Ninja Theory boss Tameem Antoniades has said that DmC Devil May Cry's new look for Dante is "all about cool" and that the previous Dante design we've come to know and love just "isn't cool anymore".

The Dante That Almost Was

Perhaps surprisingly, it was a departure driven by the people at Capcom who birthed the Devil May Cry series.

Jones said when he was first approached by Capcom Japan, he was told that the U.S. offices of Capcom were being given stewardship of the series because the developers wanted a "western-oriented title."

Methinks that Inafking is doing this because of the zeitgeist. After all, Americans love things like God Of War-ish action games, Gears Of Wars/Halo-esque first-person shooters and MMOs these days, amirite?

What.

I recall seeing a totally different interview - not so long ago - where some Capcom representative said that the new DmC is set in an alternate universe from the original DMC, a decision sparked by the massive "negative feedback" on the new DmC.

Edit: No luck finding the interview again; but the Devil May Cry wiki has the same claims.

As initial fan reaction to the teaser has been quite negative, Capcom issued a statement clarifying that this game takes place in a different universe, as it is being developed by a different developer from previous titles of the franchise, and will not affect any story elements already established by the classic series.
