It's simple,really. Popularity = Most people like it = Good quality work.  For example, let's look at Micheal Jackson. Everyone knows him, and his songs were really good. Infact, his "Thriller" album was, and still is, the highest selling album.

Now, you are right. Not everything Mainstream cranks out is good, and not everyone likes everything mainstream puts out. Does everyone like Micheal Jackson's songs? I don't think so.

But like I said, just because you don't like it means it's garbage. If you don't like Mortal Kombat, that's fine, but I do.

I'm curious as to how 9/10 times something mainstream is a complete fail. I guess it could be since you probably do not like everything mainstream puts out.

But the thing is that Japanese games tend to be more respect and known than games from the west of the world. Every knows Mario and Sonic, Hell, everyone knows Capcom Konami Namco. Does anyone know or care who Midway is?

I want to narrow it down to video game catergories, but I need some good thought on this. I mean Other than FPS, what catergories is Nippon NOT known for?

Midway is hardly an equivalent. Try Valve, or Blizzard.
In fact I would be amazed if more people know of Capcom etc than Blizzard or Valve, what with WoW and Steam.

Geekgo.  Please, please, please play Planescape Torment.  It's not very well known (in a mainstream sense, otherwise, it's well loved, aw [tornado fang] it.  It's loved.), but that is a VERY good game.

What RPGs give you a floating skull that wants to get laid as a first member to be in your party?

Hell, what RPG's give you the option to TALK the final boss to death?

Look, it's clear that you're biased here, considering the whole "Nippon" thing. But seriously, expand your horizons a bit. As others have mentioned, take a look at Blizzard and Valve. Other you might want to check out are Bioware and Bethesda too. That's not even bringing up EA or Activision, which people are clearly quite aware of even if you don't like the main genre they focus on.

Honestly, I can tell this is pointless. I felt like I should put that out there in the off-chance it actually does something, but I'm not getting my hopes up.
