Sure you can.  We just never do it, cause really, no team on here could beat the COMBINED forces of PB & Ninja Lou.  It'd just be so unfair!

Yeah, Lou didn't have an extra GC Controller, so I decided to try out the Classic Controller for the first time.

Quite so, also, I really don't know why I whiffed so much when I was playing as Mario, but Luigi was so damn fierce. Then there was Lucas.

At long last, my Wii and internet are back under the same roof (complete with brand spankin' new router).  Soon as I wake up Saturday I'm punching in the new connection settings, and getting my butt back into Brawl.

Of course you can play Team Battles. You just have to change that on the options or the thingy at the top-left corner.

Proof of it in my video archives. I had team battles together with Ciel in the past. ^^
