Hi everyone, I was referred here by MissVixy, someone I met on YouTube as I was browsing some Mega Man videos.

First, the story:

Anyway, The purpose of this post is to show everyone what I've been working on for the past few months. Some people may know who I am, if they're into a little game called Chrono Trigger. I did the music for a project called Chrono Resurrection, but that's not what this is about.

I've always been a huge Mega Man fan (particularly Mega Man 2 and 3) and when 9 was announced, I was ecstatic. However, I didn't really think about remaking any of the music until I started visiting some YouTube videos. They were good but they just didn't feel like Mega Man style to me. I did a few Mega Man remakes in the past and was slightly familiar with the style, so I thought I'd remake one of the fun ones first. A buddy of mine, mv (Xavier Dang) turned me onto a piece of software another old friend reduz co-created called S3M2NSF. It takes specially made S3M files and converts them to NSF format. So I decided to try it out with my first Mega Man 9 remake.

Flash In The Dark was my first remade song. It was fun, but it was simplistic compared to the other ones. I was still sorta happy with it, but I wanted more of a challenge. So, I took it upon myself to try Something a LOT harder. Then something more fun.

Then, it was like an obsession, I just couldn't stop. I started remaking the Mega Man 2 menu music re-do's, and then the master bosses came on. I really hadn't planned on recreating the full soundtrack, but here it is. Completed..final version, no more updates or revisions. I'm committed to the errors that are still in here (like for instance, the Staff Roll forgetting a couple vibrato effects..I personally don't mind it, it gives it a Mega Man 1 feel)

Download:
NSF/S3M Soundtrack
Video:
YouTube Video Demonstrating Soundtrack

Anyway. So yes, here is the entire NSF soundtrack. I hope you enjoy it. I tried my best to keep the NES Mega Man feel in these NSF files. NSFe with Soundtrack timings are also included, as well as the S3M source files should you have an S3M player. If you DO have an S3M player, make sure you go into the setup and disable interpolation, because that will give it the true NES sound. :)

Enjoy.

Just so I don't forget, a mirror link. 0v0

I loved how accurate every single track was, comparing to the mp3s that I ripped from my CDs and hosted on this link.
Your hearing ability is so amazing. o.o

I noticed your compositions first time when "Maze of Death" was posted. The video was newly uploaded and I was gonna leave the first comment, but youtube didn't process it right. I don't like their handling of special symbols for comments. It breaks so easily.

Anyway, I also went over to give my praise to long time midi-making artist Sivac Drac (also made The Adventures of Bass ROM Hacks) and I saw that SivacD made a couple of MM9 NSFs too. I sent a few comments and SivacD sent a private message about some Wily Stages that I was interested in.

I was happy with how they sounded, I sent a comment, and then you came and posted a message to me, asking me to give my impressions on your own NSF soundtrack. It took a couple of days, but I finally got to you, and summarized some very tiny things that would improve the soundtrack. Now it's just the way I imagined a NSF-recreation would sound like. I'm amazed at genuinely awesome they all sound too. ^.^

I was hoping that Chrono Resurrection would see the light of days. But at least we got Chrono Trigger DS for now. ^^

I was always interested in making my own nsf's for my own game project, and it looks like "S3M2NSF" will do a good work with converting them, so I was wondering, what S3M Tracker do you recommend, both for simplicity and efficiency?

Good to see you on the forum too, no matter how long you're willing to stay. 8D

Vixy, I had no idea you knew about the other videos..that's cool though. Also i didn't know you composed as well..but anyway, S3M2NSF probablyw ouldn't be a good choice. It sucks up memory like nothing else, and it doesn't support macro instrumentation, or repeat patterns to save memory. However if you want to try it, no problem there. :) A good choice for "beginner" tracking work would be Mod Plug Tracker, however I despise it, always have. I've always used Impulse Tracker. Schism Tracker is the Impulse Tracker "clone" for Windows/Mac/etc, since Impulse Tracker is DOS-based. However it has some bugs with S3M (like when you save an S3M, it will always cut off the last sample, or screw up the last few rows of a pattern..which is why I'm using an older version of Schism. ModPlug Tracker might be the best choice for you)

I just found a few more inaccuracies with Wily Stage 2 (the bass in the ending bridge) and the lack of vibrato in the staff roll..Blah. I'm done with it, no more updates! NOooo more. Haha. Gotta move on.

But anyway thanks for the nice comments, I hope everyone else enjoys the music as well. I hope some day these NSFs will find their way in ROM hacks some how..I doubt they will though. But anyways, enjoy all. I haven't truly tracked much in the past few years, but it's nice to see that these Mega Man 9 songs show that I "still have it" I guess. I guess that's what I get for remaking music for the past ..I dunno..15 years. Lol.

The inaccuracies are pretty nitpicky.. I mean I'm only missing about a few notes.. You probably wouldn't notice them unless you were looking for them.

I liked the bass bridge in the ST/360 version. I mean, when I first heard the soundtrack, I wondered how Inti Creates came up with a buzz-tastic sound like that for a bass bridge. My ears liked it. ^^

Well the bridge is the same in the Wii/ST version.. It's just the pulse width modulation selection changed in the Wii version (They're using the 15% pulse width tone instead of the 25% the Soundtrack uses)

Here is the pattern from my S3M at that part:

Notice how the notes retrigger? Also notice how A01 is at the top, telling the S3M to play at the fastest pattern speed S3M is capable of playing back at.. I had to put note velocities of 48, and 32 back and forth because otherwise the NSF would have just played straight notes..at that speed, note cuts in the effects column (the one beside the velocities) don't work, so note cuts would have been impossible. However, because this S3M uses samples, and because the Soundtrack used samples, the tones retrigger their waveform causing more of a pulsing sound. The NES sound chip is only at max 60hz, so there's no way it could have retriggered the tones with cuts in between them ..it's just impossible for that little chip to do it. It could do it at a slower speed, but then the effect is gone. Notice how the S3M better represents the effect though?

In the soundtrack/wii versions, I'm pretty sure the Triangle wasn't playing at that point, however the two channels playing back the notes just didn't have the same impact in the NSF, so I had the Triangle playing notes as well.

Very impressive! Also, I didn't know that the composers of the MM9 OST didn't think the NES could handle what they had in mind. I think they may have underestimated the NES's audio capabilities. I'm still impressed when I play NES games I previously hadn't played before and hear some sweet musical scores.

I ...actually don't know if I want to. Regardless, if you want to create your own multi-NSF with the S3M's, it's pretty simple.

All you have to do is type s3m2nsf <filename1.s3m> <filename2.s3m> etc etc etc ..the order of which your files are posted will create the same order in the NSF.
