Actually, in both cases, it's more Zero saving their ass that leads to that. Coincidentally the same applies to Zero's red-haired Resistance affair. In Iris's case, being Zero's navigator was kind of a retroactive thing. While she was support for the Hunters all along, there's not much indication of her working specifically with Zero in X4.
