So, you're looking for easily digestible mecha. G Gundam and Gurren Lagann have already been mentioned (though I wouldn't say they are easily digestible, they have good characters, well, G Gundam at least for that matter). The question is, do you just want giant robots beating each other up or can it be something more complex?

Big O is a definate watch, G, Wing, and SD are highly overraited, with the side of Code Geass and a few others.

Try the lesser Giant Robot anime, for one. I don't think Full Metal Panic's popular around here no?

I recommend the Braves Series.  Especially  Gaogaigar and Might Gaine.  Also Gundam X, G Gundam and Gundam Seed.  Macross (just any),  Transformers Galaxy Force and Patlabor the Mobile Police.
