Rockman Series / Re: 25th Anniversary Logo Leaked
« on: January 11, 2012, 03:45:12 AM »
I just don't get how people are jumping from the logo to OMG CAPCOM'S GONNA [parasitic bomb] ON MEGAMAN AND ALL ITS FANS THIS YEAR in the same breath.
The same reason they jumped down Capcom's throat for X being anything less than a full playable character in UMvC3, Mirby.  Because they WERE shat on by Capcom with Universe and Legends 3, they're more than a little sick of it, and it's left them on edge.

This logo could very easily mean absolutely nothing.  It's unused, probably for a reason.  But I must admit, if I were to assume it had any significance, I would get only bad news from there.  All the people saying that Mega Man needs to be more than his NES back catalog at this point, I can't really say that they're wrong.  That particular nostalgic boom was over in 2010 and we were left at the end of 2011 yearning for a proper modern adaptation of the franchise, be it Classic with a freakishly alienating art style (...), a PC game of a basically dead genre with an awesomely wide crossover cast and multiplayer just because Hell froze over, or the decade-old wet dream that we probably would have given up on had Capcom not brought it up.

In light of all of that shattering, Capcom going back to "Hey, remember the NES?" is probably the worst possible form of consolation that they can offer.  It flies in the complete opposite direction of anything the fans were looking for.

But, again, it's an unreleased logo.  It may mean absolutely nothing.

Well, Archer, I disagree.

It's the Legends board, what did you think we were going to talk about?  We've been tip-toeing around our critics for the last six months and I'm getting a little tired of it.

An additional problem lays in another component as well. Legends cant be re-released without licensing issues. Not just is there the issue of paying someone else, it is WHO do you pay? The company may not exist anymore, offering a whole host of other issues.

I'm going to presume this is the voice acting for the USA version, since they re-released DASH and DASH2 on PSP a while back.
As I recall Capcom mentioned some time ago that it was not an audio issue.  Though it's hard to imagine what ELSE it could be.  The notion of a company involved in localization somehow or another going kaput is valid, in fact I recall such a topic coming up the last time Capcom commented.

But I have a hard time believing that they cannot re-release the games on physical media.  It has been brought up, in the context of PSN discussions, that contracts from that time do not allow for digital distribution (which may explain why the X4 phone ports haven't come here, not that we give a damn, but when they're willing to release that POS X1 flash remake...).  But we've already seen PS1-era games re-released in the Anniversary and X collections, so why is that suddenly an issue with Legends?

Recall if you will that the PSP ports were originally released on individual packages, not a collection/dual pack, which was IMHO a pretty bone-headed move on Capcom's part.

Well, it's not as if we haven't seen gaming miracles happen before.  I mean, who thought that Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom would ever see a release in the english-speaking world?

But yeah, pretty much every option on the table ranges from a snowball's to a snowflake's chances in Hell.

Archetype, Capcom isn't selling Mega Man.  They could have no interest in making any Mega Man game, ever, for another two decades, and they would still retain the brand as a matter of pride, of retro re-releases, and of merchandising.  Mega Man is still a gaming icon, he's just a gaming icon whose owner no longer believes him relevant to the mass market.  But they know that they can still milk him, and as long as they can, they won't let him go.

And yes, Archer, we're still "going on about it".  We all await the day that Capcom gives us some more significant news worthy of discussion in the LEGENDS FORUM.  Until that happens, we're left with their complete dickery of July 2011.  That's all we've got.  It's likely all we will have for the next several years.  You don't like it, steer clear of this section.

As for MMRA's idea, the sad reality is that Capcom has exceedingly little confidence in Mega Man and even less in the Legends series.  An HD game, even a remake of existing games, requires a hefty budget that I don't see Capcom willing to provide.  It's a shame, though, because a decade-old presentation needs a modern rework very badly.  But I just don't see Capcom putting that effort forward.  I mean, God, we all saw the gameplay videos of that iPhone X1 port, right?  Do we really want to chance Legends getting THAT level of treatment?

If I were to choose a plan of attack, I would go for a straight-emulated collection for a brick-and-mortar, multi-console release.  Legends 1, Legends 2, Misadventures, DASH2 Episode 1, and maybe some oddball Classic spinoff as bonus content (like Rockboard, Mega Man Soccer, or as unlikely as this may be, Super Adventure Rockman).  Legal issues may keep Capcom of America from putting PS1-era games up for digital distribution, but I don't believe for one second that Capcom couldn't reuse them for retail (otherwise MM8 and X4-X6 would not have reappeared in their respective Collections in the U.S.).

The problem of this approach is that it is unlikely to expand the series audience due to how dated the games are.  It's not just visuals, either; the entire Legends series comes from the very infancy of 3D gaming, back before the inherent rules of 3D control schemes and camera systems had been established.  Heck, the first Legends game predates Sony even establishing an analogue input for their controllers.  But in lieu of the full development that Capcom can't be assed to do anymore, it's the best shot we've got, and it's a cheap enough project that even the "vocal minority" that pays outrageous prices on Amazon and eBay should still be able to generate a decent return.  Besides, how much of a minority are we, anyway?  We don't know; nobody bothered to try and sell anything to us in the last 11 years.  And, being a compilation, there is the off chance that CoA could proceed with it on their own as they did with MMAC (since L3's cancellation CoJ has been far more draconian than CoA).

The only alternatives as I see it are to either convince Capcom to release the prologue game currently gathering dust in their archives, or for another company with money and passion to pester the ever loving heck out of Capcom for a collaboration on the Legends series (CyberConnect2?).

But, as said, pretty much every option on the table is unlikely.  We're screwed, and we know it.  But there's always a chance, however small, so we'll always keep pushing.

Juggling Mario Kart 7 (3-starred everything, but the online is still addictive), and Mighty Switch Force.  Also giving Sonic Chronicles a try.

Added ya to the front page, and since I know you're looking for Mario Kart 7 opponents, I'll go ahead and add you to my 3DS's list as well.

Well, I finally got my foot in the Community door today thanks to Vixy.  Very grateful that she put up with me for four races. :cookie: <3

I think I've been playing that game a little too much. -u-' But I don't want to get cocky; I have yet to race PB, and he fairly regularly ripped my ass apart in MKWii.
(that and my last random match was kinda shameful...)

Wednesday at 9PM is perfect.  Tuesday is a little trickier but could probably work as well.

Hell, I'd ask you to play now, but I kinda need sleep...

To date that was the ONLY time anyone raced in the RPM community...  Arche and I pretty much joined each other's random games.

Hey, give me a date, and I'll be there. 8)

Yeah, Arche is pretty much the only RPMer I've managed to race as well...

Just 3-starred this game the other day, and unlocked the Beast Glider shortly afterwards.

The more I experiment with the parts, the more I love the game's balance.  It reminds me of the SNES/N64 days when even the greatest extremes in terms of character stats could still be driven competently, despite handling differently.  You just have to know where your strengths are.

It's like shaking the 3DS when playing Mario 3D Land after playing Galaxy 1 and 2.
And NSMBWii, considering that the propeller block exists (albeit in different forms) in both games.  That one tripped me up a couple of times.

That's Zero's aerial attack (see 2:00), merely using the transitional frames for if he lands while performing it.

I prefer to just think of those two as original, as the movement doesn't really match Ensuizan that well, and the ground version of that attack is taken from TvC, which was a lot more literal in its attack animations than MvC3 was (MvC3 is obviously taking larger creative liberties with moves like Rekkoha and Genmurei).

Take note that Heat Haze had the X and Y command input. Therefore Sogenmu's the most likely canidate. If it were Heat Haze, there would've been yet another greyscale Zero behind him. I'm not sure, correct me if I'm wrong.
You actually have to equip two Heat Hazes for that to happen.

Sogenmu is used because it's from a main-series game, that's pretty much it.  Launcher/Rising is a pretty loose connection and could just as easily relate to X6's third combo hit, among other things.

Much appreciated for the more obsessive fanboyishness in all of us. 8)

The vast majority of that is lifted from TvC.  Right down to the basic attack combo being basically the X4/X5 attack with Zero switching his dominant hand, and even the double-bladed variety to the Hadangeki (incidentally, X5's saber wave was called Denharei, or likely Denha Zero with the way MvC3 is translating).

Aside from the obvious graphical changes, basically what was new to MvC3 was the Raikousen, the fact that Rekkoha is performed with the buster (the mechanics of the attack were obviously redone as well), and Genmurei.  I gotta admit, that last one caught me by surprise.  I thought it was supposed to be Rekkyoudan, from X8, especially since his debut trailer depicted it as a projectile reflector.

I'm surprised that they neglected to mention the fact that, despite it's name, Sogenmu's handling is more akin to Heat Haze, especially given that they chose Command Mission music for that segment in the video.

I want to bet that the "New Physics Engine" and "New Graphics Engine" are to blame here, too big for Nintendo's Steep Filesize Limit.
Probably, but as this is a 2012 game, you'd think the Wii-U would have been a viable option (Generations I get; too early).  Unless Nintendo still doesn't have their digital [parasitic bomb] together, which I guess wouldn't surprise me all that much (they SAY they were taking notes from the 3DS launch, but how good they were remains to be seen).

Quote
If they really want to make the fans happy, then they need to tell Dimps to get lost, their "level design" is horrendous. Sonic Team did fine 2D Levels in Generations, they should be working on Sonic 4, not Dimps. Here's hoping the new physics engine makes the Spindash stronger than it was in Episode 1. Hell, they should go back and redo E1 with the New engines so there isn't any difficulty in going back to E1 after playing E2 and vice versa.
I found the spindash in and of itself to be fine; the problem is when you leave the ground (which people often demonstrate by spindashing off an edge, but the spindash itself does not cause the issue).  Basically, Sonic brakes whenever he's in mid-air and you're not holding any direction on the D-Pad.  It's EXTREMELY odd when you start out, but you can adjust to it, and even learn to exploit it.

I am hugely excited that Tails is returning, and hugely disappointed at the lack of Nintendo logos among the platform list.

Guess I'll have to steal some time with my brother's 360 at some point during 2012.

I just 2-starred all of Mario Kart 7 today.  So far as 3-star ranks go, I'm missing 6 each in 150cc and Mirror.  Not sure if I'm feeling crazy enough to pursue them just yet.

942
I'll be the first to tell you that I, personally, have plenty of criticisms with 9.  But it was a nice change of pace as far as critical response goes, mainly because it was riding a nostalgia wave.

I don't really doubt that the established formula still works, although yeah, people are going to be reluctant to pay 50 bucks for it in this day and age (ESPECIALLY as long as Capcom is fixated on 8 bosses).  The problem, as it went prior to 9, is that their attempts at it either failed to match up to their predecessors (Powered Up and its radically claustrophobic play style) or were completely bogged down with needless sidequests that barely gave you any worthwhile rewards anyway (ZX Advent is a serious offender here; near all of the chips are only available post-game and they don't do anything THAT special).

With 9, the NES style at least mandated that it was impossible for them to screw up the character-to-screen-size ratio, something that somebody really should have looked at more carefully with Powered Up.  I'll never tell you that 9's level design was up to par with the actual NES games, though, because it wasn't.  There's a difference between challenging and just blind-siding the player.  And the over-reliance on the shop diminished the feel of legitimately growing stronger.  And the nerve to charge for difficulty levels was Capcom's cheapness in full and obvious force.  10 was definitely an improvement, although the fact that it's the only game where I wish for a weapon to deliberately fire down a pit isn't necessarily a good thing, but other than that things were looking up at least quality-wise.  Unfortunately, the audience didn't follow.  Can't say I blame them, there were still a few kinks to work out.  We as fans have a bit more patience, but if in two games of the same style you can't perfectly nail it, the general populace is going to very quickly lose their desire to see further sequels.

While? Sega got people's interest back with Unleashed,(for better or for worse, at least the fanbase was in agreement over the daytime segments) got their love with Colors, and generations simply sealed the deal that Sega knows what they are doing again, and won their hearts back over.
And before that there was Rush and Secret Rings.  Sonic, even among the editorial audience (which received him considerably worse than his fanbase most of the time; the Adventures got shafted after Sonic lost his "console mascot" status), has been more hit-and-miss than he was the complete disaster that the populace tried to pass him off as.  The editors dismissed it as a "handhelds rule, consoles suck, except when it's the one Wii game that doesn't look like a GCN game" trend.

As a side note, I still maintain that Black Knight is sorely underrated, but I don't expect to change anyone's mind this late in the game.  You just can't sell Sonic with a sword to some people.  The genie thing probably only worked because it wasn't evident on the game's cover.

Sonic was more of a bumpy roller coaster; I don't think anyone in their right mind didn't notice something off after Shadow, the second post-Dreamcast game.  Mega Man has been a slow decent into mediocrity, with quality levels that "satisfy" the fans but were insufficient for the masses.  We were at least four (sidescrolling) games into it before we even started to notice.  Then Mega Man 9 happened and we thought all was well again.  No such luck.

I haven't done this for myself, but I'm pretty sure that if you want to send games to another system, you need both systems for the transfers to work (as in, won't happen via SD card).  I've never in my life traded in a handheld so I don't know if the stores will help you make the swap or what.

I don't think I've added my 3DS code yet

I got Mario Kart for Christmas, so add me so that we can play later (also, I downloaded swapnote)! I'll be sure to add you guys later.
Added you to my 3DS and to the forum list.

It is easier to nab the higher star ranks (though as Archetype said it's not score alone; 40 points certainly doesn't guarantee you three stars in 150cc), but I'm glad that it is so.  Mario Kart Wii's expectations were unrealistic; I once got a B rank along with a 40 point score in that game.  When stars are REQUIRED to unlock stuff, and the CPU goes as bat-crap crazy on you as it does in MKWii's 150cc, that is simply not acceptable.

947
Mega Man certainly isn't lacking in recent games that harken to his past.  But between Powered Up, MHX, and MM9, something was missing.  They seem to look at what they want to reference (MM1, X1, and MM2 respectively) without bothering to look at the finer elements of the gameplay.  Universe, IMHO, was following that same track, although it's hard to say for sure since we never saw it in its final form.  The NYCC2010 build certainly had a long way to go before it could convince me otherwise, though.

Between those four I'd say MHX came closest to capturing the appeal of its predecessor(s), but even it came up short in the face of the SNES X1, unless you wanted to play as Vile.

948
Yeah, failure to count anything in 5 weeks wasn't an encouraging sign.

Well, we can dream, right?

949
you cannot just half-ass it like Capcom did with the MvC3 franchise which was a guaranteed seller no matter what.
Figured I'd comment on this one again.  As it turns out, even UMvC3 isn't as sure-fire as Capcom would like.
http://thesilentchief.com/2011/11/29/ultimate-marvel-vs-capcom-3-sells-less-than-30k-out-of-the-gate-in-na/

In all fairness, from what I can tell VGChartz (the source reference for this article) still isn't registering U.S. sales of the game.  They list Europe and Japan sales combined over the first five weeks are totaling in the ballpark of only 60k.

I guess even the 2D fighter nutcases have their limits to how much crap they'll take when an update to render their old game obsolete is released in the same calendar year.  Serves Capcom right, I'd say.  Trouble is, losing money won't convince them to take risks.

I'm trying to not hate Capcom, I really am (and I certainly believe there are cool people who work for them, including those in the CoA branch that I've met), but I seriously believe they are going downhill.  As long as they continue to release lazy [parasitic bomb], then there's only two possible outcomes:
1. It sells, and because people are satisfied with lazy [parasitic bomb], they continue to make lazy [parasitic bomb].
2. It doesn't sell, and Capcom feeling the pinch, doesn't want to spend the money necessary for decent game development.

This is what I mean when I say that the largest damn fanbase in the world (including our theoretical anime-built new one) isn't going to help any if Capcom doesn't change their attitude.

950
Wow. This looks like a Flash Game, a bad one.
Pretty much my reaction, especially with the whole screen transition thing and the enemies dropping out of the sky.  I was hoping the framerate was a YouTube capture issue, but I don't think that's the case.  And jeez, the whole Vile battle/Zero save thing reeks of amateur rush job (not that I don't enjoy an excuse to hear Zero's theme longer, but that's pretty much it).

Look, I don't like iPhone gaming and touch-screen-only controls anymore than the next child-of-80's gaming nerd, and I imagine such a format is in itself a valid excuse for toning down the difficulty quite a few notches.  But even I know that the platform is capable of a more professional presentation than that.  Still, PB has a point; even if this game were good, it wouldn't accomplish much.

As the 100,000 Strong's recent wrap-up stated, this game is a lose-lose situation.  Buy it, and Capcom thinks we're satisfied with lazy [parasitic bomb].  Don't buy it, and it's one more bullet point on their list of reasons why supposedly nobody is interested in the franchise.  Our only hope is that it was such a small investment that Capcom isn't counting on it to make much.  But, given that they've previously refused to release crap that they had already finished, I'm not sure I'd bank on that one.

My only comfort would be that Sven wouldn't call us self-entitled over this...but knowing that he was recently a dick to the MM fans on more than one occasion, it's only a matter of time.
Sven was only a dick because the fans had reached such a boiling point that they would snap over the most nonsensical things, because they were tired of all the [parasitic bomb] they've already had to take.  Most of the X-not-in-UMvC3 rage was pointless and misdirected, but while arguably an invalid complaint in itself (and I WILL argue that it is), it was the symptom of Capcom treating Mega Man like [parasitic bomb] in the broader sense over the course of the year.

In short, the fans had a legitimate point, but they picked the worst possible example, which is only building frustration on both sides.
