Whenever I go into town, I carry a letter-opener on my person; specifically, strapped around my left arm, and hidden beneath my sleeve. In case I get mugged.

Honestly, though, I don't. But I would like to.

I probably look younger than I am to other people.

My painfully thin beard may help...

And this exactly why it is so annoying to me, young upstarts are not supposed to win against more experience fighters

Says who? There are a number of factors that may contribute to the defeat of their opponent. The most obvious ones would be the opponent totally underestimating the hero just because they're younger and - presumably - less experienced; and/or the opponent in question being too cocky/arrogant for their own good. If you were challenged by a ten-year-old kid, you'd probably think you have the upper hand, right?

Then that kid pulls out some crazy martial arts/monster/trading card/McGuffin and whups your sorry ass.

Ouch.

What do you do then? Run back to your superior and say, "Hey, boss, I got beaten up by a ten-year-old kid earlier"? Like hell you are. Chances are, you'll either bugger off fast or, for whatever reason (humiliation, respect, impression, etc.), you'll decide to join the kid's party. Or it could be contributed to honour and valour and whatnot; see below.

Quote
while they may have the talent, they don't necessarily have the experience to back it up

Experience what? If you've got talent, use it. True, experience does help significantly - especially in real life, which we're obviously not discussing here - if you've got talent and you can exploit it, then exploit the hell out of it. If you're a Combat Pragmatist - one who plays "dirty", so to speak - then all the better (this doesn't seem to happen too much in shonen, though; too much emphasis on "honour and valour" and whatnot).

And just because they're older and more experienced doesn't mean they're better, or that they even know what they're doing.

Quote
and they are supposed to be 'friends' with the poor bastard they come across on their journey?

Yes. Honour and valour and whatnot; see above.

Also, bear in mind this is shonen/seinen manga. Since when did it ever need to make any sense?

He was only about a month or two old when we got him. He seemed to come from a decent home...the lady who owned the house had several other cats, anyway, and she seemed to be treating them pretty well.

Because...

I don't know, why didn't you get another one?

Actually, it was because I couldn't afford one.

But still, the fact that the first one was such a bastard didn't help.

Wish I had one now, though.

I absolutely love cats. But the last time I got one, he spent his first week in the house hiding under the floorboards. We eventually got him out by coaxing him with meat. He hissed and scratched every time we went near him.

Guess why I never got a cat after that~?

In his quest to retrieve the mighty Golden Hook from the dreaded and powerful Gildabeast atop the treacherous mountains of Skii'rahgg, he tripped, fell and lost his hand to a pile of spiky rocks. With no Golden Hook, he had to settle for a black one.

Which was still made by the Gods, incidentally.

I am beginning to grow annoyed at the 'Defeat Means Friendship' trope in shonen and some seinen. I don't know why it is used a lot especially in shonen but I hate this with a passion and it annoys me that hero/heroine always seem to get their way no matter what. Are trying to break the bad guy into submission or what?

If you get your ass handed to you by some band of young upstarts and you have any sense, you'll either run like hell or join the winning team.

I don't really know enough about the Lantern-verse to write a decent backstory for myself. I've tried looking up Wikipedia and some other sites for information, but I'm still not too clear on the Blue Lantern Corps and how they work.

Anybody care to help me out here?

In that case, magnificent!

Oh, I have another question. I know there's the Blue Lanterm Corps' oath, but I've been thinking of my own personal oath...could I use that too/instead?

I'm a boring-as-vanilla straight guy. Might contain hints of bi. Damned if I know. It's probably hiding away somewhere in my stragely under-active libido.

Chest and rear don't really factor into it much for me. I like petite. Pettanko is good too. Not to the point of lolicon, though. Especially not in real-life women.

Oh, lord, the Eldritch Abominations are breaking down the fence again. Pesky neighbours...if Nyarlathaotep can't even keep his Shoggoths on a damn leash, he shouldn't be able to have any of 'em. Right, grab the shotgun...

I didn't steal 'em from you.

Honest.

Really, though, Enigma's had 'em for as long as I can remember. They used to be bigger. When I redesigned him, I made 'em smaller and pointier.

They...don't actually do anything, though. =|
