And I went for a walk and was feasted upon by bugs that also flew up my nose, in my ears, and in my eyes.

How can they fly in your ears, don't bugs hate the smell of earwax?

I don't know, I've had bugs fly into my ears constantly.

Though, I did see a spined micrathena spider, so that was cool.  They're small, ornate spiny orb weaver spiders, and can be really colorful, depending on species.  The one I found was a common arrow-shaped micrathena (M. sagittata), with a spiny arrow-shaped abdomen.  Its dorsal side was mottled with white/yellow.

I guess it depends on the region. I do not think I have ever seen any in Montana or any part of the Northwest.
