Seriously, the SNES-style X-series sprites were horrid. They were badly proportioned and didn't allow a decent level of detail to the body, to the point where it was clear in many places that the devs weren't even trying. I could accept it if it was a system limitation, but it wasn't, the SNES was fully capable of better. Hell, the GBC detailed Zero's X2 armor better than the SNES did, which is pretty pathetic. PS1 was without a doubt the best 2D visual style, although reworking the air-dash physics wouldn't hurt any.
Fact is, the SNES style was made for X1. And in X1, the designs were simpler. X2 and X3 got more complicated characters who in the SNES look like a complete mess of pixels. This applies especially to X's armor in X3.
