Every time I'm told that I require formal education (rather than ostensibly learn on my own from tutorials, books, and videos) to make it in the field, I will point at Liefeld. I feel pretty damn safe in saying that I seriously doubt that he had ever set foot in a classroom and studied figure drawing. Ever.

I remember reading somewhere that Liefeld was self-taught (and that his art wasn't always stylization-gone-wrong).

Also, I doubt any amount of formal training would help someone in the comic book industry if the industry insists on its artists following "standards" like Liefeld's (ex: broken spines for everyone!).
