat the purpose of the ballot).

In terms of 1st/2nd party inclusions, I actually don't know, because I feel like everyone that should be in Smash 4 (aside from Wolf) is already in. Off the top of my head, the biggest contenders are King K Rool, Isaac from Golden Sun, and Splatoon inklings. King K Rool hasn't been that relevant since DK64, and Golden Sun has a lot of reasons going against it (only popular in West, Dark Dawn was poorly received, another anime swordfighter, etc).

So my prediction? Splatoon inkling.

In regards to Shantae, Shovel Knight, and Banjo, their owners are all open to the idea of them getting in Smash, so at least there's that. Still hoping for Snake (maybe wait for some ballot winners to be announced first, then roll out him and Wolf).

As for Golden Sun--if "another anime swordsman" isn't a viable option, I'd try going with Mia; with Ice Climbers and Squirtle gone, I don't think anyone else primarily uses ice/water (aside from Lucas and his PK Freeze).

Y'know, I'm honestly not sure I want Wolf back at all. I wasn't particularly hyped for Lucas when we already had Ness, and while I'm fine with clones to a point, bringing Wolf back means we have ANOTHER three characters with similar playstyles (Marth/Lucina/Roy and Mario/Dr. Mario/Luigi-kinda being the others....). Plus, I think Wolf as a character is kinda boring.....

If there's anybody I'd want...hmm....I'd like Namco and Sega to get another rep each to balance the fact that Capcom has two (especially since one of them is [tornado-fang]ing RYU). Sega's definitely be Vyse (I voted for him in the ballot, after all.), but I'll admit I'm drawing a blank on Namco's.

On Nintendo's side, K. Rool is one I'd like, Ridley's never gonna happen, Fire Emblem's got enough reps.....Maybe Pulseman? If GameFreak still has the rights to him, it could happen. Failing that, maybe something from Fossil Fighters.....hell, if they got Villager to work, perhaps Mallo from Pullbox could work too?
