Major update!
On 2009/04/06
Been working my ass off for you guys. 8D
After only displaying a very early development build to a close group of friends, I've decided to go out with the early alpha roll-out of the rechristened Image Randomizer Script so everyone can take a look at it and say what you like and don't like, what could be improved and what could be removed. Most of the heavy work has been done behind the curtains, so you wouldn't really notice; but the administration interface has taken a
MAJOR overhaul to make it easier to manage everything. :)
Here are the links for your testing pleasure:
Random image link: http://www.nanatsuyoru.co.cc/avatars/v3.0/index.php/image.png
Random image counter link: http://www.nanatsuyoru.co.cc/avatars/v3.0/info/index.php/image.png
Gallery link: http://www.nanatsuyoru.co.cc/avatars/v3.0/gallery
And the new administration interface: http://www.nanatsuyoru.co.cc/avatars/v3.0/info/login.php
The login page for the new web admin interface is already filled with the default login data so you can go inside immediately and start fooling around. ;)
Lemme know what you guys think; I probably won't be releasing this version to the public until I have at least the configuration editor sorted out, but it's nice to have feedback about what feels right and what doesn't at this point in time.
[spoiler=Original Post]Well, look no further. I have finally found a free hosting provider for those of you that don't have your own, so you can host your own collection of randomly rotating avatars, like the one I'm sporting. :D Thus, inspiration drove me to write a complete tutorial on even the most minimal things of getting, configuring, setting up, and using my Random Avatar Script of Doom™. :)
Beware though, as it's a bit of a lengthy read, for it covers every single aspect of the script, including, but not limited to, configuration, signing up for and setting up an account at the hosting provider, and testing each and every function of the script, among other things. :O

But wait, DZ. Do you really think these people are ready for the glory of Random Avatars? I mean, can they see why kids love Cinnamon Toast Crunch? 8D
TL;DR
Just kidding. <3

Whoops, my bad -- reuploaded now. Apparently the upload got broken by a router reset. -_- It's fixed now. :) Thanks for the heads-up.
PPPerrrffecctt.. once I score enough images, I will make my own. HA!
Huzzah! =D At last, I can have an image rotation service that doesn't display red X's!
im having trouble with the signature. in your tut, you said to add /info/ right? done, yet the userbar doesnt show up.
What's the complete link to the /info/ folder in your account?

naw naw, im having issues with 110mb.com. so im using DZ's tut with another host.

you mean,
http://www.flame.byethost17.com/info/
?
You aren't even looking at my post. :'(
Add index.php to your link.
http://flame-g102.110mb.com/info/index.php
Place it in a IMG tag.

EDIT: You seem to miss something...
http://flame.byethost17.com/
The avatar is showing...
Did you make a signature userbar to begin with? And did you put it in the folder called info?
thats still not the problem. in the tut, when it gives what to type to see the userbar, I do it, yet it doesnt show up.
also, yes I did both.
Ah, the gallery is working tho (http://flame.byethost17.com/gallery/)... >U<
it is, but if if /info draws up a blank, then I cant go to the login screen either. ive tried.
also,
(http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa215/I_am_X2007/signature.png)
;_;
It might have something to do with file and folder permissions. Did you do absolutely EVERYTHING as demonstrated in my tutorial? If you don't hand out the proper access permissions for the /info/ folder, it might become invisible to visitors.
yeah. I did.
EDIT: hmmm tried adding signature.png after the info/
it says
The image http://www.flame.byethost17.com/info/signature.png cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.
ok, so fo some reason, there were 3 files missing for the info folder on the host. weird. thats done with, and I can log in. yet I still dont see my userbar.
The image may be damaged or otherwise corrupted then. Try uploading signature.png again.
k. sig is there now. weird. :\ thanks for all the help guys.
I guess we can't view all of Flame's avatars by clicking on his bar?
and I see DZ is doing another rotation. :(
Type-Moon week, kiddo. Type-Moon week.
If everyone's using avatar randomization, then there's nothing special about it anymore. In the end, it'll be guys like me who use just one avatar at a time who'll become the minority. Is this the new form of E-[ray splasher]/tits comparison these days? >_> Also, isn't the whole randomization a strain for the server?
That was my plan all along.

Ever heard of "sharing the wealth"? Besides, it's something cool I made, and I like to think people like the stuff I make. And the easiest way to check this is to see how many people are using it. :P

When have I ever spoken to the contrary? Besides, it's not like anybody can make a tightly themed set like mine and get to the insane amounts I have overnight. :P

Not really. My script is extremely optimized, and only does two file accesses: executing the randomization script, and picking/outputting an image from the pool. Since the image pool is kept as a data count by the server, there's little (if any) strain when counting the files. :)

its for folks who change their avatars every week cuz they have so many pics they want to have as avatars. that way they can have them ALL as avatars.

Wait a minute, didn't you use a Saber rotator a while back? I miss that rotator too. A lot of kick ass art in there!
yknow, rotators are maing the caption the previous avatar game really difficult XD
No, not really. I've seen everyone have captioned the (current displayed) avatars just fine. ^^

Yep, just add "The previous/current avatar is about," and then'll be fine. I do it too. ^^

It's as simple as grabbing a screen of the avatar you want to caption. Or even better, go to the owner's gallery and link to that specific entry. :P
huh... didnt think bout that last one...

I think it makes it more fun. You can look at the person's gallery, or not, and try to guess what avatar said person was captioning.
I love guessing.
Guessing is fun. XD
How come my rotator is broken, DZ. :'( It doesn't show up anymore.
Huh?
It's showing just fine Nobo.

It doesn't for me... It shows up for like half a second and then disappears.
Hmm...
Sometimes the server can get pretty busy.
So, if it's still like this a few hours from now, then...

Edit: nvm.
QuoteHi there,
Thank you for hosting your website with us for free!
Every free hosting account has a monthly bandwidth or CPU limit to prevent a single website from consuming to much server resource. You can check your monthly bandwidth or CPU usage in the statistics module in your VistaPanel.
Your website has just reached the bandwidth or CPU limit provided with your free hosting account. We suggest this is due to the success of your website and we acknowledge your website is very popular!
Unfortunately we need to disable accounts that reach their hosting quotas, which unfortunately has meant your site has had to become suspended.
Your monthly bandwidth or CPU quota will be automatically reset on the 1st of each month and your website will then be accessible again.
We highly suggest you should upgrade to a premium account, ran on faster servers than free hosting with many more features. It has no CPU limits and much larger bandwidth limits, ideal for your high usage website! You get hundreds of extra features and we give away a free domain name with every order.
I give up.
One way to solve that? Standardize the size of your avatars, and turn them all into low-size files (JPG or GIF; PNG, if the image has lots of colors, will have a hefty size). That should solve your problem.
theyre all Jpeg... and most of them are 100 by 100...
At how many other places are you using the avatars as well? And I said ALL of them, not just "most".
well, about... 3 other places...
also, I say Most because theres about 2 or 3 pics that are a larger size.
Hmm... That's weird, that shouldn't be happening. I don't have much time right now, but tomorrow I'll go over your gallery and let you know what images should be resaved into smaller sizes, what images should be physically resized, and which can stay so you reduce your bandwidth consumption.
I stopped using it on Gaia, and now it works again... huh...
HOLY [tornado fang], you were using it on Gaia? No wonder your bandwidth limit got eaten, man. -_- You'd need a host for Gaia ALONE, with the amount of traffic that place has and the amount of bandwidth it consumes.
Yeah. I realized that Gaia had the problem. when I stopped using it there, it went back to normal. I don't use it there anymore. 8D

Not to necro, but-
Is there any way to prevent stretching of the avatars on other forums? ive noticed that it tends to happen. for example, at X9.com, it stretches out images with a small width or length instead of resizing them to look the way they should, but in the new MMN forum, it outright takes them all and stretches them to the max avatar size of 200x200.
