So far, no princess that needs saving, and of course, the big scary dragon that's keeping her there.

And actually make use of the characters' individual traits? Yeah, sounds good.
Unlike Mario Strikers which, just, kinda used everyone's "style" rather than their form and skills.

As a goalie, Tails could fly overhead and drop the ball at a certain spot after catching it.
Sonic would be the fastest runner.
Knuckles, instead of catching the ball as goalie, could punch it at one person knocking them out for however long.
Etc.

Personally, I don't think the Sword was enough.  He also needs a Bow & Arrow.  Maybe a Boomerang as well.
