Those are stickers. They don't do anything during the match but it can be used during Subspace Emissary.

Those are stickers? Huh, I guess I just never paid any attention to my collection (I beat Normal difficulty SSE back in May without equipping any stickers  ). Now I feel stupid.

I have to go to sleep so I can wake up early tomorrow for work.

The star thing was funny. Ironic that you disappeared like a star in the background when you died...
