Gaming / Re: Nintendo Releases New Wii U Details: PB is Pleased

The lack of WiiU features in the "Wii mode" menu would suggest that it's pretty well isolated, but for some reason the system still requires you set up your Network ID before using it...

For those of you holding on to your Wii, the system transfer is all-or-nothing.  There seems to be no other way to migrate Miis into Wii mode's Mii Channel.  The Wii remote storage icon doesn't appear, and the 3DS and WiiU Mii Maker transfers are both outbound only.  You can copy 3DS Miis into the WiiU maker, though.

Also, seemingly every WiiU game requires a small update to communicate online.  The good news is, you can download said updates (and eShop games) while playing games at the same time.

Entering this on my WiiU!

Nintendo Network ID: Hypershell

Browser has a 9999 character limit, so I'll have to update the main list later.

I wonder, though, even if they had bought up the tech, would Sony and/or Microsoft have gotten it "out there" as well as Nintendo did.

I mean, I'm on the outside looking in on this one, but the impression I get from Playstation Move and even Vita's touch panels is that Sony doesn't really drive the non-traditional tech the way that Nintendo does.  Beyond the "me too" nature of what they're doing in the first place, they tend to come up short in terms of software that actually uses it.  Big N didn't just decide to throw the hardware in, they lead by example in software (a little late on Motion Plus and nonexistant on Speak, sadly), and very few third party devs took initiative on their own (which turned out to be the Wii's curse).  In Sony's hands, the same hardware seems to evaporate.  Then there's also the "price of admission" factor in terms of how much each company traditionally sells their systems for.

As for Microsoft, I don't doubt they could have pulled it off stateside, but Japan is hell bent on rejecting whatever they do.

Look, Reggie said any. I'm just going off of that.
As I understand, any USB2.0 hard drive that the WiiU is able to format to its own special system.  In theory you could keep PC stuff as a separate disc partition.
Speaking of which, WiiU will not use SD cards for WiiU saves.  Just for Wii stuff.  Which will undoubtedly [acid burst] off people who enjoyed sharing save data.
And the WiiU's OS reportedly takes up about half the basic model's storage.
According to IGN, at least.

I find it very odd that Nintendo would include an SD port for seemingly nothing but backwards compatibility.  I mean, they've been keen on the SD card format since the GBA days, and you'd think with their unwillingness to include a hard drive with the system, they'd want to leave their options for memory expansion open.

I guess it's my inner pyromaniac talking, but that's the best "batshit crazy" girl in the lineup if you ask me.

I was going to say something about how Dynamo's ability to not die no matter how many times he's blown up would be valuable in battle, but hell, that whole Navigators beating him to a pulp scene is just too good to pass on. 8)

Some days you just have no excuse (don't know how the hell I missed that).

For whatever reason Zero doesn't thumbs-up in Xtreme2 either.

In between X5 and X6 Zero lost his thumbs in an unfortunate smelting accident.

Okay, how do you get three posts into this thread without this one?

Jump to 0:16.
Sounds like Sigma sees some potential in Shadow...

For the less blatant mirrors and more "sorta similar style" vids, I have a few more:

I remember posting this one a while back in the general VG music thread, but it really does sound like the kind of thing I'd expect to hear in an NES-styled Mega Man 11.
[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pF-30Dg9Xs4[/youtube]

Speaking of that, Wily Fortress/Wily Machine.  Not sure which, but something with a lot of metal death traps either way.

Now for something a little more modern.  This sounds oddly appropriate for if X-series navigators had their own theme music:

(nevermind the fact that this kid has Classic/X boots, Jet Skates, Tron hair, and Bad Box Art MM's color scheme).

Said it before and I'll say it again: Zero1 is only hardcore if you give a damn about your rank.

But anyways, the permanent death thing certainly encourages you to use caution when you move.  ESPECIALLY in Radiant Dawn, as you spend most of Micaiah's chapters grossly underpowered.

You're full of [parasitic bomb]. Koei's Gemfire uses flanking and rear assaults, and that game deals with armies
Try to read it the first time so that Zomirby doesn't have to repeat me.

Fire Emblem has a variety of options in terms of how quickly you want the gameplay to go (movement speed, attack animations, and such).  I find the general pacing to be slow, but that's because I think a lot, and generally don't play a lot of strategy games, so yeah.

For the record, I agree with Zomirby; Shadow Dragon was pretty horrid compared to Path of Radiance/Radiant Dawn.  Despite the shiny visuals it's still evident, from a story/narrative standpoint, that it is based off of an NES game (further most of its new content is a reward for deliberately sucking at the game).  Nevertheless I was still hoping that FE12 would make it here, as it looked to have improved on many of those weaknesses, but it seems Nintendo fell to the "if the franchise stumbles just let it die" mentality during that timeframe.  I guess that's what we call hacking-bait, eh?

Not to bait or be a dick or anything, but am I the only person perturbed by strategy games that make absolutely no use of flanking and rear assaults?
I never saw it as odd in Fire Emblem because the combat takes place among individual soldiers, and a single human being (and I assume dragon/cat/whatever) can turn around very easily.  Flanking is something that affects the group, not the individual.

So while there is no "directional" modifiers for the individual battles, formation in terms of your team in general is of course very relevant.  You can get "flanked" in the sense that a unit at the edge of your line is vulnerable from more angles, therefore is liable to take more attacks in a single turn and die.  This is something you need to be conscientious of throughout the Fire Emblem games, and ESPECIALLY Radiant Dawn.  There's a lot of emphasis on terrain as well, including Radiant Dawn offering bonuses for elevation (IE; attacking someone from atop a ledge).

Oh, and in TvC, where there are TWO VERSIONS OF THE GESELLSCHAFT STAGE, there is absolutely no excuse to not include this:

And also this sadly under-appreciated piece:

Well, Zero's older brother riding X does sound oddly believable...

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

You of all people...! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
Saying that...! HAHAHAHAHAHA
Yeah, that's when you KNOW it's bad. :V

For the record, Zero's helmet was Flame's schtick, not mine.

I'm pretty sure that my pointless IHX nitpicky design bitching was those flexible gauntlets that you almost never see, or something...

You misunderstand. I simply find it cumbersome that he would wield both saber and buster on the same hand.
Just that damn good, I guess.

The anime scene is REALLY awesome, but evil Zero with no saber wave is just wrong.

But the attack in Command Mission was always intended to be a Shinku Hadoken duh
Yes, and Zero was always intended to be Roll.

X / Re: X4 is really overrated

The full and sole reason Z1 is challenging is because it punishes you for using any upgrades in the game other than weapon levels.  Inticreates' concept of difficulty simply blows.

The concept of X's compassion has been a part of the series from the get go. Irregular Hunter X accurately represents it at the time of the first game.
Yeah, I distinctly recall X3's manual mentioning X hating violence.  That and text epilogues of the SNES games basically amount to X questioning why Reploids have to kill each other.

It's a shame that the crappy localization masks it, but X6 was perhaps the best presentation of X's character.  Throughout the series, "hesitation" is the name of the game when showing off X's big heart, but X6 was one of the rare times that X was both determined and compassionate.

I liked the vocals a lot.  Although the whole "X is all over the cover/marketing but only gets two songs" thing does kinda bug me.

As this is the first rendition of X3 Zero in the IHX style, I'm eager to see mandatory discussion on the design of Zero's helmet.

Also, perhaps something about him using the saber in his right hand while we're at it.
I believe our last discussion of Zero's helmet in IHX established that it was only the promo art where his helmet looked bad (well, that and his game model, but EVERY IHX character model looks like [parasitic bomb]).

And is it REALLY necessary to destroy what little dignity the Mega Man fanbase has left by bringing them down to Zelda-fanboy-mirror-rage levels?  Zero has been sabering with both hands since X4.

And...honestly, I could keep this going all day.  Sigma Zero X has a good point; yes, Flutter Vs. Gesellschaft is awesome, but there ARE other themes.

You're on a boat, with Proto Man.  The man your man could smell like! :V

Sounds good to me.  I especially love the Mania+Xtremes idea, unfortunately Capcom would probably rather milk the 3DS Virtual Console (which I wouldn't mind except for the fact that they keep us waiting on the X-series games forever).

And oh yeah, DASH2 Episode 1.  It's the only Legends entry that CoA didn't contract out of digital existence (unless by some miracle they're willing to do a retail Legends collection).

...nobody said Shinku Hadoken was used in the mega man games...
...just,
play Command Mission
, will you?  It takes all the fun out of fan-gasming when you spend this many posts explaining it.

Thats not the Boss theme. That's the Sigma Battle theme. Learn the difference. Our Blood Boils is an awesome track, but the regular boss theme- is not.
Sigma is a boss, Flame.

Yes, I get what you're trying to say, but Karasai didn't specify.

There ARE Legends discussions where people don't bounce off the walls, you know.  It's just easy to destroy them.

And do you honestly expect the internet to NOT be flooded with "WHERE'S THE NEW GAME ANNOUNCEMENTS?!!" rage comments after December 17?  I mean, I'm calling that one right now if nobody else has.  The writing has been on the wall for over a month.

It's mainly the 2D levels, which with the exception of Stonekong, appear to have been done by poorly trained monkeys.

They made an ENTIRE STAGE out of the winding staircase gimmick from X4/X5.  How do you excuse that?
