Do you guys think they should make the next X game 3D?  Or has X7 soured you all on that idea.

A 3D Megaman game could actually be awesome if they do it right.  Legends pretty much proved that.  Maybe a third-person shooter?

No, not a shooter of any kind. Mega Man might indeed have action and shooting parts, but at least 50% of the gameplay is platforming. Which is very hard, near impossible to implement into a 3PS or a FPS.

Legends I admit, did it right. But it's also a series of its own. Giving X or ZX the same treatment would make it... Legends with different skins.

Keep the gameplay 2D. That is all. Everything else is eyecandy.

I never said the 3D parts were bad.  People hate X7.  We do not need another shoddy, hastlily made game with few extras or replay value.

There are already loads of shooters out there if I want to play them. No need to go turning X into another one.

X7 may not have been prime material, but that had nothing to do with it being 3D.  Hell, if anything, most of the 3D segments were better constructed than the 2D segments.  I've often said it was the merger that shot Capcom in the foot in that game, as mechanics designed for one "dimension" often don't translate well into the other.

I like the idea of a 3D X, but I like my sidescrolling too.  So that's a damn hard question.

I believe they mean 3D gameplay, not 3D visuals.

Honestly, if you wanted to make a 3D Mega Man X game, do the company and your fans a favor and make an Action RPG out of Command Mission.

It'll alleviate the platforming frustrations since your team is mainly focused on developing a closed-bottom RPG world and introduce movement strategies including location and terrain to boss battles, and the fans will appreciate the lack of random battles and the re-addition of the combat mobility that makes X and co. so powerful (i.e. avoiding attacks and accessing the Charge Shot a heck of a lot sooner). There would also be the ever-important replay value if there were 2 difficulty modes OR a New Game + where you can play through the whole game as a different character (wouldn't even have to change the story, provided they're present at the beginning). One playthrough of the RPG, you might be X. Next time, Zero. The next, Axl. Fits right in with MMX:CM1's ending.

Now you might be thinking, "Wait, wait, wait, Super Paper Mario and Sonic Chronicles underperformed, and you're suggesting this?" Yes, because for every bad Action RPG there is out there, there are as many good ones (Tales of ____, Kingdom Hearts, etc). The idea is to keep the game simple (and I would DEFINITELY recommend a KH1-esque Lock-On), but give it the addictive brevity of a platformer.

So if they made a Mega Man X game with 3d gameplay and platforming elements, you guys would enjoy it?

It's possible; Metroid Prime did it extraordinarily well.  Kingdom Hearts had some elements of it too.  The lockon feature from X7 would work too.

I thought the lock on feature was annoying for most people... /:

based on that alone, no. a 3D platformer isn't good because it's a 3D platformer. it would all depend on how well it plays.

for every Mario 64, there's a couple crappy movie tie ins.

the only thing X7 needed was more useful transformations for Minami Takayama
everything else was perfect.

and the ability to NOT instantly transform would have been nice. And I don't recall being able to cancel the transformation either.
personally, I think It could have used a little more in the stage department. the were too linear. even the 3D sections. ESPECIALLY the 3D sections. plus a better Armor for the Wimp. the Glide armor was useless. the Glide was pretty lame. even X4's hover was more useful than that.

I mean, I liked X7. but It was lacking... I can say that otherwise, the characters worked well though. Zero especially.

Did you ever try to dash jump from walls?....

Also, what Axl's transformations need is the ability to store and replenish them with special weapons energy.

The fact that it's horribly broken is not a problem? You kick away from the wall, have no momentum and drop to your doom. You simply can't scale a wall that way.

But that still means the game is horribly broken. Such mechanics are the norm for an X game to be an X game, it's inexcusable to mess up such a well established mechanic.

as a speedrunner, i've been trained to dash wall jump whenever possible. but i'm positive there are plenty of people out there who have never dash wall jumped in their gaming life.
