Nintendo are still operating like it's 1990. They should have "done a Sega" and offered Mario/Zelda as PS4/Durango exclusives

It is an utterly intentional decision to focus our resources on markets which actually matter ... like mobile, and Gen4.

Yep, we've got plenty of problems, but WiiU isn't where that family/casual market is. It's on mobile/tablet now!

I love how the general public is expected to believe that this wasn't EA's attitude since day one.  If I wanted to play their shitty ports and the last 1/3 of the Mass Effect Trilogy, I wouldn't have bought a WiiU in the first place.  I guess the general public sees a lack of Madden as cause for concern, though.  I, personally, don't.

So, this is a rumor that will be taken with the tiniest grain of salt, but Nintendo might be Recalling the Wii U Basic.

Alongside this comes news of a White version of the Premium Wii U in Japan, along with a new Battery for the Gamepad and an official Wiimote charger.

What do they THINK it means?  The fact that the demand for the Deluxe version vastly outpaces the demand for the Basic version has been a given since launch day.  I'm not sure why anybody is surprised.

Digital Hyrule Historia sounds nice but honestly I know I'm not alone in preferring a physical release.

I mean they did that with Nintendo Land so why not with the other bundles?

I find it hard to believe that they, magically, found space to double the Battery. I think they had the new size planned from the start and there was space for it. Is it user serviceable?

Wii U's are pretty small--barely any larger than the Wii.  The box doesn't need to be particularly large, I don't think.

As for the battery, yes--Nintendo has a long standing habit of doing stuff like this to make extra money.  See also N64 Expansion Pak, every 2nd/3rd edition handheld ever, etc etc.

The software boxes, not the console boxes. Also, I have owned a GBA SP, a DS Lite, a Wavebird, a Wii Remote, and a Gameboy Color, but I have never seen Nintendo, purposefully, use a smaller battery than would fit in the compartment.

That's because they haven't had the opportunity to do so until now.  Note how the Wavebird, Wii Remote, GBC and every iteration of the Gameboy before the SP took AA batteries.

They could have done it with any of their recharchable systems, like the SP, DS, DS Lite, DSi, DSi XL, 3DS. There was plenty of opportunity to purposefully include a smaller battery.

Note how the Wavebird, Wii Remote, GBC and every iteration of the Gameboy before the SP took AA batteries.

Gameboy Pocket used AAAs. And in any of the AA/AAA battery devices, they could have made room for AAs, but made it so they only fit AAAs. They have never released a piece of hardware with such an obvious intent to sell a larger battery. But then, they may have never intended to sell the Battery, but just left the space as an option for them to include a larger battery when they needed more battery life, like if they were pulling a Sony and underclocking the Gamepad.
