AMEN PREACH THE TRUTH

Also, Nintendo's anti-piracy policies can go to hell and back. And to hell again.

No kidding.

Soulsilver and Heartgold is a nice example.

What we need is a power glove.
Why? Because it's so bad.
A left-handed power glove is also required to cater to the needs of our lefty comrades. SUPPORT OUR CAUSE! owob

Damn, I completely forgot about this. Oh well, time to reopen the subject...

http://kotaku.com/5537162/guess-who-is-the-worlds-most-successful-game-studio

I kinda thought this was relevant. To my arguments that Nintendo can pretty much take the risk and plunge into some good development of new properties, for a change.

Activision, UbiSoft and EA certainly can. And they're the constant targets of a ton of rage. Why not Nintendo? We already know their hardware development does make a crapload of money. Now we know their game developemt studio is the most succesful in the world. And it's certainly refreshing to see it mentioned alongside studios like Infinity Ward and UbiSoft Montreal.

Well, those three get a lot of rage for things indirectly linked to the games they make (ie DRM) moreso than the games themselves. On the same coin though, Nintendo does get a lot of slack for their online, so they're in no way exempt.

Also again, I must point out that those companies don't have to worry about R&D. Also, ugh... UbiSoft Montreal. Don't get me started on the policies there, or else I'll never stop 8D

Activision, UbiSoft and EA don't really have legions of fans that come to their aid on internet debates. =P They're just regularly hated upon, no matter how fond our memories of Rayman and other properties are. Pretty much all companies get rage. Nintendo seems to be exempt from providing us with good online service or online multiplayer, new properties or any kind of changes from their current model. And yet... they're the most successful gaming company in the world. There's gotta be something wrong with that.

I think it's because a lot of people have grown up with Nintendo and can seriously attest to the ridiculous level of quality most (if not all) of their properties have when they come about. This makes an irrational situation where one side who can sit out and deal with the droughts of new content is content so long as the traditional and time honored franchises get new spins while the other side can't seem to deal with the releases of the "same old, same old" and crave something new from them.

Basically, it's a situation where Nintendo (to the general public eye) gets so much right when they get to it that it seriously overshadows their "lolwat"s and wrongs all at the same time. The more enthusiast groups however see that some of those wrongs and eye raisers are getting a bit harder to justify looking over as time goes by and things change.

Rayman should have stayed the same way that 1 was. 2 was fun, but NOWHERE near as charming as the trippy colorful world of 1. 3 seemed to catch a bit of the charm of 1 juuuust a little, but stiill didnt quite have it.
Interesting to know Rayman 2 was almost 2D sidescrolling like 1.

We knew that. But see, I'm not a Nintendo fan. I used to be a Sega fanboy, but I knew good games where I saw them, so yes, I spent many a night playing Mario, Zelda and Kirby. And I loved Nintendo's stuff. I thought it was amazing. But I just didn't feel like it was any kind of religion to me, you know? I played the games, enjoyed them for what they were, and waited for more stuff. Same with the other companies. Sony and Microsoft seem to have a steady supply of titles for their consoles coming out, enough to soothe any gamer's thirst one might have. I just got Rocket Knight today, and I'm trying to decide between Alan Wake and Red Dead Revolver Redemption for my next week's game buying. But I don't have that kind of luxury from Nintendo. I LOVE the Wii, I really do. I look at it, and I see remnants of the Dreamcast. A console with fantastic ideas, but few games for how genius it was. But the DC had a short run. The Wii's being widely successful, while still catching tons of dust on my shelf. I'm not saying Nintendo HAS to appeal to all audiences, but they used to, you know? Setting aside stuff like the Virtual Boy, they knew how to give love to every person who bought their consoles. Sure, the Gamecube had a bit of a drought, but tons of new experiences were had there. Resi 4? Eternal Darkness? Tales of Symphonia? Chibi-Robo? I still play them today. Games that actually competed with the stuff on the other consoles... and WON. The N64 had the loving embrace of Rare, being the first console where FPS games started being done right, and many people had their first FPS experience with it. Getting my Pokémon to battle in a high graphics environment? Incredible. Full 3D platforming games? Zelda going from a 2D epic to what many believe still to be the greatest game ever made? These things were beautiful and magical. Nintendo showered us with love, and had FUN doing that. I'm asking for wonderful new Nintendo adventures, in a time when Nintendo's at their highest point ever. They're on the top of the world, and they can innovate like NEVER before. They can recruit anyone, assemble any team, get together any kind of group... they could make some kind of contest, to give some kind of attention to indie developers, get some new ideas out there. Get something HAPPENING. Make the Nintendo spirit be seen once more. I'm getting alot of love from Super Mario Galaxy, but from nowhere else. Where's the love?

Hmm, in a lot of ways, you and I are similar Flash. I really don't know how to answer these questions sometimes since I don't have any real knowledge of what Nintendo is thinking, but I am really taking a sort of gamble and being patient for those Nintendo quality things to roll out once again.

Thanks for understanding my point. It's not that I don't agree with the direction Nintendo's taking. But when I think of the beautiful experiences they used to lead us in, I kinda feel that that Nintendo is kinda gone. I haven't seen creative Nintendo ever since the first Galaxy came out.

I see your point... yeah, the games in that era were truly great, and they haven't done anything as innovative since the first Galaxy. Hmm... They really should take some pages from their playbook back then and use them for new games now.

I see your point Flash, I really do. Things is, aiming for a different audience was an enormous gamble. I seem to recall them being in a pretty tight spot before the Wii. Also, I have to point out that some of the "innovations" you speak of aren't really as big as you make them out to be. Let's take LttP and OoT for example... aside from the fact that it's in a different dimension, what's so different about them really? Sure, OoT's in 3D, but what else? It's not like a game being in 3D was a big thing by that point in time. So what's the innovation?

Now the GC games... yes, those games were all quite good. Thing is, most of them weren't made by Nintendo, nor did most of them stay exclusive to the GC. Since you have issues finding other games on the Wii that attract your attention in the same manner, I would have to say that the third-party devs are to blame here as well. Not that the GC really had much more to choose from compared to the other consoles, either.

You claim to not be a Nintendo fanboy, but... are you sure about that? Nostalgia is one heck of a thing. I'm talking from a purely objective point of view here.

Here's the thing with me though.  I do agree with you, but when it comes to me, I don't remember these great experiences coming out every other month, or even every 3-4 months.  I'm probably not as hardcore a gamer as most are in here, but I honestly don't remember games that I truly truly loved coming out that fast, or in a row, somewhat.

I'm not saying this is true of all gamers, but one thing I've noticed in my years since the internet came about is that gamers in general are just getting more and more impatient.  Back in my day, we had to wait for Nintendo Power or some other magazine to come out once a month before finding out the latest game info.  Now though, information is instant and so fluid that game companies can't even keep any real secrets anymore.  Through a licensing copyright, the rumor train, hype, and possibly downfall can immediately start up.  With Nintendo right now, they have 3 games coming out that I know about that I definitely want more than any other.  With Microsoft, they have Halo Reach (which has JEEP ACTION), and with Sony, they have ModNation Racers, which if it's what I really, REALLY, REALLY, [tornado fang]ing REALLY hope it is, could be my game of the year.

But E3 is coming up soon so we shall see.  Zelda Wii should most likely be shown, and who knows what else.  Perhaps the Kid Icarus game I want-icus.  Here's hoping anyway.

I'm waiting for info on Golden Sun DS.

Here's a good example of how much crap there is compared to quality on Nintendo handhelds (best example I can come up with): In the entirety of the Game Boy Advance's lifespan, approximately 2800 ROMs were ripped. Which for the uninitiated means that even though there are different languages and updates of the same games in that list, that's how many were released. In the 5 or so years the Nintendo DS has been out, upwards of 4900 ROMs have been ripped. Same principle, but it just goes to show that even innovative hardware can have a lot of crappy games on it. What's worse is that unlike the GBA which has reached the upper limit, the number of DS roms continues to rise. Yes, the hardware can provide a lot of innovative types of gameplay, but with that comes even more crappy games (for example, all the Imagine! games published by UbiSoft) than before, just because there's a touch screen.

Hopefully that wasn't a pointless rant.
