"2K Games has made it official. Duke Nukem Forever is alive and, well, in the hands of developer Gearbox Software, confirming our earlier reports that the Borderlands studio was helping to complete the game's absurdly long development cycle.

The publisher announced this morning in advance of PAX 2010 that Gearbox Software was on the job, picking up where developer 3D Realms left off. Gearbox plans to ship the game within the next year, according to a report from the Wall Street Journal—the WSJ says DNF is due "next year" and "currently expected to ship in 2010."

Given Duke Nukem Forever's epic development—it was first announced in 1997 as a sequel to Duke Nukem 3D—it might be wise to hedge on the later of those two release windows.

Gearbox and 2K will be showcasing the game to press and the public at this weekend's PAX convention. 2K Games is offering a publicly playable demo of Duke Nukem Forever at its booth.

After more than a decade in development, Duke Nukem Forever all but ended its production after the collapse of studio 3D Realms. Gearbox Software president Randy Pitchford tells the WSJ that his studio picked up development in late 2009 and that the game is currently in the "polishing" stages."

Why is it relaited? It's relaited because I'm happy that the game's finally getting released.

One mention of LEGENDS and everyone goes batshit.  :\

Yep, every time when someone mentions that game people get energized for an apparent reason whatsoever. It's like this everywhere else, trust me.

It got really messy to find my sprite and comic topic, so it's in my sig.

Oh yes.
Another mediocre shooter.
OH I SO WAITED FOR THIS DAY!

No, seriously, I really did.
Even tough I don't like Duke Nukem.

I'm actually really really REALLY glad for this.

...seriously, the previews we've seen of this game looked really awesome. And when was the last time that we've had an FPS that just cared about being simple and pure fun, without taking itself seriously in the least? Last ones I remember, were Serious Sam and Painkiller, and neither of them reached the awesome that was Duke 3D. That game was AMAZING back in the day, and still continues to be the one FPS one can really go all-out with, with pure, "oh what the hell [tornado fang] yeah" fun.

Not only that, Gearbox is really good at what they do. All of their games so far have shown quite a bit of professionalism and lots of fun. If anyone can pull this off, it's them. We're looking at a quality videogame here, people.

I'm betting on Duke.

I've never played Duke Nukem, but when I saw "Gearbox", I was a bit surprised.

Bet on Duke, indeed.

I put on my [twin slasher] face.

I also go by Spectro D., Idylleaus, Malabar, and Dumb-bit Twofuck.

Rayl

Oooooh that looks niiiice! I heard about this a little while ago but yeah now i'm seeing the videos it looks pretty tasty. Let's hope we get a proper gameplay video soon.

Commander Shepard: *stares blankly at a video of scantily clad asari dancers* ...What kind of hotel is this?
Liara T'Soni: It is a luxury resort with an... exotic edge.  Azure is slang for a part of the asari body in some places on Illium.
Shepard: Where?
Liara: The lower reaches, near the bottom.
Shepard: I meant, "where on the asari body?"
Liara: So did I.

So why the Cycloid Emperor battle rehash?

Hiryu

*checks date* April fools was 5 months ago, y'know.

Anyone checked the temperature of hell lately?

Where did my pigs go? I was sure I locked the gate to the pen...

Nonetheless, this is quite interesting, assuming this time it hits actual shelves.

So I go away, and Duke thread goes under? You people have no respect for legends.

Police Girl

Jeez, how much does the damn BoS edition cost? $200?

Looking at it now, $90 doesn't seem so bad.

If I have any cash that I'm not saving for my Figure Collecting, I might consider getting it.

Getting it. And then I'm buying a lottery ticket.

And writing "ON DUKE" in it.

Kieran

I'm still somewhat in disbelief that this is even happening, to tell you the truth.

But hell, I'll still buy a copy.

I rise an important question at this point...
Is this confirmed to NOT suck and be just ANOTHER shitty FPS? I mean, I know it's Duke n'all but... is there something that will make this game STAND OUT from all dem FPS? Besides Duke himself, of course. Not hatin, just askin'.
Well, a wide range of factors, really.

First off, when was the last time you had FUN playing an FPS? Duke 3D was an amazing marvel back then. The best FPS in the market, not just in terms of pure joy, but in involvement with the scenery, touching stuff, interacting and going through things and details. This game has that. When was the last time you had a shrink ray in a game? When was the last time your health was called EGO and recharged by flexing in front of a mirror or fist-bumping soldiers mid war? This game has that.
FPS games nowadays, are either about realistic wars, like the Battlefield and Call of Duty series, or about serious situations and stories, like Bioshock. Then there's the odd one like Bulletstorm, which is just sheer fun, but not exactly a straight FPS, and more versed towards sliding from enemy to enemy comboing them all up like a pinball machine. Duke is the cool brother of the FPS. Fun that is timeless. Duke 3D can be played today to the same enjoyment that games like Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time can. It was the FPS that made FPS games FUN.
It's from the family of the games which didn't require story, or narrative, or morals. What do you need? To know that the Earth's in danger. What do you do? Defend the earth. Kick some alien ass. Get all of the babes. Be the most awesome hero that is, Duke Nukem. Have fun on the wild ride that is your game. That, is what Duke is about. Having lots of fun. Kicking aliens in the balls. Making sexist jokes and watching lesbians kiss.

How do I know this game will be really cool? The same way you guys knew Megaman 9 and New Super Mario Bros was gonna be really cool. It's Duke. Made by Gearbox using the whole game as created by 3D Realms, the original Duke 3D makers. It's gonna rule. No, it's not going to live up to the expectation. NO, it's not gonna be the greatest FPS of all time. It will not be revolutionary, it will not have amazing graphics, and it will not have outstanding new features.

But it's gonna be really fun.
