Logic has no place in shonen or Narutoverse.
Quoted for truth.
Also, is it me, or does Madara's plan somewhat resembles the plan of either Charles vi Britannia (for the sake of turning the world into an idyllic place by using super hax powers), or Jedah from Darkstalkers (for saying that "all will become one with me!" and all that...)?
And, does the story of the Rikudo Sage mean that there was no moon before he became it? Figured that I should point that out.
Well, I'm looking forward to Naruto and Sasuke VS 10-tail Madara...IN SPACE!
And that, along with the moon issue that I'm thinking about, makes me think that...
(Warning: Stupid Rant and Theories Alert)
There are actually two moons and people were living on the first one, going into hiding after the sage became the second moon, by making their moon invisible. And when Naruto and Sasuke fight Madara in space, the real kicker is that they end up crashing on the first moon, and the people of the moon decide to attack them with a bunch of rabbit eared Gundams, in their own self defense. The fight is somewhat messy, and the Forth Great Ninja War now involves the people of the moon, who after just barely booting everyone off of their home, go after them and end up fighting the five Elemental Nations, thus starting a new story arc that lasts for over 300 more issues...
Of course, after reading what I have read of manga, I wouldn't be surprised if there were two moons in canon (or at least, the Rikudo Sage just sent himself into the moon as his tomb), or that there really are Moon people or something close to it (after reading that Madara is collecting Biju like their freaking Dragonballs or something, I don't think that my theory is so bad, I might even write a fanfic out of it if Kishimoto doesn't make it canon first...)
Also, about the cows...
Maybe the two are riding on a single "cow", Killer Bee, who kept the ability to transform into a cow-squid thingie from his partner, Hachibi.
