Ah, how many times I saw this card combined with Platinum Angel. That's when I realised MtG had an ever-increasing number of ridiculous rules.

You mean the alpha toned solid color?

Instead of an opaque image, it's a solid color(often black, but sometimes others). The tone is determined by the alpha layer.

Once you have the image you want, right click the layer, and choose
Add Layer Mask...
Greyscale Copy of Layer
Invert

That's GIMP. From what I remember of CS2, it's about the same.
