Basically, all those friend codes will be completely worthless. Wii Shop Channel will still be around though. This makes sense considering that the Wii Mini (the only original model still around) doesn't have Online functionality at all.

We all know that all gaming servers go "poof" one day, but I guess what surprises me is pulling the plug on the entire system's libraries at the same time.  Especially the Wii, since the WiiU is still beefing up its library.  We'll barely have Mario Kart 8 in our hands by the time this shutdown happens.

I feel it's a little bit too early to be yanking the plugs on the old online systems. People still have DSis and play online with those y'know. The adoption rate of the Wii U hasn't exactly been that stellar either.

I mean, a couple years from now, sure. But not while their current systems still haven't fully taken off yet.

I don't know who in their right mind still connects online with DSi.  I get the DS shutdown more than I get the Wii shutdown.

*sighs*  I guess this will be more motivation for me to get into Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, since my Tri data will be useless online soon anyway.

So IGN alleges that the imminent DS/Wii shutdown is due to GameSpy's servers going kaput.  Don't know how much stock to put in them as of late, but I guess it does make more sense than Nintendo just pulling an arbitrary date out of the air while the WiiU is still struggling to gain traction.

Yeah, Nintendo did use GameSpy for servers on DS and Wii. A lot of things did, and now that GameSpy's being shut down Nintendo decided to pull theirs a little earlier than the rest of the system.

Though apparently I just found this article from a little over a year ago that says GameSpy was shutting down. So I guess we should've been prepared for this?
