I agree! It sounds super epic and 10x better than it was originally! ^_^
But the original is a classic I still like.

So, news...

QuoteHey guys,

I have some good and some bad news.
The bad news is that the game project file got out of hand and is crashing a lot during compilation. That was really unexpected but the good news is that won't stop me. I decided to recode most of the basic engine to optimize the game potential and also free some memory.

When I started this project I was new at flash and didn't knew much so I did stuff the easiest way. Now that I know a lot more about Flash and also what is going into the game it makes it so much easier to implement things on a more efficient way.

The current project had over 12,000 objects in the library including exported assets, over 6,000 of those were player sprites and animations. Now I created a system that will break up a sprite sheet so I can use any frames to make animations. I'm no longer using timeline for animations, everything is coded, which gives me a lot more control. I think this will take down the object count by 90% freeing up a lot of memory.

Not everything will need to be recoded, like title and pause menu. Although the map system could be improved I will still keep it's original format otherwise it would take too much development time. I still have all the sprites, just need to make them into a sheet instead of separate files now.

Another good news it that I might be able to run this at 60 fps now, well so far it's handling it well but there are still some elements to add. I've also added several new gimmicks that weren't possible on the old system like inverted gravity, moving ladders and much more.
Once the new engine is done, it will be much easier to add new content.

I'll keep you guys updated.

Thanks for all the support,

-John

...When Larry the reploid accountant goes maverick of his own accord, he's certainly formidable during tax season, but he isn't going to provide X the challenge needed to make him grow as a warrior and reach his potential.

i literally grabbed my computer screen with a D: face when I read that

So... did they lost a ALL of what they made, with the attacks, maps, features, etc...?
I hope they doesn't slow them down and they can proceed to finishing the game to its fullest potential.

And that's what happens when you try to make a game under Flash. Something bad would happen like that. :-/

Don't think you would have come across any problem like that if you were to start building the game with something like C++, or Game Maker, or MMF2. But at least you tried. ;)

Good luck with what you have so far. :)

VirusChris

Hmm... might I recommend Stencyl? It's a freeware game making program that allows you to make ANY kind of game without programming knowledge and the use of snippets that handles the code that act like puzzle pieces to build the game.

I didn't lose anything, I just need to do some clean up on the code and change a few things to use less objects.

Crashing just means the compilation failed. If you can't compile you can't test your stuff, so progress is halted, but nothing is actually lost.

Meritur

Almost a Month, now. I have grown kind of curious
How is programming the new engine going?

Have you been able to finish the coding on X´s and Zeros moves?
Is it a lot more work now that you have removed the timeline?

RetroRespecter

I am more concerned with how the final product will look like now that there was a crash in the system and JKBGames is redoing almost everything from scratch.

I don't think it's as bad as you think it is, Retro.

Only thing I'm concerned about (if this is still being programmed in Flash, despite the crash that occurred) is whether or not the game will be playable as an EXE. I'd honestly hate to have to play this online only. But since it has a save function, I'd assume that it works just like most games do and should be playable at my leisure. (Unlike Diablo 3.)

Align

Um, well, any flash game can be downloaded (as a SWF file) and played offline... well, there's a few that check for a connection I guess, but there's no reason this would do that.

KoiDrake

Flash isn't for online stuff exclusively, they can be exported as EXE files too.

A quick question.More like a reassurance, but you are coding the game using AS3, right?

Yes, he is.

EDIT: Sorry, he's using AS2.

Basically, the game's description is...
Defeat 8 mavericks, go through a castle, and defeat Sigma(possibly Sigma's in this game)
WeatherSTAR 5000/5000 XL Developer!

Is there something wrong with that? (._.`)

Is this project dead? It hasn't been updated in a while now...

Flame

Well he's recoding certain parts of the engine, so who knows how long that will take, and aside from that, the game still is not complete, there are other things still left to do.
