From what I could figure, Luigi's jump wasn't any floatier in Super Mario Advance 4 unless you played an e-Reader level or used a certain e-Reader switch card.  Normally it was only animated differently.

Hm...  I'll have to check that again.  But the animation in and of itself was annoying enough.

Pretty sure we prove that on a regular basis with Sonic.

The Sonic fanbase, as a whole, has seemingly such a low regard for quality now-a-days, I don't think they should even be considered beyond the notion of "sucker".

And to think, they used to call us Mega Man fans "Capcom's suckers".  8D

Quote
I can't help but find it ironic that Ben uses an example of a fan's reaction to a character's absence as evidence to why a character's absence to avoid irking the fans is acceptable.

The "irony", if you chose to see it as such, takes a back seat to more of the notion of "how to do things right", or at least, go about from the stand-point of pissing off the least amount of people, as possible. Again, SNK's example is an example of how you [acid burst] people off, when they've come to expect certain things, and then it was taken away. Nintendo's example is more along the lines of "let's not rock the boat, and take the lesser of two evils, as opposing to opening Pandora's box unnecessarily".

Quote
That's actually counter-productive to your argument, then.  If there's precedent for the float being acceptable as a situational move, then Peach's presence in any game with an aerial power-up should be fine.

I don't necessarily see it as such.

If by the same token, Yoshi's Island (as much as I love it so) is not viewed as a traditional Mario game, but yet, certainly makes a lot of equally compelling things for the green dino as well, then I would wager the same can apply for a number of other games in the series. Yoshi is also not used to the extent that I would have liked for a game like this, but again, it is what it is, and for a game like this, it "works".

So, again, we seem to see eye to eye on this basic issue, but I still see it in a decidedly different context. To me, the very fact that Miyamoto talked about Peach's dress, and then went on to talk about Wario supposedly "having to be able to fart" in the same paragraph, leads me to believe that there was likely a good deal of things to consider than certainly what we know now.

I got the impression that the Wario bit was a joke to detract from the fact that Peach wasn't playable.

And, honestly, why would she be? She gets kidnapped; you'd have to disable access to Bowser's Castle after beating the game. Sure playing as her would be great, but it doesn't make sense given the story, not on the first playthrough nor in its postgame.

Or have a New Game+. And that's not in there, otherwise, Miyamoto wouldn't have deconfirmed Peach.

Luigi meets Luigi in Galaxy, doesn't that invalidate the argument?

Except that Miyamoto didn't deconfirm Luigi.

Sure, it's as possible for there to be a Galaxy Peach or Mecha Peach or even a Belome or Doopliss Peach, but we don't have any of these rationally explainable clones period.

Anything and everything is valid for postgame; the story's over.  It doesn't have to make sense anymore.  But at the same time, re-working an ending for the sake of character selection is not Nintendo's forte.  See SM64DS.  Part of me is thinking they wanted an all-male and non-disturbing (Wario) cast so that Peach can comfortably kiss whoever saves her.  Otherwise they could have used original Toad and Toadette instead of Blue Toad and Yellow Toad.

Or Peach kissing Peach.

I guess I should have pointed out the assumption that Peach is not replaced by anybody in the postgame ending.

Not necessarily.  Depends on the player, how much replaying they're doing, what tricks they know, etc.  I mean, Mario 1, 3, and World all have "get a frikkin' ton of extra lives" tricks.  3, perhaps the most critically acclaimed game of all, had one in the second freaking stage.

When playing Super Mario World, I probably leave Yoshi's Island with at least 45-50 lives.  It's pretty much standard Mario.

I just finished off NSMBDS.

Yeah, I died some, but I still have 99 Lives and I'm only a few Star Coins from being 100%, although that's because I memorized half the game. Still, it's been so long that I couldn't possibly remember everything; same goes for SMB3's levels and SMSunshine's Blue Coins.

Thus, their replay value.

That said, I'm THRILLED to hear that the new suits are plentiful, and ILL that the Mini Mushroom will return. NSMB DS had so many Star Coins and secrets that rely on the Mini Mushroom but yet there were next to none. Hopefully that gets fixed.

You actually don't even need that many to appear because you can store them in an inventory just like SMB3. As you advance and grab minis, hold on to 'em until you really need 'em. ;)

I would kill for this feature in Galaxy.
