Sonic CD is what IHMO call the quintessential CD-based 2D Sonic game. If that sounds too high-phrased to anyone, its because there really is no other Sonic game of its kind. I personally find the time concept ahead of its time as a Sonic game. If I had never played or heard of Sonic CD before during the GEN/MD era, and I was a Saturn owner waiting for a true Sonic game at the time, I would have expected the time concept to have shown up in a Sonic 4. I have no idea if that makes any sense, so don't argue with me. So yeah, basically I would have expected such a concept to arise later in time.

For anyone's enjoyment, or if you've absolutely nothing better to do, which was sort of the case with me. I'd like to show my You Tube PEMNAS playthough in order of how I played it. I personally love this game.

Playlist:
(Part 1) Start Up + Palmtree Panic Zone 1
(Part 2) First Special Stage
(Part 3) Palmtree Panic Zone 2
(Part 4) Second Special Stage
(Part 5) Palmtree Panic Zone 3
(Part 6) Collision Chaos Zone 1
(Part 7) Third Special Stage
(Part 8) Collision Chaos Zone 2
(Part 9) Fourth Special Stage
(Part 10) Collision Chaos Zone 3
(Part 11) Tidal Tempest Zone 1
(Part 12) Fifth Special Stage
(Part 13) Tidal Tempest Zone 2
(Part 14) Sixth Special Stage
(Part 15) Tidal Tempest Zone 3
(Part 16) Quartz Quadrant Zone 1
(Part 17) Quartz Quadrant Zone 2
(Part 18) Seventh AND Final Special Stage
(Part 19) Quartz Quadrant Zone 3
(Part 20) Wacky Workbench Zone 1
(Part 21) Wacky Workbench Zone 2
(Part 22) Wacky Workbench Zone 3
(Part 23) Stardust Speedway Zone 1
(Part 24) Stardust Speedway Zone 2
(Part 25) Stardust Speedway Zone 3
(Part 26) Metallic Madness Zone 1
(Part 27) Metallic Madness Zone 2
(Part 28) Metallic Madness Zone 3 & FINAL FEVER!
(Part 29 / THE END) Cosmic Eternity - Good Ending

The playthrough consists of individual videos, each containing a Zone and a Special Stage between each of them. Also, PEMNAS stands for "PLEASE EXCUSE MY NOOB ASS SKILLS". I invented the term myself. Its created to separate my videos from being called a Speed-Run (its not meant to be one) or a walkthrough. Its really just to show others my average-level game skillz in da game. I know, its probably a stupid little gimmick but I just felt like being creative. Whatever.

FINISHED!! Thanks for watching everyone!!!

You know, as enjoyable as Sonic CD was, I just don't think I enjoy it as much as most people do. I hear it being praised all the time and I just have a hard time seeing why. That's me, though. I always enjoyed S3&K more, personally.

As for the playthrough, should be interesting to see the rest.

Sonic CD was very enjoyable. Perhaps not the most traditional Sonic game but a good one. That and one of the only games to receive a unique OST depending on the region you live on... twice the musical goodness.

Still my favorite Sonic game.  I loved the level design and Time aspect of it so much. Not to mention the feeling of speed & Metal Sonic.

agreed. while S3K is my favorite game of all time, SCD isn't even on the Top 20. i don't like the feel of the game. i don't like the atmosphere. i don't like the time gimmick, either.

and shouldn't this have really gone here?

Ah, my fave Sonic game. How I still luv you so...

To think that Oshima n his crew busted out this game, completely separate from Naka, Yasuhara & the rest at STI, working on Sonic 2. Makes me think only more on the idea, of if Artoon was given the go-head to make a game for once... [/dsi]

Agreed on the Sonic 3 & Knuckles part, my opinions differ on everything else you said though. I loved the dark feel and atmosphere of the game, and I even kinda liked the time gimmick. Honestly it's something I think Sonic games should explore more often. It garnered a much bleaker look while still retaining the awesome Sonic gameplay, not saying it has to be a new look for the series, just a once and while thing. ^_^

Then there's this.

I remember playing CD on the PC, was hard, yet fun. The remixes are always fun to listen too as well.

Workshop/DA/YT/Photobucket なにかんがえてるの!?
So its about ass now huh? EVEN THE ASS HAS 'EXCEEDED'!

One mention of LEGENDS and everyone goes batshit.  :\

Yep, every time when someone mentions that game people get energized for an apparent reason whatsoever. It's like this everywhere else, trust me.

It got really messy to find my sprite and comic topic, so it's in my sig.

Just came in here to say Sonic CD is quintessential Sonic. While I may consider S3&K my favorite Sonic game, Sonic CD is right there next to it.

Also, I fukken love the Aweome Art™, both region soundtracks, & figure-8 Sonic dash. 8)

Also, Quartz Quadrant Zone Past, Present, Good & Bad Future for secret best themes in the game after Stardust Speedway (all versions) in the JP Soundtrack.

If you REALLY must, all you need is Gens and the Sega CD bios files. ^^

But do like I did instead, buy Sonic Gems Collection for the Gamecube. :3

While SGC is a more reasonable and practical choice for those who want to experience Sonic CD, I would really have to suggest otherwise. The original Sega Mega CD versions would offer you the best legitimate experience possible. I say legitimate, because the Sonic CD in SGC is actually the PC version thats ported, and the PC version already had problems of its own, examples include wrong palettes for certain stages, missing visual effects for some stages, terrible debug mode, horribly downgraded sound effects, etc. (On the plus side though, the anime intro and endings look steller thanks to its recompression for the PC release). For the PAL and NA versions of GEMS, only the American soundtrack is available, for those who prefer the JP OST.

Or do what Vixy suggests, emulate Sonic CD on Gens (I would recommend the JP version for the true experience).

Yes, but who's gonna easily shell out $60+ just for the Japanese GEMS version? I would just emulate it. (Not that I'm encouraging piracy, the GEMS and PC versions are inferior in a lots ways anyways) Plus, if you know how, you can change the games music with you're own selection anyways.

I do have the ISO somewhere in my hard drive, but I don't understand the whole process of burning CDs and the like, so... O^O

I recall having a horrible time trying to play Rondo of Blood until out of nowhere a good Samaritan designed a .exe PC port that only required a simple install. Is there anything like it for Sonic CD?

I think there's a couple of Sonic Gems Collection copies available on my local eBay-esque service. I can't justify getting it for Sonic CD alone, though. No other game there interests me (except Vectorman... Vectorman is in this, right?).
