Rockman Series / Re: The Protomen Movie: "The Will of One"
« on: January 28, 2012, 06:03:08 PM »
On one hand, I don't want to encourage the fanbase being a bunch of dicks, but on the other can you really blame people for being skeptical to donate to a fan-based promise?  Anyone could throw together a bunch of comforting words and story sketches.  I know nothing of TRIAL Films.  Does anyone else here?  Frankly, even if we as Mega Man / Mega Man Legends fans WEREN'T pissy over being burned repeatedly over the last year, I'd still see plenty of reason to be skeptical.  I want to believe these guys are legitimate and that they could put something special together, but they really do need to establish an image both for themselves and for this project before they go asking for money.  That's just the way it is.

Well, this is nice.  YouTube video is removed and the campaign page is hidden.

While neither site has any info, their Facebook page states that The Will Of One is canned, claims that they'll be refunding donations, and that they have other projects in mind.

Can't say I'm that surprised.  These guys strike me as having good intentions, but a little on the naive side.  Raising half their goal (4 grand) before even releasing a teaser?  Yeah, not happening.

I'm sure that [dark hold]s can be negative.

Gaming / Re: Nintendo Releases New Wii U Details: PB is Pleased
« on: January 28, 2012, 02:31:11 AM »
I need to see a game worth playing that isn't a Zelda tech demo which we all know the actual Zelda game devs are going to disregard anyway.

But still, the tech announcements are interesting.  Good news, to be sure.  I just need to see software.  But hey, it's Nintendo, we know it's coming.  I definitely plan on getting a Wii-U, I'm just still waiting for them to blow my socks off.

IMO Club Nintendo only got better starting this year, with the free download tickets for eShop/WiiWare games. The only thing worth while back then were the posters and Hanafuda Cards (and I so do love them).
I sorta-kinda disagree with that.  The game downloads are great, this is true.  But their Platinum Status reward this year kinda blows.  Mario hat, awesome.  Mario resin, awesome.  Mario...pins?  They already did that, and the non-Elite pins are actually better.  Not impressed.

But they did have a few cool things up there.  Other M screensaver, Zelda posters, and all that jazz.

Yeah...no.
Best answer ever.  XD

i meant like a proper new game, not...that

i know you guys aren't that desperate
Well, considering the cancellation or refusal to localize all known proper games is the entire REASON the fanbase is on edge...well yeah, of course actually releasing one would quell them.  Using PB's analogy, it's the denial of our crack that has us so pissed off in the first place.

Until that's fixed and until Capcom starts showing some shred of compensation for their [tornado fang] up, stuff like this, which should be seen as a humorous gesture, will get people upset. That's all there is to it.
When you're right, you're right.  It's the same as the bull surrounding X and UMvC3.  The fans are on edge, and Capcom basically can do no right until they get a decent core Mega Man game out there.

This one, though, I can honestly see as hitting too close to home.  The fact that it's BBAMM playable is a direct reference to Universe, and his profile as a "digger" a reference to Legends.  Presumably because this was set up with Inafune in 2010.  That's the whole problem here.  Had Universe and Legends3 come out, this would've been hilariously enjoyable.  But, they didn't, and because they didn't, this is just reminding us of what we lost.  You kinda have to be brain-dead, doubly so on Capcom's end (I could understand the Digger reference flying over Namco's heads), to not see what the problem is, so they come off as clearly not giving a damn.

I don't think Capcom is trolling Mega Man fans at all, but while UMvC3 is a simple matter of "we want what we want and nothing else" from the fans, SFxT is more a matter of sheer negligence on the part of the developers.  I still believe they had good intentions, but...really...

Nintendo might listen, I cant be too sure, but they almost always seem to follow fan demand.
Actually, I think Capcom could take lessons from Nintendo when it comes to trolling your own fans.

I consider CM to be the most visually pleasing MM game. Unfortunately, we haven't really seen a more graphically achieved game in the franchise. And I really, really love the design choice for X's armor. Ultimate armor was overkill, but I like the Gundam vibe.
Very much agreed on all points.  Command Mission was by far the best looking Mega Man game and its original designs, even if at times unorthadox, were pretty damn badass.

I don't blame you.  Functionally the Neutral Armor is freaking awesome.  Mix-and-match armor is something I was dreaming of ever since X6.  It's just that artistically they obviously bare-boned it.

...although that's pretty much the same story for most of X8 and MHX.  And I don't think it's as if the fanbase hasn't noticed, either; Yoshikawa seems to redesign almost everything he touches and the only one that actually stuck was Alia (breasts and feminine hair styles will do that).

They did but he seperated Colors from "Their handheld stuff" which led me to assume that he thought Wii Colors was made by them.
Touche.  I didn't realize that Sonic Team picked up the boost gauge habit.

Even so, I still think that Dimp's usuals are better than UnWiished.

Unwiish'd was dimps. As we all know, they are not the best when it comes to sonic.
I'll be the first to tell you that Dimps is not perfect (why oh why are there so many pits in DC-era Generations on 3DS?!), but I had a higher opinion of them before I played Unleashed.  Their handheld stuff, STH4, Colors, none of it handles as badly as Unleashed does.  At least, that's what I'm getting from my early impressions.

Yeah, X6 had great mugshots.

I recall X4's mugshots followed the same deal for X's armor.
As did X3 (character switching), and the Get Weapon screens of X1 and X2.

It's sad to think that presentational details that were accomplished on the Super NES cannot be preserved in today's era of gaming technology, but I guess rising development costs tend to encourage devs to cut some very obvious corners. -AC

So my wife got me Sonic Chronicles and Sonic Unleashed (Wii) for Christmas, and my Mario Kart addiction finally subsided enough in the past week or two to try them.

...granted I haven't spent all that much time with either one, but right now I'm kinda thinking that my instincts served me well on what Sonic games not to buy.  At this point I'm completely mystified as to how Unleashed is considered the beginning of Sonic's redemption.  The controls are unbelievably loose, and the framerate is choppy as hell.

And, that brings us back to CyberConnect2.  (not a bad idea, I'd say)

Graphics help, but they don't make or break a game.  In fact, I'd argue that very few 3D PS1 games could touch Legends 2's visuals.

I was once one of the detractors to his style being used in X8, but after seeing his lush concept art for said game in the R20 book recently, I might have to reconsider and blame the in game stuff on a still immature transition to 3D models and the like on the PS2. The character captions were ok, no need to nitpick there even if animated portrait expressions would have been nice.

Seriously, his stuff is good, almost Nayakama good with regards to scenery. Character design is here and there though.
Honestly I'm not the biggest fan of Nakayama either, but that's more on the grounds of feeling unfit for the character of Zero himself than it is his actual ability.

Here's the thing, though.  Platform transitions and new technologies do not excuse the level of laziness present in the character expressions.  I'm not even talking about lacking animation, either.  It's things like the Neutral Armor being very obviously designed to excuse the lack of armored expressions.  The parts that you've selected demand only a palette swap and they can't even be assed to do that.  MHX then took it a step further and ignored armor outright.  The basic concept of "layers" should be all that is needed to handle these things properly, but they can't be bothered to do so.

As much as I love X6, it is still one of the most infamously rushed games in the series, and even it did not commit the extreme lapses in artistic presentation that X8 and MHX do.  Yoshikawa, as I see it, focuses too much on making the job easier, rather than what does the characters justice.

Legends had facial expressions and body language nailed.
An EXTREMELY valid point there.  The use of Legends' facial expressions is phenomenal.  Throughout both games you see a lot of face textures designed for a specific moment, and a specific camera angle, to create the illusion of a level of detail that the PS1 is not technically capable of.  It's some pretty outstanding stuff.

Considering that it was the only 3D X game to even do lip movements, it's kinda hard to criticize Command Mission for its expressions...

Doubly so when you consider the extreme laziness of X8/MHX's character mugshots during dialogue.  I REALLY don't like Yoshikawa having the art director's seat...

I actually hate this level because from when I first played the game in 2001 until now, I could never make this one specific wall jump in that level to keep going with the Shadow Armor (bestest armor ever). XD
I believe you guys are talking about the second Gate's Lab level (although I've heard some complaints about wall-jumping during one of the lava segments in the first, but that's just a matter of needing to try harder).

Hyper Dash + Jumper, if you want to make it easy.  Hyper Dash alone works if you're pressed for part slots, but you have to position it just right.

I prefer to read X's hand attack as being a desperation move, necessary because his buster was lying on the floor.

DASH / Can Bandai get Mega Man off the F***ING moon?
« on: January 16, 2012, 04:03:43 AM »
UPDATE:

Second poll is open!  This is it, folks, the top ten, only one vote permitted.

http://www.facebook.com/questions/354573801228458/

Let's get Trigger off the goddamn moon! :V

Original post below:

As reported earlier by The Mega Man Network, Bandai and Bluefin are opening up polls to determine the next figure in their D-Arts line.  The first poll allows user-submitted entries and the final poll will take the top seven and narrow it down.

First poll opened a little early, since the fans are chomping at the bit:
http://www.facebook.com/questions/340535812632257/

Get Me Off The Moon had thought to enter Barrett as their rallying cry, however there is the question of whether or not Capcom would even allow such a license (frankly I'm amazed that Aero made it into Udon's Tribute book).  Bandai themselves were kind enough to throw Mega Man Volnutt into the starting lineup, though.  Volnutt at time of writing is maintaining a 20+ vote lead over his nearest competitor (Sigma).

For the first poll, at least, you can vote for as many characters as you want.  So no need to feel conflicted about leaving your favorites hang while you support Legends (on a personal note, this is liable to get awkward for me if Iris makes it into the top 7...).

Let's get Mega Man off the damn moon!

X / Re: Beta Primrose (Gravity Antonion) theme

I'm actually glad they changed it.  While I love X8's soundtrack, it does suffer samey instruments throughout much of it.  The final version of Primrose adds some much-needed variety.

Well, I already retorted the Action Man/Trivia issue earlier in this thread.

http://www.rockmancorner.com/2011/05/mega-man-legends-not-coming-to-psn.html
Sven in this video (from 14:20) speaks of the various things which can cause issues.  VA and soundtracks, which he seemingly spoke against previously, are among them.  But there's also logos, middleware, and the fact that early contracts may not have specified digital distribution as acceptable use.

Noteworthy is that Sven starts to talk about Legends 1 specifically, but then stops himself.

My money is on digital distribution.  Because none of what he is talking about stood in the way of MM8, X4, etc., in disc-based collections up to 9 years after their original release.  The PSP ports not coming here could be a simple marketing decision; can you really blame CoA for not bringing over UMDs containing only a single generally unenhanced PS1 game?  Does two games make for much of a compilation?  Even Japan never got Misadventures on PSP, to my knowledge anyway.

There's one other thing we need to call bull on CoA for:  NONE OF THIS stands in the way of
DASH 2 Episode 1
, because that one was never previously brought to the U.S.  So if they wanted to make a quick digitally distributed buck, there you go.

I know I said I'd be there guys, but this week is turning out freakishly busy for me.  And I still need to rip myself away from the computer long enough to take care of the wonderful real world of bills and check recording by the end of the night.

Ugh.  I'll try for tomorrow; promise.

I would define "bad stage" with "Tornado Tonion".

You know that winding staircase shpiel that they used for brief segments of Split Mushroom's and Izzy Glow's stages?  They basically made an ENTIRE stage out of just that.

The 2D level design of the game is just entirely too linear.  The only 2D level that comes close to decent is Soldier Stonekong's.  The auto-lock doesn't really help make things any less boring, either; there's no reason for it to exist in 2D.

924
Okay, it took some digging, but I found the quote from Sven that I was looking for.  Granted, this is way back in December 2010 (you know, back when Legends 3 was real):

"Actually, it looks like there's an IP risk on one of the titles so the IP group won't let us re-release it on PSN. We've been trying to see if we can't get that resolved but it's going to take a long time."

*voice actor discussion among the members*

"The issues I'm speaking of are not audio related but I can't elaborate more unfortunately."

http://www.capcom-unity.com/ask_capcom/go/thread/view/7371/26463829/Progress_on_getting_the_Mega_Man_Legends_series_to_PSN

So, some middleware issue, I guess?

925
Ok, this is what I was trying to say, thats not how the copyright/lawsuit world of the US works. They only care about direct similarities/straight rip of copyrighted material, not references (If they cared about references there wouldn't be any shout-outs/nods to other works of fiction, etc.)
Very true.  And even if for the sake of argument that was a problem, Action Man only exists in L1 due to regional censorship.  In the original DASH game that thing isn't a comic book at all... :V

Likewise, L2's trivia is a simple matter of historical fact, which is nowhere near the same thing as infringing use.  If it was, Wikipedia would be sued out of existence.
