Rockman Series / Re: [News] No New Game for 25th Anniversary (Probably)

If that'd happen then it'd just keep showing how everyone can handle the MM franchise better than Capcom itself.
Maybe, but they'd still get my money through their licensing it.  And they DAMN WELL would get it, I assure you.

In the meantime, I'll probably get the cartridge anyway just so I can settle my conscience and stare at the awesomeness.

If by "pilot" you mean Inafune...if he remained on that plane, he'd most likely be suffering from the emotional exhaustion of having to deal with that obnoxious crew 24/7.
I'm sure that if Inafune thought he was doing his best work in Capcom, he wouldn't have left.

But I dunno.  I think that on the particular plane we call "X-series", he's got a point.  Inafune never seemed to give a damn about that one after X4.

Zero's a direct sequel to the X series, and it's much different.
If by "different" you mean "watered down".  Zero 1's presentation is rather rough and it doesn't offer a whole heck of a lot to the gameplay table that the X series didn't do better.  The sequels got better as they went along, but to this day I consider Xtreme2 the best handheld Mega Man game, ever (engrish and all).

Which of course means I recommend it to anyone looking for any halfway decent GBC game.

If anything, I think ZX managed to kick a lot of the stagnation that had set in during Zero 4.  Unfortunately, it too, had more than a few rough spots in presentation (mission system is clunky, localization was [acid burst] poor, no New Game Plus to abuse Model OX, and there is not a single weapon energy restore point in the entire game).

Well, there is definitely some truth to that.  But sometimes it takes a keen eye to tell what is and isn't broke.

I wasn't aware of an actual approval meeting. That's just more evidence to show that Capcom forced the cancellation after an agreement was met.
Oh, it's damn well FACT that they did that.

It's sad how much ignorance and disinformation was spread among people who didn't follow the Devroom blog religiously.  Well, the short and sweet of it: February 2011 was the original series of meetings to determine Legends 3's greenlight status (the Devroom had been in full swing for four months at this point).  The end result of the meeting was an extension of the game's trial period.

The Prototype itself was the direct result of that meeting, as was announced some time later by Director Eguchi.  The idea was, since the general public had been for quite some time asked to contribute to a game they knew nothing about, to give them the chance to see the progress thus far for themselves (previously this was attempted at a Japanese event scheduled for March 29, but it was cancelled in light of the earthquake).  The "marketed" Prototype was based off of the greenlight meeting build, and the reaction to it would be used to determine the retail game's greenlight status.

Coverage of the meeting spanned five of Kinako's reports in addition shout-outs from Eguchi and Kitabayashi.  Even though getting screenshots or any "real" information about the game back then was like pulling teeth, the folks at Capcom at the very least understood that this was a big deal to the Devroomers and deserved a large amount of attention (though it was unfortunate that at no point prior to these entries was the fact that the game was not yet greenlit ever disclosed, so at the time there was a bit of confusion over what exactly that meant).  Naturally, dropping the axe out of the blue after all of this came off as a large offense to the fanbase.

Quote
We took this prototype game, full of potential, and showed it off at the greenlight meeting. As hoped, Barrett’s reception was top-notch. What a response! And yet. . . it’s really difficult to determine just how well-received a sequel to a 10-year-old series will be.

This is where the Mega Man Legends Developer Room comes in. Planned as a place where users could get in on the development process, we knew there was some way we could utilize this to help our project succeed. We ended up reaching an unprecedented agreement. As it happens, it was decided that the prototype version of the game we had submitted within the company would be sold as a downloadable—“Mega Man Legends 3 Prototype Version”. Furthermore, the heat and excitement surrounding this downloadable title would determine whether or not the full game could be greenlit. If hype is strong, the full title will be a go. If not, it’s a no-go. I don’t even want to think about that outcome!

« on: September 16, 2012, 04:39:47 PM »
Well, yeah, but OSS was Japan-only.

As for Star Force, eh, partial credit.  When Battle Network took off it was mainly because the whole card-collecting/trading thing, and didn't necessarily speak to the same audience as the "Jump N' Shoot Man!" fans.  The transition to Star Force severed what little aesthetic ties remained to bridge that gap.  Legends at least has the same basic principle as the classic games going for it, just on a different kind of playing field.

Capcom is proving that they have no damn clue how to make a "golden age" character relevant to modern gaming again.  They don't know how to do a New Super Mario Bros., a Kid Icarus, or even a Sonic 4 for that matter.  They can copy the past pixel-for-pixel (see MM9), but when stepping outside of that, they are entirely too eager to uproot the entire aesthetic of the franchise (X8, Powered Up, Universe, is it any wonder we got tired of the "visual reboots" after a while?).  Legends was EXACTLY what they needed: Fresh gameplay with a familiar face, not the other way around.  Unfortunately, the valid point can be made that the audience is far more open to such "experiments" when they're struggling to find early showcase titles for their shiny new system.  Missing the e-Shop launch was a terrible, terrible mistake, and as much as I want Legends 3 back, the longer it takes the more damage it's going to do to all parties concerned.

So far as the anniversary goes, I'm not at all surprised.  I knew that the timeframe for any whole-assed game was simply not there.  It was, in my mind, Legends 3 revival or bust.  Once you realize that, it's pretty obvious where we'll most likely end up.  Hopefully I can distract myself with the WiiU.  The magical 25th birthday is just going to leave us exactly where we were 14 months ago: Mega Man is alive and well, as a licensing tool.

Oh yes, and if I may bore you all long enough, I have a cross-post of my own to share.  It's basically my response to Capcom's continued requests that we "be patient", from one of the most recent Ask Capcom threads on the topic:

Quote
You know, the fans are anything but patient.  They are completely impatient.  More than that, they're obnoxious, petty, and never satisfied.  They don't appreciate anything they have, and you can't say a damn thing to please them.  And you know what?  Capcom, you brought it on yourselves.

My apologies to Sven; CoA has been the most sympathetic of Capcom's branches by far.  I know what a "taboo" topic Legends 3 is.  But all of the demands, all of the childish behavior, all of the complaining about Mega Man's absence from UMvC3, the backlash over Bad Box Art Mega Man in SFxT, and the constant whining that a cell phone game using a proven poor engine is IN NO WAY an appropriate celebration for a quarter-century franchise, we all know where it started.

Ever since the DS took off, Mega Man's been on a slow decline.  ZX, Star Force, Powered Up, Maverick Hunter X, all "good enough" for us, but not quite hitting it off with the gaming market as a whole.  They were "good" games, but the passion was lost.  Capcom got a spark back with Mega Man 9, but they failed to maintain it.  For as novel an idea as reverting back to the 1980's was, even fans of the golden age want a bit more than a new NES game.

And then we found it.  Inafune and co. had only to say, "
it's a game you've all been waiting for
", and nothing else, they already knew our answer.  Suddenly a dream from ages past was alive again, an unreal passion was ignited the likes of which the last hardware generation had never seen.  Capcom asked for our help in making it reality, and for nine months we offered all we could, with nothing but good faith in return.  We were told to be patient, even when the future was uncertain, with the promise that even if worst came to worst we would at least get a small glimpse of this dream before we had to lay it to rest once more.  Then suddenly it was all taken away.  Not just the game, but even the mere opportunity of the prologue, was ripped away from us with no word as to why.

That may be acceptable to employees of the gaming industry, who sacrafice their passion to the bitter realities in which they are immersed, in exchange for the roof over their heads.  But to the fans who were invited along for the ride, who had only their trust in Capcom to keep them going, that doesn't cut it.

So the question on my mind, the question on every fan's mind ever since that day 14 months ago, is what do you, Capcom, intend to do about it?  What do you intend to offer, what CAN you offer, that either of us can even hope will possibly compare to what was lost?  Games get cancelled all the time, yes, but this was not just any game.  Universe was cancelled, we got over it.  Is that what you're waiting for?  For us to "get over" Legends so that Mega Man can return to his usual mediocrity?  Because the thought has occurred to us, and I think that's what frightens and offends us more than anything else.  Legends 3 was an event over a decade in the making, it will not be forgotten so easily.

We're already been holding onto Legends with virtually no support for 12 years.  If you're waiting for us to let go, then you will be waiting a long, long time.

So Gamestop sold out their Premium Wii U Preorders already.

Real [tornado fang]ing quick I must say, glad I got mine in yesterday.
Eh, I neglected to pre-order on their website because of the fact that you can't pick it up in a store (meaning, you have to wait for them to ship it on the 18th).

I'd rather just camp at Wal-Mart again.  But hopefully, it won't come to that.  I doubt the WiiU's launch will be quite as insane as the Wii's.

No, it cannot play Gamecube games. So you'll have to keep your Wii or buy a new Gamecube! XD
Probably better to keep your Wii unless you use one of the attachments (IE, Gameboy Player or LAN adapter).  GCN component cables are ludicrously expensive.

Honestly, I'm keeping both.  GCN and WiiU going in the living room, retaining Wii for hacking purposes and all.  Like hell if I'm going to give up my custom NSMBWii soundtrack.

Quite a few people are hoping the Wii U will have some Gamecube VC games, upgraded to take advantage of the HD capabilities of the Wii U, but there's been nothing confirmed or even officially said about that idea.
With Nintendo showing no interest in upscaling Wii games, I sincerely doubt that will happen.  Some GCN games MIGHT be downloadable down the line, but I don't expect any enhancements.

Speaking of which...do either the Game Pad or the Pro have analogue triggers?  The Wii's Classic Controller did, but Classic Controller Pro doesn't.  If the WiiU doesn't, then that rules out a couple of GCN titles (Rogue Squadron and such).

Supposedly Mario and Luigi have no last names.

Notice the phrasing "current story", as in some rewrites probably went on between Super Mario World and now.  Bowser will always be "King Dad" as far as I'm concerned.

You know to this day I wonder how a female koopa the size of Bowser would look...but the idea it self seems horrifying.  Either way this makes a lot of sense.
I like Nintendrawer's version.  Not at all bad looking, but she is DAMN EVIL, even for a Koopa.

I would guess that "Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate" for the 3DS is the localized Tri G (seeings how the WiiU one is "Tri G HD Ver." in Japan).

I guess I kinda expect the WiiU to be "the" version since online is a much bigger deal outside of Japan.  I am curious about the 3DS connectivity features, though.  I mean, can StreetPass exchange WiiU connection info to meet later online?  Can your own WiiU and 3DS versions connect for multiplayer with you and a guest locally?  Would such a 3DS linkup allow two players to a console while online?

So those of you gawking at the price of an extra Game Pad, it's not even coming to North America.  Reggie said flat-out that no launch window game uses two touch screens, so there is no point.

That is an amazing idea, so therefore it will never happen.
Well, that's what PB specializes in.

To be honest, as far as online features go, I'd settle for Monster Hunter connecting between US and PAL players (now THAT would get me to rebuy the game; too many PAL RPMers I can't connect with).

The show is f'in awesome though! XD
I have no doubt.  But if me Hypershell can't munch metal, then there's only so much that can be done.

What is with all the touch screen greenhorns who never played Metroid Prime Hunters?

Anyway, I'm sure most of the people who got NSMB2 intend to get NSMBU.  Though, I must admit, I wasn't terribly impressed with NSMB2, but I still 5-shiny-starred it.

All in all the news has so far been sweet.  I don't really care how much a new Game Pad costs since...I'm aware of absolutely no reason to buy a second one.  I also think there is some logic to the "if you're going to need multiple touch screens, why not connect to the 3DS?" argument.  The Pro is literally the same damn thing minus the screen, after all.

Well, NSMBU is solid, and I'm curious to know more details on Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate.  Transformers Prime stings a little, though; I was hoping that if we saw robots in disguise on the WiiU it would be a port of Fall of Cybertron (mainly because I'm a rabid fan of Grimlock).

Still though, Nintendo really can't stop being in a "damned if you do, damned if you don't situation". People [sonic slicer] that Nintendo doesn't have games that they want, but then when they do have them they [sonic slicer] that Nintendo has them. It really sounds to me like those people just don't want anything to do with Nintendo at all.
That's because Bayonetta is HARDCOOORE!!11, and plumbers who ride dinosaurs are not.

I applaud Capcom for getting Monster Hunter to the west again.  May not be what I REALLY want from them, but hey, it's a step in the right direction.

Ordinarily the "rebuy the game for a slightly enhanced version" thing only works for me with Pokemon.  But Tri WAS pretty darn awesome, so we'll see?  Gotta find out more details on this one.

Coin Rush.
Mushroom Pack, making sure Mushroom-1 is the first stage.
Gold Flower.
Run and hit the checkpoint, use the earlier enemies to get around 500 coins.
Go into the pipe where the first Star Coin is, Run and jump onto the koopa twice.
Break the bricks to form a small set of stairs.
Infinite 1-UP trick, making sure to stop at about 900 coins (The Koopa only has 1,000 in him, and if you take them all then he dies and doesn't respawn.)
Do that twice more, third time feel free to kill it.
Run to the end.
Top of the Flagpole.
Next two stages don't matter so long as you get the top of the flagpole in the second stage (The third is always a fortress IIRC) to double your score, just killing the boss in a Fortress produces the same results.

You'll get the maximum 30,000 for Coin Rush, save that as your record so you can always Challenge it to get more.
I got to my 1,000,000 within a week thanks to that. I'm not going to bother with 9,999,999 though, not worth it.
Very clever, but it's still 30 repeats to get to the million.  There are plenty of other 3DS games with equally mind-numbing objectives for me to clear that DON'T make me wish I was playing NSMBWii with a hacked soundtrack and extra Yoshi eggs instead.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: If Layer is supposed to be sexy, she needs to soften up that hair.  Fan artists work wonders in that department, but I never found her official art that appealing.

Well, got my five shiny stars in NSMB2 today.  ...with just under 100,000 coins.

And Nintendo wants me to do that nine more times?  Eh, no thanks.  Even at 7k a pop in World 2-4, that's still pretty darn insane.  If they wanted to bank on people playing the game's multiplayer forever, they should have made it online.  At least with a console game you only need one system for multiplayer.

Guess for handhelds I'll be going back to Mario Kart 7.  I still need to try and do the whole Kid Icarus on Intensity 9 thing, too.

I also liked Over-1's design..
So do I, actually.  I mean, he's not the greatest, but he's solid.  Most who take the time to think about XOver realize that the most disturbing points to it are technical, not conceptual.  That being, it's reusing a game engine that was already established to be a complete POS.

Being peeved carries much less strong connotations than being offended.
To you, maybe.  Not everyone lives by that assumption.

I, for instance, ignore an awful lot of what I find offensive, because I respect the fact that what bothers me doesn't necessarily bother the rest of the world.  On the other hand, I would only describe myself as "peeved" when I am upset with something to the point of disrupting my usual state of mind, thus I require some manner of resolution before moving on.

Quote
All of that could've been avoided had you been more considerate.

See what I just did there?

I think you're splitting hairs here.

I think this is an overreaction.

Missing in action (MIA) is a casualty Category assigned under the Status of Missing to armed services personnel who are reported missing during active service. They may have been killed, wounded, become a prisoner of war, or deserted. If deceased, neither their remains nor grave can be positively identified. Becoming MIA has been an occupational risk for service personnel for as long as there has been warfare.

hi·a·tus
Noun:
A pause or gap in a sequence, series, or process.

Being MIA is being on hiatus, though being on hiatus isn't necessarily being MIA.

I don't see how MIA is inappropriate other than the fact that Mega Man isn't in the armed services, but I don't think I need to be telling you that the term in this case is being used metaphorically.

So, yeah, gonna need some more clarification on that one.

Quote
I think this whole BBAMM thing is kinda playing into that "attacking other franchises" thing when it comes to Street Fighter, since even though SFxT is clearly not made for us, we're being super picky about it anyways.
I'm sure those who attack Street Fighter out of jealousy (and I know they're out there) are more than willing to add BBAMM to their ammunition.  But as for me, whether it's a "Mega Man game" or not, it is still Mega Man playable in a video game with Capcom's approval.  Being a guest character does not grant him a free pass.

Both Flame and myself have already answered that.

And no, I don't think the reaction to BBAMM being removed would have been terribly severe.  Why?  Because to this day, nobody gives a damn about Mega Man Universe, which was essentially BBAMM's flagship game.  The fanbase brings that one up only for the sake of describing the state of the Mega Man franchise as a whole.  Exceedingly few actually mourn it.

But, as I said last post, there was no reason he needed to be outright removed.  There were other ways they could have handled it.

Then why do I see the complete opposite in so many Mega Man fans today? They've given me sufficient context to define how they've been offended better than a dictionary can.
As I said, it is up to the individual.  But when you go drawing distinctions between being "peeved" and being "offended", you're merely passing your own view of semantics off as fact.

Quote
By the way, I think it's a little odd that you're telling me I'm the one with the pitchfork. That's the pot calling the kettle black, isn't it?
No need to get defensive.  That was merely my way of asking you to hold back your initial reaction to my first line and hear me out.

Quote
The problem is that with this state of affairs between Capcom and Mega Man fans, it hasn't remained personal. It's become endemic and paraded around for the wrong reasons. I'm not liking what I'm seeing, and I wanted to call people out on that. I know what people are mad about, but as far as I can see it, something like BBAMM is just an available scapegoat.
UMvC3 was a scapegoat.  BBAMM is just bad taste.  As I've mentioned in my last post, there's a world of difference.

Quote
What reason does anyone have to believe that a parody like BBAMM would replace Mega Man?
He HAS, that's the point.  That's not by any means to say that he always will; suggesting otherwise would be naive.

You may call it a short stint, but as Objection Man pointed out, it's a stint that was 11 years in the making.  That's not something that's going to be brushed under the rug easily.

Quote
suffice it to say that Mega Man is not MIA. Just on hiatus.
Once again, you have an outstanding ability to split hairs among synonyms.

But I digress.  None of your examples post-date the production of Universe other than Project X Zone, which as far as we can tell is likely remaining Japan-only (I hope I'm wrong), and it's developed by Bandai and Monolith, not by Capcom (which is their excuse for not giving a damn if the game is localized or not).

Quote
BBAMM was just the best fit for SFxT
That's a debatable opinion if I ever saw one.  Anyone with a brain stem knows that the Mega Man franchise comes with a huge variety of options even if you're only willing to consider the series lead characters.  There are seven of them, after all.

What's more, there are more "Bad Box Art" designs than just MM1/Universe on which SFxT's is clearly based.  Their entire joke approach could have been very easily preserved with far more dignity and grace by simply reskinning it into the MM9 or MM10 promotional designs.

Quote
Is it really reasonable for us to be jealous of either Resident Evil or Street Fighter
Not in the least.

I mean, some passive, instinctive resentment, maybe.  But by any level of reasonable, conscious thought, attacking one franchise for the sake of another makes no sense to me.

Quote
And if I'm perfectly honest, Rockman Online didn't look that great at all. It had some potential, but it needed a good bit of polishing up, and also it's a game more suited to the Korean MMO audience that it is to Western folk. The best looking things about Online were the animated trailers.
In terms of it's platform, you probably have a good point.

But there's more to it than that.  I know I wasn't the only one who, back before Legends 3 was announced, was more excited about RMO than about Universe.  For all the "enlightened" gamers who claim that narrative and gameplay are the be-all end-all of gaming's appeal, there is a HIGH level of character-based appeal to the medium.  Why else do you think that Mario's face is plastered on every sport known to man?  A familiar face opens the fan up to new experiences.  When they first stepped into the DS generation, though, Capcom took the complete opposite approach: Recast the franchise, uproot the aesthetic, and attach it all to the same old gameplay with minimal tweaks.  It was exactly what they shouldn't have done, as it alienates the existing fans without attracting new ones.  That's why Capcom is pulling a complete about-face with Ace Attorney, and why they tried and failed to do the same with Operate Shooting Star, and to a lesser extent Zero Collection/Mythos.  It's also why XOver's artwork is seen as a complete contradiction in target audience to the nature of its "casual" platform.  And it's why (along with the whole co-op gameplay thing) Rockman Online was a hot topic despite the english-speaking world knowing damn well they would never play it.

Rockman Online would probably never have been popular simply because PC MMOs are a dead genre outside of a few key franchises.  But there are some awesome concepts in there, and Capcom could honestly learn a thing or two from it.

I gather Rush isn't articulated (or at least not much) if he's a pack-in, but getting a Classic series 3-for-1 is still a pretty sweet deal.

The ONLY reason this figure is not terribly high on my collectibles list is because it's a bit redundant with me personally: I already have the old RS Rush and Kotobukiya's Rock.
