Amongst other non-ludological things, concept art for an "interactive game" called "Epic Mickey."
Seems to lend some credibility to that story from late last year about a Warren Spector-developed, steampunk-themed title of the same name. I really, really, really hope this is being fully realized, or I'll be very sad.

You know, as much as I hate playing revisionist, I think I'm slowly starting to warm up to this idea, emphasis on slowly. It just all looked very jarring and unreal for a bit until I went over to GAF and saw more images that weren't a part of the set Jazz posted. This and the details slowly coming in about it being a platformer and how the team, Disney's first serious game developers, wants it to "rival Mario" are also kinda making it hard for me to not try and be open to the changes.
That however still doesn't make that villian face Edritch Monstrosity any less frightening though. XD

Disney has announced to the press that they will be announcing a new "iconic" video game very soon. In the latest Game informer issue there was an Ad by Disney that also revealed that "something epic" was coming.
But will it be another kingdom hearts game? No, probably not. A few months ago, concept art for a game called "Epic Mickey" was leaked. The game looks very dark, twisted and insane, and it actually looks, well... epic! It takes place in a steam-punk setting and is based on the strange imagination of Walt Disney.
The game will be a Wii exclusive and gamers will use the Wii remote to "paint, etch, and erase whole and parts of levels".
Concept Art in video form:
Please note: This is not a trailer for the game. It's just the concept-art compiled together. The storyline mentioned in the clip of Mickey mouse "committing suicide" is merely a guess at the storyline based on an old idea by Walt Disney. The storyline has not been confirmed yet. [/paste]

true, but I do not think that it is going to be what everyone thinks it will. the guy who drew that art, (disney didnt draw them that guy did, their on his website) probably had that idea for epic mickey, maybe he just decided to draw it, who knows, but this is NOT going to sell well, and if anything, will cause a big uproar over misleading chidren into buying a "horror" product based on the fact that it says it has disney charactes on it.
(Becase we all know that A LOT of parents dont check the rating, or even WHAT the game says it contains, but the kid says disney i want! and the mom buys it. then when they pay the price, the company is at fault.)
mm. Tim burton disney is fine, it can work out in the end. but thats just about the limit for "classic" disney characters.
Honestly, who knows if it'd sell well or not, I know that many people would buy it if only out of morbid curiosity to see how they "corrupted" the Disney universe.
Except Disney's main audience is children. Little kids. The adult side of the market is relatively small when compared to the target audience.

Probably a better reinforcement to Tai's idea, a lot of people grew up with Disney, and seeing Disney somehow [twin slasher] that childhood memory and turn it into some sort of demonic force of insanity may be all they need to get this thing to sell.
Yeah, but it's not like this game is in any way gonna be targeted at little kids, not if the people at Disney have anything resembling a brain at least.
I do remember posting quite a bit about this subject and how the art isn't indicative of the final product at all in this thread before. Let me dig it up and shed some light on this craziness.
EDIT: Looks like I didn't. Ah well, story time! This art for all intents and purposes was meant to be a sort of training exercise for the dev team's artists to see how far they could twist and churn the "spirit" of Disney's art and iconicism before it veered off into being unfriendly, or just plain not Disney like. The reason for this all was to make sure that the artists were up to scratch before employing them and continuing the development on the game.
Now what happened in the long run was that a few members of the team who had undergone this experiment had been released from the team while work on the game was still underway. In their transferrence though, they (for reasons unknown) decided to leak the work they had done, leading to the public getting ahold of it and the media and publicity the art work has been getting.
So what you're saying is, the artwork was leaked by some guys who aren't on the project anymore, while some of the official stuff got mixed in as well, right?
Basically.

M<y only fear is that Disney file a lawsuit or troll WArren by sending C&D on this game, it looks awesome and disturbing.
But Warren Spector is the head of a Disney owned and sanctioned development house...
Those weird steampunk zombie Mickey and Goofey could be enemies, like, maybe created, as in, not the real Goofy.
also, the revenge from forgotten chars makes sense, what with that pic of that giant bottle of paint thinner and all the Black and white characters strewn about.
We'll find out soon enough, supposedly it's going to make it's grand reveal through Game Informer in the next month's issue. I don't know what they'll say exactly, but odds are it'll be a giant interview, a couple hints dropped, a new picture revealed, and then us being told that we're going to have to wait until the summer to get a teaser.
Personally, I think it might be the forgotten characters gone bad, creating this twisted evil world, and you play as Mickey and have to stop it. It mentioned something about erasing the levels and stuff. I noticed that theme in the scenery... Paint brushes, tubes, and that God damn "paint thinner" bottle. maybe your job as mickey is to erase the conquered levels and remake them into the pretty happy stuff we normally see?
Maybe that Goofy and creepy robot with the Mickey ears aren't the real deals but some kind of by product of the twisted world.
Or, maybe thy are, and you make them normal again after you beat them, or after whatever. after you redraw them.
This game concept with just the minimal info and concept art we have, could still go MANY ways.
To add yet another possible story rumor about the game, here's a copy/paste from a post on the thread over at FC: "a few years back when Disney finally got Oswald the Lucky Rabbit back Bob Iger had said in an interview he'd like to see a game in which some kind of time discrepincy happens and Disney never actually lost Oswald to Universal and therefore Mickey Mouse never comes to fame. The game would be all about the world of Disney becoming totally messed up without Mickey." They mentioned that they wonder if it's that game, so at least they weren't saying that they knew the story and whatnot.
So, to update the rumor story list, we have:
A. Mickey Mouse commits suicide
B. Old cartoons appear to get revenge on Mickey
C. Let's do the Time Warp again! Mickey was never created.
Outside of that, all we DO know is that:
level editing is part of the game,
it's a platformer
it looks freaky as hell.

QuoteSpoiler Alert: "Epic" November Issue Revealed
The rumors have been flying for months. From the outrageous (some actually thought we were bought by Disney, which was quite funny), to the right on (our forums pieced together all the clues from the last issue), the time has come to lay all rumors to rest. The November cover is indeed, Disney Epic Mickey, coming exclusively to the Nintendo Wii from Junction Point and Disney Interactive Studios.
This issue is the first of our highly anticipated redesign that subscribers should be receiving around October 12th.
There are a number of other highlights, including a Skate 3 first-look, an in-depth, seven-page report on the relationship between Hollywood and video games, interviews with executives from all three console manufacturers, and much, much more.
But the biggest news is our expanded coverage online that is available to all gameinformer.com visitors. Starting at 4PM CST today we will unveil the first companion piece to the magazine: an exclusive video interview with Warren Spector about his relationship with Mickey Mouse, including a portion of his giant Disney memorabilia collection that is housed at Junction Point. We will also have a photo-blog chronicling many of the outstanding pieces in his collection hitting at the same time.
This is just the beginning of our month of Mickey madness that will unfold over the next three plus weeks. So be sure to watch our Disney Epic Mickey landing page over the following month.
We don't want to spoil what's to come, but we have some amazing things in store, including screenshots, animations, and tons of concept art and music.
Watch for the issue in your mailbox over the coming weeks and make sure to come to gameinformer.com for the latest updates and news.
Oh yeah, and one last thing. All GI covers from here on out will feature a full wrap-around cover. Here is the Mickey cover in all its glory. The best part, and the reason we switched to these, is that the subscriber address label and the UPC will be on the back so it no longer clashes with our wonderful cover art.

Well, now, the idea that these hellish creations came from Maleficent, Hades, etc. is much, much better.
I think that it needs to be even more basic a style, and less ghoulish, than that magazine cover art depicts.
I don't know it looks quite ghoulish to me but then again I am not an artist so I wouldn't know.

That's right, it already does, but it shouldn't be that way. Go too artsy, and your game goes the way of Muramasa and Odin Sphere. But go too basic, in this case, and become a commercialized churn out.
It needs a good, happy medium where it can be a stylish, but defined game where your platforms, hitboxes, and objectives are crystal clear; certainly every little bit helps in a world such as THAT.
Way to say a whole lotta nothing, Warren. BOOOOOOO! GET OFF THE STAGE!
Nah, jk. Boy...that's a scary thought, gaming only being 30 years old. No wonder we're such pros; most of us have probably been gaming from its public day one, or something very close. Granted, we weren't there to pioneer it like Atari or Nintendo's guys, but look at the "We can rebuild them; we have the ideas" thread, or the countless Sonic fans who know what they want.

It seems like nothing new is known, but if the video proves me wrong, then just wait until I can watch it and I'll edit this accordingly <.<

Yeah, that's from the Disney event they're having there on that day. Apparently, this game is going to usher in something of a revolution in terms of Disney. Alos, there's a great article out now on the history of Mickey Mouse that I think you all should read from Game Informer. It kinda sheds some new light on what the guys are trying to do now, and after reading it, I'm now completely convinced that they'll do it well.
Well It's Disney. They are a very good bunch. Im sure they'll do fine.
A revolution, eh? Less focus on popstars-of-the-minute and more on quality entertainment, and more films based on lores instead of sequels?
Somehow, I doubt it.
Same here. This is going to be a one time deal.
Until they make a sequel to this.
Speaking of Disney, I watched Enchanted last night. Holy [tornado fang], that movie was brilliant.

Yknow what show was good? House of mouse. I miss that show.
I was surprised to see a brief arc including Max and Roxanne revisited.

Yeah, I remember that! owob
Strangely enough though, I wonder why they never used PJ. Or at least, I never saw any eps with him on it.

We saw a mother for the little boy back then. It could have been her. Some also suggest it's Clarabelle Cow. >U<

Different "continuity". 8D
Back in those days, that son of Goofy was "Goofy Jr". The one that we know and love, circa Goof Troop, was the one that got the Max moniker.
It's like how "Pete Jr" was first showcased in one Donald Duck short, but that was a completely different character from PJ.

The concept art looks awesome, I love the robot enemy with Hades face :)
Damn awesome drawing skill there!
I think I figured out what Beetleworx is exactly; it's the minion of the big bad that makes it form through various Disney characters. That explains demon-faced Mickey and the Eldrich Abomination that had Tigger, Goofy, Donald, and Hook (and others) faces all over it and the Croc for a hand, as well as the unknown Disney car and Hades-faced thing seen in the video. It may be more specie like, sort of like the Heartless in Kingdom Hearts.

As Game Informer has been hyping for weeks now, their latest issue features a huge spread on Epic Mickey. You get your first look at in-game screens and brand-new art, as well as Mickey's redesign, and a host of other characters. Obviously, I cannot show you that here, but thanks to Hero of Legend, I can give you the first details!
- Mickey's appearance is much, much closer to his original debut style
- Disney was the one to approach Spector
- Spector originally was against the idea of creating a Mickey game, because he said that he didn't do kids games
- Spector changed his mind when Disney said that they were looking for someone to 'reinvigorate' Mickey
- Disney had to get back the rights to Oswald before he could be used in this game
- the sorcerer Yensid creates a pen-and-paper world for his forgotten creations, which is where Oswald lives
- this world is similar to Walt Disney World
- Mickey enters this world through a magic mirror, and accidentally spills paint and paint thinner on the drawing of this world. Mickey escapes before Yensid finds out.
- The spill that Mickey caused ends up turning the drawing into a twisted version of what was originally created.
- the Phantom Blot ends up taking over this world
- many years later, after Mickey becomes successful, he re-enters the mirror and sees what has happened to the world. The Phantom Blot drags Mickey into the world, which is where your adventure begins
- use the Wiimote to paint in buildings, platforms and more
- swipe away enemies with the Wiimote when using paint thinner
- create/destroy the world as you go along
- Junction Point took hundreds of photos while at Disney World in order to capture the essence of the park, and translate ideas into the game
- play the game as you like, either destroying everything in sight, or taking the hero's route. It's completely up to you, and you can mix-and-match play styles
- Gremlin Village is reminiscent of 'It's a Small World'
- Mickey's appearance and stance will change based on the way you play the game
- trade some items for health
- Pete returns, and at one point attacks you with a huge zepplin
- Donald Duck animatronic pieces are scattered throughout one portion of the game. Collect them to put him back together.
- Spector wants this game to scare kids, in some ways
- the game will also have funny parts
- Spector calls the game world's visuals 'the bastard child of Tim Burton and Disney'
- elements of platforming, exploration and role-playing
- go into the inner-workings of some levels and rides
- visit the gears and mechanics underneath the 'It's a Small World' ride, complete with an eerie re-imagining of the music
- enter movie screens to move from in-game island to island
- movie screen transitions put you into a 2d world, where you'll revisit some of Mickey's old cartoons
- find sketches, and bring them to life with your paintbrush
- sketches can be activated to give you new powers (clock sketch to slow time, TV sketch to distract enemies, and more)
- collect 'E-Tickets' to enter rides, and use as a form of currency to buy power-ups
- Jim Dooley 'Pushing Daises' is doing the soundtrack
Warren Spector on Mickey
"I want him to be a hero...and I want to remind him that it's okay to behave badly."
Warren on Oswald
"All he really wants is to be loved by Walt Disney. In the end, the Blot won the war and pushed Oswald into hiding and exile."
Warren on the Gremlins
"The Gremlins are the only forces of good in the world that can continue to fight against the Blot.
Warren on the Bunny Kids
"These are going to be the breakout stars of the game. Mark my words."
Warren on the Buddies (Donald, Goofy, ect.)
"Oswald is trying to recreate Mickey's life, so he has the Mad Doctor build these animatronic versions of his buddies."
Warren on the Mad Doctor
"He's from an early 30's cartoon that is pretty swell."
Warren on the Phantom Blot
"The Phantom Blot has been a consistent villain since 1939. He's just been lame."
Warren on the Blotlings
"They're the popcorn unit. You need something that the player can just swat away. They're supposed to be funny, silly and stupid."
Warren on the Beetleworx
"In order to deal with these guys, you have to erase their painted bits to get to the vulnerable inert spots underneath."

Ah, so it's not as dark as I expected.
But damn, that Donald would give me nightmares!
And the nod to classic Mickey is also a plus!
Ah! the gameplay looks and sounds fun.. But then again, what would happen if Bugs Bunny finds out that Oswald's coming back? o~O
I'm loving this semi-twisted reality. A world run on corruption, no wonder the mirror was never accessable in KH2, or any mention whatsoever. It seems that they are giving Oswald a second chance.

now the eerie robo zombie characters makes SO much more sense.
I will get this, it seems so new and fascinating to even look at, plus the paintbrush stuff sounds awesome.
So what exactly are the Beetleworx? Are they malgamanations of various Disney characters and bits?
I also kinda regret looking at the scans, but hopefully the game won't disappoint and something big is in the game that isn't being said.

They seem to only have Hades head from what I can tell... they were made by the mad scientist to "fix" the world. you have to erase their exteriors to attack their interiors.
There's a Dumbo one too in the concept art, so I think it's safe to say that they differ from level to level.
well we'll see then I guess...
I think this game is doing a good job of commercially presenting the early concepts of this game. If it stayed true to the concept art, even for fans of the art style, there just wouldn't be much of a buying audience because the focus is solely on the art.
And not the story and gameplay.
Which is what this all adds.
And it's really freakin' awesome.
Yeah, I have to say it's certainly not as dark as I expected, but it's still pretty heavy for a Disney game. I was sort of hoping that Oswald was a villain at first, but just wanted a rather meager goal and ended up being used by Phantom Blot who wanted control over everything. Hopefully there's more to it than that, but I guess we'll have to wait and see.
I'm thinking there's a good chance of seeing this game sometime in Jan. 2011; just from the screenshots alone it seems like a [parasitic bomb]-ton of stuff was done in between the leak and now, so we can probably expect them to keep working through E3, put up a teaser/trailer for it by then, and then announce the release date past July.
The concept art looked retarded.
Now it just looks boring.

Good music, creepy Disney characters and most of all, it is a game. Yeah, this is going to be awesome. I had to admit I didn't believe Disney was going to allow this and I thought it was going to be a lttile creepier to be honest but overall the mood of the game is dark and depressing and I hope to play it. Also, I wonder if it is deconstruction of Disney showing the darker side of Disney that you don't normally see or it is just some horror game with Disney characters in it.

It seems less dark than what the leaked art had shown. It seemed like the original Beetleworx were creatures straight from the depths of Hell done by Disney. Now they seem more comical than down-right terrifying.
They had crude peeling flesh. and faces in random areas.
Yeah. they looked creepy. then there was the animatronic pals. they looked like some manner of half robot Zombies. Now, they still do- But we know they're animatronics now.

Also, Warren, how hard is it to go to Capcom and say, "Hey, how would you like a Kingdom Hearts-level business deal?"
Swear to Gozalyn, we'd have a Duck Tales game for the DS within the year.
PLAYABLE GIZMO DUCK & DARKWING DUCK!
Indeed, I think Warren would have to pitch more than just the Duck Tales show; it'd be an all-out duck game, Donald, Scrooge, Darkwing, Gizmo, all of 'em!
And Scrooge and Darkwing both have rivals, so there's plenty of room for some TRULY epic boss battles!

QuoteRemember when some crazy looking concept art for Epic Mickey leaked? The kind of art that showed off tanks modeled after the Seven Dwarves in Snow White or a giant whale with Spaceship Earth on its back? Some of you might feel a bit disappointed that the official screenshots released to date don't quite reflect on that crazy steampunk aesthetic, and during an interview, I asked Warren Spector to discuss the disparity between the leaked art and the official art today.
He answers, "There are a couple aspects to that. I think I've mentioned before, that I'm a big believer in finding out where the line is by pushing past it. There are lines that are on every project; every project exists in a creative box. For most of my games, I create that box and the team has to sort of work within it. In this case, there's a creative box that I create, and there's the creative box that Disney overlays on that. I know where my lines are, but I don't know where Disney's are. I had a lot of stuff generated that was very specifically designed to be provocative and to cross that line. I know it's too far -- or is it? You tell me. So it forces a confrontation or a decision. Some of what you saw was beyond the line, and so I learned something from it. Some of it was early design ideas that are no longer relevant. Some of it is stuff that's still in the game, and I'm not saying what."
http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3176700
I'm sure that still won't shut people up though.
[tornado fang] Spector is so goddamned awesome. That thought process is quite a good one to have when testing a team for what kind and caliber of development they are capable of.

Intresting, I'd like to see how it plays out when it happens.
ONE MOVIE. in a sea of CGI. its their "return" to it, but that doesnt mean they are willing to make more. They could just fart out maybe 2 more and call it a day.
It's a start at least, and it could go both ways.

Im just going to drop these here. Weve all probably seen em, but they belong in the topic, since we can see some gameplay vids at work here, (as well as commentary from Spector himself) Discuss?
As far as I can see, Spector is a VERY conservative Disney fan. Meaning, aside from the sheer massive fanboyism he has for classic Mickey and classic Disney cartoon shorts, he aims to make this game as freaking "true-to-origin" as ever.
...I just hope we get to see some Zé Carioca around. He'd be an awesome character to have.

Really loving the look of this game, but i'm still a little unsure about the gameplay itself.
Suddenly I think the game might actually be good.
I was thinking that previously. But this is a nice reminder of why I was interested.
I love all the little nods to the actual Mickey mouse cartoons in this intro.
Also I don't know if I should feel good or bad that I know the last two cartoons shown in the calendar.
I recognized several of them.
I recognized all of them... makes me feel old. Git offa mah lawn!
Warren Spector KNOWS his old-school Mickey. And I like the fact that the voice remains the same, but without actually saying anything to make it annoying. Mickey's the one cartoon character I'd like to keep silent.

Since all of his latest roles (and yes, even Kingdom Hearts) have pretty much contributed nothing whatsoever to any kind of more enriching personality or playful character, and this game actually aims to bring him back to his origins and make him TRULY good and unique again, making him silent is pretty much the very best thing they could have done.

For once, I don't hate to admit that he's right. Mickey was way better as a silent character. Not that I found his voice annoying or anything, but he's the kind of guy that shouldn't say a word.
Sorry, but I like Mickey's voice, mainly because I like making jokes using it. Mickey cursing is funny to me! 8D

So here's your answer.
The game gets very few details, but the ones it gets, I like.
Just one thing... doesn't the game LOOK a bit... amateur-ish... at parts? I mean, the concept and everything is awesome, but on the graphical level, they don't seem to be doing much, and those platforming parts looked charming but not really very well done. In terms of gameplay, platform positioning, and the way Mickey moves.
I might be nitpicking ALOT, and seeing as this is my most expected upcoming game for the Wii, I'm not badmouthing it or anything, but I'd really like it if they improved certain small elements.
Spoony (http://spoonyexperiment.com/2010/09/11/pax-coverage-disney-lineup/) notes it as solid but generic.

Yeah. I'd have to agree with you on this one. Perhaps work a bit more on the details and such. Otherwise, it's good.

Odd, I just saw an ad on TV today saying December (only caught the end of it though). Either it got moved a little or it's the usual case of us Mexicans getting screwed over like always...hard to tell.
Speaking of that, there's still months left until it releases and this is already getting international advertising on TV, they really are going all out.
