You're preaching to the choir for me, but I dislike hacking when not necessary.  First of all I want to do things as "legitimately" as possible, secondly it's tedious, and thirdly Rein hates Pokemon.  Pokemon carts carry two 256KB saves as a safeguard against corruption, and Rein can only find one of them (the game alternates), so whether you're hitting the "current" save of the "backup" save is a crapshoot.

One thing I liked about Colosseum: You were actually a renegade from the local evil team.  It's the only time in the series history that you play as an established trainer and not some upstart hugging his mom goodbye.

The other thing would be that the Shadow mechanic encouraged actually raising/bonding with the guys instead of leaving them rot in the PC.  You weren't just trapping animals for an encyclopedia; rather they actually needed your care.  It's a shame they couldn't keep that as a sidequest in future titles; it works great as long as they don't go into overkill (which Gale of Darkness did, necessitating the Purification Chamber and defeating the whole point of purifying through bonding with a trainer).

Personally I want one where you control the little suckers instead of essentially commanding them. You could make a pretty damn good fighting game with the right set-up, like each move being 'equippable' and costing x amount of points to equip so that the game isn't too broken, but each character still able to level up and whatnot. There's enough bi-pedal 'mons to work with it, and even so, you can still have the four legged Pokemon battle somehow.

I don't know it just doesn't seem like fighting game material since you have to capture the pokemon and it's those kinds of games that have to be RPGs like Magination and Dragon Quest Monsters JOKER. 

What you described seems to be similar to the fighting system in Spectrobes, in my opinion and correct me if I'm wrong, but for me and my brother Spectrobes is a bit difficult to play and we didn't have any fun at all.

It almost kinda looks like Lucario.  The body type is similar albiet a little bigger and it's shoulder bands and eyes look like Lucario's as well although yellow.  Of course this is an outragous comparison.
