"Certainly," Giovanni nodded. "The inspiration for the project started before I had succeeded my mother. But, then, it was just a search for Mew. Twenty years later, I had since taken my mother's place, and had decided that if we can't find Mew, we'll clone it. I had sent an expedition team to procure a Mew fossil, and contracted an offsite laboratory to clone the creature. Though, after several unsuccessful attempts, I decided that we should make an enhanced clone. The scientific team agreed, and genetic material from other sources was used to fill in the gaps from the Mew DNA, and about a year later, we successfully created Mewtwo."
He paused and rubbed the back of his neck for a moment. He felt a bit odd, but he ignored the feeling. "The point of the project originally was to see if it could be done. Once my team had a stable embryo, then the time came for further enhancements. Then, once Mewtwo was successfully matured and stable, the purpose changed to creating a Pokemon that I could use in gym battles."
