This topic is about the whole "Gargoyle's Quest / Ghosts 'n Goblins" series.

Starting with one of the cooler games.

Demon's Crest
(Super Nintendo)
Japan: 1994.10.21 (Demon's Blazon: Makai-Mura Monshou Hen)
USA: 1994
Europe: 1994

A long time has passed in the Ghoul Kingdom after Firebrand's defeat at the
hands of Phalanx. After being imprisoned inside the Colosseum and being forced
to fight for his life time and time again, the red demon escapes to bring
vengeance upon the one who cast him down so long ago...

Fire Power - This is Firebrand's regular fire power. This is regular Firebrand, the weakest of them all. He has the ability to use the Fire Powers mentioned below.
* Fire (ファイアー): Low damage, can light torches.
* Buster (バスター): Medium damage, can destroy blocks. It has very fast fire rate, so this is essential to use early in the game.
* Tornado (トルネード): Low damage, creates platforms in the shape of small tornados.
* Claw (クロー): Medium damage, lets you climb spiked walls.
* D.Fire (D.ファイアー): High damage, essential against strong enemies.

Blazon/Crest Power - These gives Firebrand different abilities depending on what you equip.
* G.Arremer (G.アリーマー): This lets you destroy objects by tackling them. It spits a shot that trails across the floor. Called Ground Gargoyle in english versions.
* A.Arremer (A.アリーマー): Lets you fly higher by pressing A and it cuts vines. Called Aerial Gargoyle in english versions.
* T.Arremer (T.アリーマー): The ability to swim underwater. Model Lx is a copycat for "stealing" this ability for Rockman ZX (>:3). Called Tidal Gargoyle in english versions.
* L.Arremer (L.アリーマー): It gives lots of damage to enemies and has double life meter. Also, it takes half damage. Called Legendary Gargoyle in english versions.
* U.Arremer (U.アリーマー): This has all abilities mentioned above. Called Ultimate Gargoyle in english versions.

Talisman - These are auto-effect equipments that activates once you wear them.
* Crown (クラウン): Higher chance of enemies/pots dropping GP/Zam (money).
* Skull (スカル): Higher chance of enemies/pots dropping health.
* Armor (アーマー): Damage taken is halved.
* Fang (ファング): You deal more damage.
* Hand (ハンド): Lets you shoot more fire on-screen.

Spells - You store these in the 5 Vellums (ベラム) you've collected in the game. Some of these aren't worth using much though.
* Shadow (シャドー) - 10 Zam/GP: Increases defense.
* Hold (ホールド) - 20 Zam/GP: Freezes enemies.
* Imp (インプ) - 25 Zam/GP + 1 Zam/GP each second: Summons an imp to fight for him, for a fee.
* Shock (ショック) - 50 Zam/GP: Cause earthquake.
* Death (デス) - 80 Zam/GP: Summons Death. Clears the screen from enemies and damages bosses.

Potion - You store these in the 5 pots (ポット) you've collected in the game. Some of these are too expensive and aren't worth using much though.
* Mercury (マーキュリー) - 6 Zam/GP: Teleports you back to the beginning of a level.
* Sulfur (サルファー) - 10 Zam/GP: Teleports you to the world map.
* Herb (ハーブ) - 25 Zam/GP: Restores five health.
* Elixir (エリクサー) - 100 Zam/GP: Resurrects you with four health.
* Mandrake (マンドレイク) - 140 Zam/GP: Restores you to full health. Called Ginseng in english versions.

More games should show up soon. Discuss!

Hard as rock series. But damn awesome. With great atmosphere and ambiente.

Great and tight controls and one of the coolest protagonists from any videogame up to date.

This series too, deserves a revival.

Whatever the hell is Capcom thinking?

Firebrand was also mentioned in BOTH Mario & Luigi RPG games, 1&2. ^^

So, Demon's Crest is a seprate tale for Ghosts n' Goblins? neat.

One mention of LEGENDS and everyone goes batshit.  :\

Yep, every time when someone mentions that game people get energized for an apparent reason whatsoever. It's like this everywhere else, trust me.

It got really messy to find my sprite and comic topic, so it's in my sig.

Red Arremer shows up in pretty much every GnG game, and is a boss in SNK vs. Capcom: SVC Chaos.

The Ghoul Realm is part of the world/the underworld that Arthur travels into to save the princess.

Also, I think it has been stated that Firebrand travelled to the human world once or twice.

That and he's the only Red Arremer with a name. And he's most probably the strongest demon in the netherrealm.

Strong enough to be honored by Bowser. (Play both RPGs, you know why)

Anyway, I hope this comes for the VC.

Didn't Sub Tank manage to do a 3 Health Playthrough on DC?

I think he did. I could never pull that off.

Hmm, interesting stuff here. Added to my Now Playing backlog... Now. 8)

Close.  I killed Phalanx with normal Firebrand, no items or armors.

Acid

Sub Tank

The whole battle.  All 3 forms.

I thought I was pretty good until I saw a youtube video of someone beating the Dark Demon with normal Firebrand.  I can barely do that as Ultimate.

Acid

Dark Demon plays in a different league.

Holy [parasitic bomb] and WHAT a league.

Sub Tank

I'm pretty sure he doesn't even have a real boss pattern, unless you count "fucks you up" as a pattern.

Acid

I think that's legit. I mean as far as old Capcom games go.

I believe Legendary is like Fire Gargoyle with Demon Fire + half damage item (except you can have half damage item on top of legendary for 3x? 4x? the health), and a cool sprite sheet. Which Ultimate is a recolour of...
also worth mentioning, Tidal is the only form capable of even touching water without taking damage and has an explosive shot underwater

Da Dood

Beating Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts is one of my greatest videogame life accomplishments. :D

I like the whole Firebrand trilogy a lot. I even tried to connect the three games' storyline when my fandom for that went up the roof.

Guys, please let me know when did Gwen Stacy getting retroactively impregnated with Goblin Twins solve any contradiction whatsoever and didn't create a whole set of new ones. TTFN

Help me here... Wasn't the NES one remade for the Gameboy? Even harder than the original, with two new areas?

VixyNyan

Yea that's right. They released NES Gargoyle's Quest II on Game Boy, only in Japan.

only in Japan.

Should not prove to be an obstacle. The Firebrand trilogy is not really heavy on text.

They're extremely different gameplay wise. DC is slow as a rock (fits the game though), whereas  MMZX is fast paced.
Both have the same feeling though. They exploration is not as deep as Metroid's, but it's there. Some Stage layout feels familar. Getting morpg skills from bosses is a feature of both games too.

It's... interesting.

Fix'd

I never heard that the Game Boy version would have additional areas. The Demon Darkness was one of my favorite NES titles discovered late (circa '98 when I played it on a friend's NES), I'm gonna look into that.

And since it's just Japanese, who knows if there'll be any differences script-wise or something to confirm my hunches regarding how GQII - DC - GQ connect.

I only read that. A swamp and some ice cavern (with slippery floor) I think.

Need to back up on that.
