Hm, well I think this is an interesting topic. While I know the taboo with it, I don't think that as a whole it should be hated so much. Who hasn't known a kid to dress up like an animal at Halloween? I think the problem is when it is sexual. And again, as someone mentioned, that they want to be the animal or the person and that disturbs some people.

Then again, why is pretending to be someone you aren't so terrible? L.A.R.P.ers, while usually teased, are not so ostracized as the fursuiters. Maybe it's in the way they present themselves? Oh well, anyway on topic...

Taking it as just wearing a costume a full body outfit isn't all that weird really. I see it as an art form, sure, a lot of time and work can go into making a good costume. Homemade costumes, especially one made well and that look like who or whatever they are emulating, can be a testimony to someones true devotion to the art or their fanatic devotion to the series they base it off of.

I think the problem with the... Anime Kigurumi is it? Is the 'creepy factor' of the masks. But really, how can fans of any sort of anime complain? The proportions don't translate well into real life. Of course the fans of the anime kigurumi like it, but for those who don't, I think it is just their mind not liking the transfer between the anime and real life.

Again, just my opinion. I personally like more cosplay-still-human-face. Oh if only I had the money for some catears and a tail. Another boring Halloween for me. *sigh*

yeah. its the masks that are unsettling a bit.

Honestly how can people breath in those things, well other than the fact that the mask is obviously loose.  Anyway I find it creepy but I'm not one to judge.

Well, from experience with wearing full-head masks, breathing in those things is very difficult.  It's best, when wearing those kinds of costumes, to keep strenuous activity to a minimum to keep from overheating.  And take frequent breaks.  Breathing through a straw helps, too.

Other than the High Octane Nightmare Fuel, I probably could think of another reason why most fans would have distaste in these forms of costuming.

It sometimes degrades/berates the character fans like.

Oh, another thing about full-head masks...  If you intend to ever wear one, make sure to wipe down the inside with Lysol prior and after wearing it.  I got sick twice now after wearing a full costume for an extended period of time.  With all that trapped air, sweat, and such, they're a biohazard after a while.

I never would have figured it would take more than just simply putting another head on your head.

But seriously, no one knows any good photos of how costuming is shown? Shown right, that is?

Well, I have posted plenty of pics of my Xenomorph, and that is a full costume.  It includes a full-head mask.  But I'm not sure what type of costuming style you're looking for.

The thing about full costumes is that they are quite difficult to build.  If you don't know what you're doing and/or lack the resources to build such costumes, it can seem like an impossible undertaking.  That and it requires some effort to wear the costume after it's built as they are really hot.  There are many people who can't handle how hot a heavy costume will get, and that may be one of the things that dissuade them from building those costumes.
