Hey, I got into a debate with another guy about the whole, "Is X Rock?". I have taken the side of him not being Rock because I remember the Mega Man Network had an interview with Keiji Inafune where he said they weren't the same. I tried to find this piece of evidence, only to see that it had been taken down from the site.

So, is there a chance someone has a copy of this interview? It took place in 2004, but other than that, I don't have much other information about it.

They used the old Mega Man Network URL, which now redirects to AtomicGamer that has nothing.

Lemme just quote one of our veterans' sig:

Let's just sit down, chant and summon Zan. Maybe he'll hear our plea and enlighten us with his neverending knowledge.

Google.

Not like it matters, Capcom has also said on their DASH blog of sorts that Rock, X and Trigger are all different people.

Gaaah, I suck at using Google. I can't seem to find any sort of statement from Capcom themselves, but I know it's been stated several times.

Would you happen to have a link to this magnificent blog, oh great Zan?

Well, somebody ELSE would have to beat Marshmallow Man into submission and journal his snippits.

Must be hard for that marshmallow person to be so noteworthy.

MMN, so far as I know, never had an interview with Inafune themselves, but Planet Mega Man did at E3 2003, which is I think what the TC was looking for earlier. Here's the text writeup of it. (Get ready to archive!)

Quote
Sean: Are there any unannounced additions to the series games that we
can look forward to, like Rockman EXE 4, Rockman Dash 3 or Rockman 9?

Keiji: Yes in fact, there be a [Rockman EXE] part 4, for sure that's
in the making. It's going to be slightly different from the games
you've seen up until now. Currently we plan to give Mega Man a little
rest, a little break in his normal series, his X series and his
[Legends] series, and we want to focus a little bit more on the
Mega Man Battle Network series.

Sean: Do you have any personal opinions as to how the Rockman games
are translated and brought over to the United States, and is there
anything you wish could have been done differently?

Keiji: Actually, yeah, concerning localization of most of the Mega Man
games, I think probably for having let Capcom USA decide a lot of the
names there are some things you just can't translate correctly. We
have to let the American side determine what kind of names to use.
And of course I'd like it if we could use the same names throughout
all the markets, but sometimes that's just not possible, so I've
decided to leave a lot of that up to the staff over in America. But
in a perfect world, it would be nice if we could use same names for
everything for the whole series.

Sean: We've noticed that there have been a few Guns N' Roses references
throughout the Mega Man X series. Is there a reason for this?

Keiji: Actually, I think you're probably talking about recent Mega
Man X series games when you make that reference. Really, we're not
taking them directly from rock bands or anything like that, that's
not what we mean to do. Just certain names sound cool to us, so we're
just using them that way. It's not like we really think we like Guns
N' Roses so we want to use part of their group or anything like that.

Sean: Well thank you for clearing that up. It's a question I've had
on my mind for some time. Mega Man NT Warrior is almost here in the
United States and there's been a lot of excitement about it. How do
you feel about the show coming into the United States and how it was
translated, and should we be looking forward to any future Rockman
animated productions?

Keiji: Actually, concerning the American version of Mega Man NT
Warrior, it seems really interesting to me. I actually saw it for
the first time yesterday, and of course all the voices are really
different. Actually a lot of voices, especially Mega Man's voice,
seemed a lot more adult than in the Japanese version. I think that
actually probably works really well in the American territory; it
felt like a really different kind of Mega Man that I wasn't really
used to, but I think it worked out rather well. Cocnerning other
versions of Mega Man cartoons, there are a few anime that we have
released in Japan. One shot deals, OVAs, et cetera. But I don't
really think those are probably going to be released in America.

Sean: Many changes occur between Rockman and Rockman X in the game
series. Though X7 is about to release, we're hoping that you might
be able to give us some insight. Is Rockman X a new robot or is he
a rebuilt form of the original Rockman? And if so, will we find out
what happens to all of Rockman's most prominent allies and enemies?

Keiji: Yes, actually, the original Mega Man and the Mega Man that
appears in the Mega Man X series of course very different, and when
I created these, this Mega Man X series, I kept that in mind. I
wanted to make a different kind of Mega Man. And so I think there's
probably a certain kind of fun to be had with the original Mega Man
and that's very different from the kind of fun you get when you play
the Mega Man X series. So in fact they are different. Concerning any
tie-ins or any future games where you will find about the
releationship between these two different Mega Mans, we currently
have no plans to release those. Instead, we're planning on creating
the Mega Man Battle Network, making that a little bit bigger in the
future games. That's what I want to focus on now.

Sean: A good deal of characters in Rockman come from space, like the
Space Rulers from Rockman World 5, Ra Moon from Super Adventure
Rockman, and Duo and the Evil Energy from Rockman 8. Is there any
background you might be able to give on these characters?

Keiji: Actually I wish there was an extremely deep story for the
reason why there are so many characters that come from space, but
there really isn't. It's merely an action game, and the story doesn't
run that deep. There is one character that does have quite a
background story concerning why he's in space, and that's the
character Duo. That character is actually a space police member
and he chases one of his enemies down to Earth.  That's why he is
actually in space.

Sean: Repliroids in Rockman Zero look quite different from the
Repliroids that are in Rockman X. Is there any specific basis for
this change, such as new technology, or is this merely a change of
art style?

Keiji: Of course, yes, Mega Man Zero takes place 100 years after the
X series, so of course the technology has advanced quite a bit, and
we had to redeisgn all the robots to reflect that.

Sean: My last question for you; in the Rockman X series, every
Repliroid sppears to have a jewel somewhere on their body. It's been
said that these jewels have a special purpose. Do they?

Keiji: As for why they have them, you could say it's kind of a
standard for their uniform or it symbolizes they're all in the same
force. Other than that there's no really deep meaning as to why
they're put on there. The character designer liked the way they
looked and put them on.

It never did much to settle Rock/X debates back then for how it was worded, but it might have convinced a few people way back when. IMO, the illegible moonspeak was clearer.

Are you looking for this?

Quote
Q: Is X the same robot as the original Mega Man?
A: Well, we can only speak on what information Capcom has given us. And while we've never been given a definitive answer, the overwhelming evidence points to "no." According to the Japanese sourcebook, "Rockman & Rockman X daizukan" Mega Man and Mega Man X's specifications are very dissimilar. Mega Man is 132 centimeters tall and weights 105 kilograms. X, meanwhile is 160 centimeters tall and 57 kilograms. Even though X is taller than Mega Man, he weighs much less. The most common assumption from theorists that believe they are the same robot is that Dr. Light transferred the mental state of one into another. This, too, is faulty, as the sourcebook defines Mega Man's mental programming is for the human age of 10, while X's mental programming is for the human age of 14-15, with the ability to mature. Mega Man's programming does not mention the ability to mature, so it couldn't have matured to a 14-15 year old state of mind. Also, X's unique mind is a staple of the X series, as it states quite implicitly in the first game that he is the first robot to think for himself. Since Mega Man was based on Proto Man's designs, it would stand to reason that if Mega Man developed a mind, Proto Man would as well, and probably earlier.
