For that reason Ace' mother died after giving birth to the child

We get to see Luffy and allies for a short moment at the Gate of Justice but there's a change of scenery shortly afterwards

Yes they do, Ace. I don't remember where I read it, but I do remember Ace saying something along the lines of "our mother". They are also both the son of Monkey D. Dragon, but Ace hates his father, so he took his mother's name instead of his father's.
