Click on where it say Smash in the character select screen (touch screen) and you should see options to change items. Set them to all off/none

And yeah that stage changes, including the blast zones (the map boundary that determines death). They drew closer while you were near it.

While I don't care about items I really don't like Hammers and the Home Run Bat, and not just because I suck at using said Home Run Bat. Lip Stick is fun, if I ever get to unlocking Peach's custom moves I'm going to make her bloom flowers with her ass.
