Hey, remember that one shading exercise I said I may do something with?

I started to do something with it.

We really need a splash of blood here and there. XD

Lemme get a background in there first, then I'll start spraying blood. XD

Whatever you're doing to it, keep on doing it!  8D

Glorious pic.
And yes... Blood... Blood of the sinned...

I'm watching you all. Always watching.

Quickie, you do all of your colouring in Photoshop right? *tries really hard not to ask buuuut...* When you're finished with this, I'd really like to see how you achieved your results.

Quickman

Yeah, I do all my colouring in Photoshop.  That one was mainly an experiment.  I did it like how I usually colour, only instead of just shading via large pools of colour, I dropped the brush size down to 3 pixels and treated it as if I were using my coloured pencils.  No real uniform strokes, just colouring and blending mostly.

Pepan's (the Kubaz with the crowbar) colour palette was the same one I used with a coloured pencil drawing.  In the coloured pencil drawing, I used some things I learned from Photoshop, like using purple to shade.  So, Pepan's shading is Orchid, from a box of Prang coloured pencils.  Using various shades of purple for shading produces some nice results.  It may seem weird to use it, but if you look closely, there are a number of things that, in the right light, will take on a purplish cast.

I plan to add a wall back there and some debris, but thus far...

You wanted blood?  You got blood. =P

Protoman Blues

That's just simply in-[tornado fang]ing-credible.

Dr. Wily II

Yes... Blood... Pleasing blood...

And seriously, this is way awesome.

It has a background!

And my name's signed on the top crate.  Hid it in the graffiti.

Dr. Wily II

Wow... The smoke/steam/gas... Very fitting background, very brilliant touch on your name in the graffiti.

I'm watching you all. Always watching.

Absolutely incredible.

And, for the hell of it, here's just the background sketch that I used for the above pic.  I scanned it in at 200 dpi, so if anyone needs a quick sewer/underground background and doesn't feel like drawing one, you can use this one.

Dr. Wily II

Use it for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
It's just so fitting.

Quickman

And how equally fitting that I was listening to the TMNT Arcade Game music while working on it. XD

Background banzai!

So you never actually retrace the background on PS? It's so clean.

I just scanned it in, darkened the linework by adjusting the levels, replaced any leftover blue from my non-photo blue pencil that the scanner picked up, further adjusted the levels, then made it black-and-white.

borockman

Ah, make sense. but you did inked the background first right?

Quickman

Nope.  That's all pencil.  If the pencils are dark and clean enough, by playing with the levels (Image--> Adjustments--> Levels), you can usually play around with the sliders for Shadows, Midtones, and Highlights until you get the pencils dark enough to look like inks.

Sometimes, playing the the threshold (Image--> Adjustments--> Threshold) will sharpen up the linework, but that can also make it a bit jaggy.

Just some tips plucked from the DC Comics Guide to Digitally Creating Comics.

borockman

Whoa, so that's all pencil! I should definitely try that trick sometime. Thanks for sharing the secret.  8)
