They are mostly used for sprite comics that require overhead view, and I had practice with these. It can be tedious to do RPG sprites, them being more detailed than action games (or in some cases, reversed) and all.

I always thought super deformed RPG sprites (e.g.: FF1-6) were easier because they kinda lack details. Action RPG sprites (Secret of Mana/Evermore) would be harder, no?

Actually, it's more or so because of the simpler design choices, and pretty much can be modified and any time.

Oh look, a monster that hides in the background, this fella has 4,000 HP, and I don't think it will be a quick battle. He moves across the feild, and his hands have 300 HP each, and both eyes have an extra 40 HP. That rounds up to 4,340 HP total, and he begins with the standard "Move and Punch". Later, around 200 HP, he begins to shoot a stream of lasers from his eye. This of course, the only way to hit the eyes, is with a certain weapon, but tricky to aim.

Here's the same monster, finalized. He has two forms, first form teleports around the room and shoots fireballs, and has 2300 HP, fair first form, gets tricky in the second with the HP doubling and an extra move being added to it's movepool.
