Oh dear I hope I don't have to edit my part.

Oddly enough, this all stemmed from when I showed him that pic of Mewtwo playing chess against GLaDOS.  He said he would have preferred if Chell spoke in Portal 2.
He can't appreciate GLaDOS and Wheatley enough?  Or the Space Core?

Earlier today, I had commented on how I really like the articulated figma stands, and then my friend mentioned how very easily I could turn Darth Mewtwo into a viable SW fan character, and we started running through possible species (albino Squib was an option), and then in the same breath, he implied how he doesn't think adults should like Pokemon.

Hypocrisy, much?

When friends make me sad, it... well... makes me sad. :\

The thing is, if he ever wants to get into making game mods, he should learn the history behind the technology, explore older games that were considered innovative during their time due to their technological advances, and realize the amount of work that goes into making a great game.

Our latest argument was about the silent protagonist.  He'd rather his player character speak.  I'd rather not.  He says that a silent protagonist impedes good storytelling.  I say that it's a challenge to overcome.  Obviously, those old retro games with the great stories and silent protagonists don't mean a thing compared to his beloved Far Cry.
Sucks for him. BioShock 1, a game from 2007, has a protagonist that only had one spoken line the entire game -- the introduction scene right before the plane crashes in the middle of the Atlanic Ocean near Rapture. The rest of the game, Jack is completely mute (aside from some pain grunts). BioShock Infinite's protagonist, Booker DeWitt, broke the silent (and faceless) protagonist trend of the previous two games. I'm willing to bet he doesn't know or acknowledges that before BioShock, there was System Shock, series' spiritual ancestor that started out as a cyberpunk FPS-RPG horror game with Doom-like graphics. Don't get me wrong about BioShock Infinite though, I so freaking want to buy this game from all the praises I've been hearing about.

If I could get away with it, I'd smash his PS3 (and maybe his computer if it's a high-end rig and set him up with a weak Windows XP rig) and make him play some classic games. I got Genesis covered (but no Sega CD, it's the Model 3 Genesis that ditched CD support), but I would need with some games and other hardware. 8D

Force him to play Mother 3, or watch an entire play though.  If he doesn't cry at the end I don't know what to say.
When that wife died early on in that game, I was in tears, and not often any of today's recent games does that to me.
Oh well.  Next time one of those stupid arguments start brewing, I'll just say that we agree to disagree and change the subject.  I don't mind debating with friends and love a rousing nerd debate, but I hate arguing with friends.

If anything, too much dialog can ruin storytelling.

It depends on what genre you're referring to.

Ace Attorney is bursting with dialog, and it has one of the best forms of storytelling I've seen in a game. Same could be said for 999 and VLR (although those two are primarily visual novels, with puzzles thrown in to make it truely playable).

It makes sense in those type of games. The action/sci-fi genre are sometimes best serves with no dialog at times. Hell, same with romance as well. A good scene should speak for itself.

If you want to use gaming as an example, the end credits of Twilight Princess are a great example between Midna & Link before Midna goes back into the Twilight Realm.

The next time someone brings up a negative opinion of silent protagonists, I'm just going to slap a copy of Skyward Sword, Half-Life 2, and Dishonored into their face.

I thought bioshock 2 had you playing as a big brother.
Not exactly faceless, and voiceless is a goven.

Also, eww Genesis 3. Get a 2 at least (Model 1's are the best though. Too bad mine has a shot sound chip.)

To each their own I guess, but I'd have to agree that having a silent protagonist does not ruin a game by any means.

There are other things that truly ruin games.
Like bad music, annoying characters, bad story, awful gameplay, graphics that impede gameplay or aren't very clear (2D games mostly), and of course broken features.

Some good and bad news surfaced recent concerning Zone of the Enders.

Good news: Konami finally acknowleges the complaints about the frame-rate problems and such in Z.O.E HD Collection , PS3 version especially, and they're working on a patch to fix that.

Bad news: Because of these problems, "Enders Project" is gonna be hold because Kojima Productions has to re-work the entire HD Collection from scratch to fix these problems. Thanks, High-Voltage Studios. They also mentioned the 360 version's of this patch isn't being worked on at the moment. This better become "we're not gonna fix it at all" later.

I still have no idea how the 360 version is compared to PS2 originals, and for me it sucks because I'm still missing out on a game that I should have gotten MONTHS ago. And shouldn't be fair to fix the 360 version too in case High-Voltage left any discrepancies? X(
