Oh, she was absolutely the main character. Max is just our vessel. We are seeing the situation and the world through his eyes, but she is totally the primary protagonist of the story. That's what makes it so fantastic. Max is just the Road Warrior at this point, helping out when he can after already going insane. She's the hero. He just briefly stopped being solely just a survivor to remember that he helps out righteous causes.
