Topic: Hey, RPM. Help me pimp my PS2.

So, what with Garou: Mark of the Wolves not getting a US PS2 release and King of Fighters 2002 UM being awhile before it gets a US release, if it gets one, oh and don't forget Melty Blood: Act Cadenza, I decided that I should look into importing (because I love my fighters).

Before anyone says "Google", I already googled it. What I'm wanting is advice. I've read about the SwapMagic and Slide Hook as well as the Memory Card with the modchip already inside it. These are the two I'm looking at as I don't really wanna crack open my PS2. I don't trust myself, really.

So has anyone tried any either of these or something like them and what would be the most trustworthy places to get materials to do so from?

Seriously though, I think the SwapMagic tool that (I'm guessing) is the slide hook or whatever, is probably you're best bet. It's fairly easy to remove the disc tray thing that's facing outwards or whatever, and it pops back in place as well, meaning the process shouldn't be too hard.

The only disadvantage would be that you have to use it everytime you start or change a game.

I think the slide hook tool sort of negates this, since it isn't physically modding your PS2 at all, just breaking apart the front end of the loading tray which can come off anyway naturally and then ripping the tray out without hitting the button. If you want to actually play a game that doesn't need it, you wouldn't have to use it.

i'm using FreeMcBoot its the memorycard hack, bad thing i can't play my import originals i have to rip them first and patch them with mementopatch.
but you don't need to open your ps2 with that you just need to find someone who can load it onto your ps2 memorycard, also you will need an empty memory card.
for the rest use google with FreeMcBoot/ESR/Memento

Swap Magic works wonders for me.  Easy to set up, easy to use.  Lord knows I couldn't live without my Gundam VS games after coming back from Japan!

So it seems like Swap Magic is the way to go? From what I've read it, its really not that complicated. It takes 10-15 seconds tops and it does no damage to the system.

If you've got a slim PS2, Swap Magic is really, incredibly easy.  All you have to do is put a couple little plastic pieces in the disc tray.

The problem with it is that the DVD driver disc for Swap Magic has a known issue where it'll load once, and then never work again.  It shouldn't be too hard to get a replacement disc from wherever you buy it, but it bears mention.  This happened to me, although the replacement disc works perfectly.
