As we all saw today, the unveiling of the slick, shiny, new sex machine, the Nintendo 3DS. A technical demo shown at E3 2010 of a game called "Classic Games" showing off 18 games from the NES and SNES area for the new handheld, one of those games, happened to be MegaMan 2.

Here, have a snippet from an IGN article;
Quote
"One of the more surprising of the tech demos was something called "Classic Games." In this interactive but nonplayable demo, you could cycle through 18 different pixel-perfect NES and Super NES games and see them reprocessed in 3D. Basically, all the sprites and backgrounds have been pulled forward or pushed backwards to provide the appropriate illusion of depth using the stereoscopic LCD of the system.

"The list of games in this collection included Mario Bros., Tennis, Super Mario Bros. The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Musasame, Punch-Out!!, Excitebike, NES Open Golf, Twin Bee, Super Mario World, Kirby's Adventure, Mega Man 2, Castlevania, Urban Champ, Kid Icarus, Yoshi's Island, and Smash Ping Pong."

Seriously. I want.

In all honesty, applying 3D effects to 2D games does strike me as mildly gimmicky.

But what the hell, we all know I'd buy it anyway! 8)  NES Punch-Out!! with enemies flying across a 3D ring when KOed, that I'd like to see.  It's the one thing the Wii Punch-Out!! lacked (well, that and late-game opponents who can actually be beaten by reaction time rather than memorization).

3D Twin Bee (hey, it rhymes!) where you actually fly above the ground. I love this already.

"There was a curious reel of more than a dozen old-school games, including Mega Man 2, Castlevania, Urban Champion, Kid Icarus, Yoshi's Island, Smash Ping Pong, Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros., Tennis, The Legend of Zelda, Metroid and Mystery of Murasame Castle....

I asked Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime what to make of all these old-school remakes. Were they all going to be games on the 3DS? Yes, he said, but he cautioned me not to think of them as remakes. Echoing comments by Nintendo's head developer, Shigeru Miyamoto from a roundtable earlier in the week, Fils-Aime said these games were potentially getting more than just ported over. Miyamoto had talked about trying new features in the games that would take advantage of the 3DS' capabilities."

Now confirmed.

I watched a VB Wario Land speedrun. It seemed quite nice actually.

But what I want most is a 3DS Mega Man game. Or a Castlevania game.

Game Boy series games might be available on the DS shopping channel later.
Just a hint I got from insiders, but take it with a grain of salt. ^^;

I would love to see the classic games in 3DS too. x3

Hm. Classic GB games would be nice. I would totally love to play Link's Awakening, Metroid II: Return of Samus, and heck, even Tetris in 3D.

Never played Metroid 2. Would very much like to, seeing as it's the only Metroid game which hasn't been remade or ported in any way yet.

...although that fan-remake looks good.

Know what I'd love to see? A virtual console for the GBA with an virtual Slot-2. That way 3DS games can take advantage of GBA games like some DS games did.

Still, even if the 3DS didn't have that I'm totally going to buy it day one.

Hm. That would certainly be interesting. If such GBA VC does get made, I would love to see the games support the 3D effects. Playin' Golden Sun, Pokemon, Metroid Fusion, and other GBA games in 3D would be uberly awesome.

I can live without seeing 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 again. The first three games, 9, 10, and Rockman & Forte are the ones I do want to see on the 3DS.

Forgive my personal opinion but, much as I love Bass, I'd say 8 > R&F any day of the week.  The power-up selection is infinitely superior, as is the utilization of Rush (seriously, Rush Search must stay dead, no matter the cost).

Plus we could definitely use a second shot at redoing it, considering how pitiful MM8's emulation quality was in AC.  And, if we're mandating a recode by nature of the 3D effect, maybe we can even get the Saturn TenguMan music and extra boss fights in there.

The Saturn extras would be nice. I also want a new final boss. I didn't enjoy fighting the crappified version of Rockman 7's final boss. Also, I would love to see new layouts for the stages, akin to Rockman Rockman.

Variations of 7's Wily capsule are pretty much standard, though, being featured in 8, B, 9, and even ZXA.  10 was thankfully a far more loose derivative, breaking the established attack patterns and at the same time offering a hats-off to MM3 with the robo double.
