What would Mario RPG be like if Nintendo and Square made it today?

I think instead of playing as Mario, it would be about an effeminate young boy who falls into his toilet one day and gets flushed down the drain, then ends up in the Mushroom Kingdom.  After befriending Mario, Geno, and Cloud they go on a magical journey together to stop some mysterious and evil organization from stealing all the Star Pieces.  He also wears a lot of belts, and Mario uses a plunger sword.

What do you guys think?

Protoman Blues

Sounds extremely accurate actually.  Although for all we know, we'll see Mario & Luigi with lots of belts and zippers, and Peach in a more revealing FF outfit.

That hat looks [tornado fang]ing awesome.

I gotta say, I kinda agree. XD

EDIT - The name of the game would probably be "The Kingdom Ends With You" for shits and giggles. XD

HyperSonicEXE

It would be Super Mario RPG with the following tweaks, for better or for worse:

~ATB with timed hits
~Half the good humor; the rest is dry
~Increased number of stereotypes
~Any new main characters would more than likely flop...
~...except enemies and bosses, which SE still seems to be able to do well
~One composed melody would be overarching throughout the game (akin to what SMW and PM1 did)
~Would ultimately be forgettable

In fact, we couldn't possibly predict what would have happened if Nintendo and Square never split.

Perhaps they had to be separated, to prevent global disaster

Dunno.

Consider this:

Sony and Nintendo never split and Square and Nintendo never split. Imagine what we'd have nowadays.

A Wii with the power of the PS3.

That's some scary [parasitic bomb] right there. Also, SEGA would still be swinging with the big guys.

Not necessarily.

If we were still assuming that this scenario happened, with Sega still going as they were...I couldn't see Sega being in any better of a position. A Nintendo 64+Playstation combo would have utterly CRUSHED the Saturn, even worse than how the Saturn faired in our world. And I don't imagine a Dreamcast fairing any better in this environment.

The only thing I could have imagining going any better, would be if the whole "Windows CE" thing that worked into the DC's innards, might have been taken farther, so that Microsoft and Sega may have had a partnership. That might have been a bit better, in the long haul, than the whole "Sega Sammy" thing that happened years back.

Honestly, I wish Sony and Nintendo would find together again. Not just because the outcome would we highly interesting, but because the console market doesn't need 3 competitors.

I would honestly agree but at the same time, crossing each other's streams doesn't sound like it'll ever be considered by either side. What I'm still waiting on is a bit more blasphemous though...

Nintendo/SEGA of Japan anyone? 8D

To be honest with you, I really have a hard time picturing Square and Nintendo nowadays. I had a played a few Nintendo/Square RPGs but I cannot really imagine anything too spectcular especially with Sakaguchi with his Mistwalker company. I am not that much of an expert on the subject but I believe that of they did create a Super Mario RPG 2, it would have to have a really engaging storyline, unique characters and enough challenges to keep in the gamer for weeks. SMRPG was kind of short, they probably make the game a bit longer and most of all, we would more Final Fantasy (Pre VII) esque bosses like Culex or the Bahamutt dragon in Boswer's castle.

As for gameplay, I would just keep as is with more timed hits, better attacks and most of all, more BGM besides the traditional battle theme, boss battle theme and super boss battle theme.

I agree on everything else but that reference scares me. :\
Current playthrough: Chrono Trigger and God Eater Ressurection

HyperSonicEXE

I'm just trying to think of who the inevitable secret boss would be.

Wario? Wart? Maybe even somebody FFish, like the Dimension Demon from FFTA2.

EDIT: Actually, Illua or those giant birds (FFTA2) would fit in a little too well for comfort into the Mario universe.
