Why are most shonen anime adamant about this particular aesop asking what are you fighting for?

It's harder to take someone down who's fighting for more than themself.

because its been an anime stereotype for a long time. no one knows who came up with it first or what the thinking behind it was.

But what if someone really loooooooooooooves fighting, couldn't they be fighting for the sake of fighting with the same ferocity as someone who fights for other people and be the best fighter anyway?

I think passion of the battle can still lose to the desire to protect others, I'm a believer of objective idealism that overrides basic principles in the world. By this, I think with the right ideal and drive to fulfill it, it can provide a being with many levels of ascended power. Such as a mother saving their child against otherwise impossible odds or a soldier withstanding life threatening wounds to get his buddy to safety.

Though, what I've said here isn't really anything different than the above. It's not just an "Anime" thing, it applies to facets of life aswell.

Well, what if you somehow fool yourself into thinking you're protecting others, and, um, that works?

...wut?

I think the key thing is that if you feel people are relying on you, you're far more likely to grit your teeth, get up and keep going even when your life is in danger. It's often a suicidally risky move that takes others by surprise and makes a difference.
