X / Re: Lucas Gilbertson to redub "Iris death scene."
« on: January 20, 2009, 09:57:03 PM »
Well, it's hard to gauge Iris because we haven't heard Ashley Schroeder speak normally.  So there's no basis of comparison.

That being said, I think, "I wanted to live in a world where only Reploids exist" was a little too fluid for someone in pain/near death.  Otherwise she's not too shabby.

Oh, by the way, was I the only one who couldn't help but laugh at this?
running through the comments, I found a new sig quote. 8)

EDITS:  You know that talk about trying to harass him into redubbing the whole game so somebody could figure out how to hack it?
Well, I got a little impatient.

Oh sure, we all thought about it.  But I had the guts TO DO IT!!! >BD

- Mark Gatha as X (waiting for YouTube to process; they're doing site maintenance)

Today I finished hacking the PC version of X4 to add voice clips by Lucas Gilbertson, including his recent Zero/Iris death redub with Ashley Schroeder.

If by chance you have tracked down the PC X4, you can apply the hack for yourself with ease.  Download it here:

UPDATE FRIDAY, AUGUST 7:
Minor fix.  Door slam SFX crept its way into my recording of the Iris death scene, it's gone now.  No more MegaUpload links, either.

Favorite weapon from MegaMan Legends 2.  Merged into a single word due to the first board I joined not allowing spaces.  I decided to stick with it so that the grammar-nazis could differentiate between me and the weapon.

X / Re: You know, X and Zero's action poses?
« on: January 19, 2009, 09:12:31 PM »
The main problem is their leg positions. Say that Zero is facing you with his left leg forward. He's easy to trip due to only to press your left palm on his left forearm and having to take your right foot in a hook, slide it behind his ankle area, and slide your foot towards yourself. Using little to no power while doing this would cause his legs to split and him to fall forward.
Impossible.  Zero would flinch from contact with your palm, and your leg is not equipped to break damage barriers.

That and, barring X5, Zero lacks the sprites necessary to fall.

He'd be fine if his breathing movements didn't look like his legs fell asleep.

Who the [tornado fang] cares when you're dealing with COLLISION DAMAGE?!
I award Zan the internet (and at no extra charge, a magic fish for his own use).

1. Water Temple - The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time [N64]
Perhaps the king of frustration in any given category. To be honest I didn't have a lot of trouble figuring how to beat the Temple, it's just an unbelievable chore. Its appeal drowned somewhere between opening the menu to equip the Iron Boots way too often and flooding the place way too often. You could say it's an acceptable evil for a worthy climax, but... sadly, Morpha sucks just as much.
Better make that a top 11, because the Fire Barrier in Ganon's Tower from Master Quest EASILY upstages the Water Temple of old.  What's funny is that it's only a single room, but it just pisses me off that damn much.  The first Silver Rupee to grab is atop a platform that jets into the air, and even though it OBVIOUSLY intersects with your chest/face, you can evidently only collect items that hit your lower torso, so you need to Backflip (Jump Attack doesn't even work).

SO MUCH FUN figuring out that one!!! (was trying to do Master Quest guide-less) For quite a while I was wondering if they just decided to throw in a fake that the Lens of Truth couldn't pick up.  And if you happen to be a Hover Boots fan its fairly likely to backflip and still fail to grab it, until you learn where to stand.

All this over a pit of lava that costs you a heart per screwup.  I haven't died that slowly since Roll slapped me to death in L2.

Well, the NES was my introduction to gaming at home (no telling what my first arcade title was, although Spy Hunter and Pac Man hold the strongest memories).  We had ye olde SMB/Duck Hunt combo cartridge.

Heh, funny......I used to think the "quest" changed every time you beat the game.  Took a while before I realized there were only two.

Blue On The Run is high up there for me, too.  But I'm also a big fan of That's How It Started and It's Come To......  aw hell, I love all the Secret Rings boss themes. >w<  Poison Spear is probably lowest on the list, but it's tough to rank the others.

Indeed. 8)

Sprites exist to look cool, not to be practical.  If you're stuck arguing against the brain-dead who do not realize this, bequeath them a boot to the head and move on.

......

Do you REALLY need to be putting this much thought into it?  Zero's poses include constantly looking over his shoulder in Xtreme2/PS1, and in his own series, feigning a dislocated shoulder.

They skip a few notes and they tend to ignore background instruments.  Other than that, kickass.

Wanted to, however my head is freaking killing me and I'm basically fighting to stay awake...

This also reminds me that no one ever sends me replays or likes getting mine anymore. :(
I love sending/receiving Replays, 'cept I disabled Wii Connect 24 after Nintendo's iron-fisted Privacy Policy/TOS update.

'tis a shame, 'cuz I got some awesome ones.  Including a recovery interception via crate. 8)

REPENT!

For you know very well that the day of Lucas will come like a thief in the night.

( I'd give the Revelation 16 version, but we have enough shameful exposure as it is between Vix and PB.  =P )

Anyone up for a match tonight?  Been hooked on OoT Master Quest as of late, but I could use some more Smashing practice.

Although I do miss the Genesis days where the final boss music didn't include lyrics but was final boss music with a cool theme.
I gotta admit, a STH3 final boss remix would be pretty badass....

If we were to have him record something for the site, I think we need to fit in a "It's Not Over Yet" or "Sounds Like Maverick Talk To Me!" in there somewhere!  XD
Silly PB, you forgot one:

If I weren't in a good mood you'd have met my magic fish for that one. :P

Usually I enjoy the use of the main theme as a final boss battle BGM, but there are exceptions.  Unleashed is definitely one of them, I hate its main theme.  The actual final boss theme used is decent, not the most epic, but it suffices.

The other is Sonic Heroes, the title theme works as a title theme, but for battle, What I'm Made Of was infinitely better (WHY they didn't use it instead of the Sonic Heroes theme for Brawl, I will never know).

The game that definitely SHOULDN'T have replaced the title theme is Adventure, for Perfect Chaos part 2.  The spontaneous switch really breaks the flow, and the second BGM blows anyway.

Its like why the hell Sonic needs to race in a CAR when he can run faster than one. which applies to Sonic Riders too. why the hell does he need an air board when  he can run past the speed of sound?

Most awesome 2-second vid ever. 8)

That's one of the reasons why I loved the first episode of Sonic X so much (Jap BGM works much better than US for that scene, though).

On the other hand, it's also a criticism that can be taken all the way back to Game Gear days....

i'm thinking SS could bust out some slick sword moves. all Segs has to do is watch a few episodes of the Future Trunks arc.

*pictures SS vertically bisecting the Black Knight*
This.
but this is Sega, that won't happen.
...and this. ;O;

leave the weapons to Shadow.
Ordinarily, I'd agree.  But just for the sake of buzz-saw spin attacks, I'm willing to try the sword.

As for Shadow, well, I realize Sega thinks that guns give him an edgey tone, but why the hell does he need them?  If you want to run with the projectile mechanic (didn't mind it in ShTH; never played Sonic '06), he has Chaos Spear.

vocal Knight of the Wind > instrumental Knight of the Wind
(EDITS: Speaking of themes, I just got the idea of looking up the Sonic Unleashed theme on YouTube.  As soon as I'm done cleansing my ears with peroxide, I'm signing up Matt Cassamasina for yet another boot to the head for claiming that such a pile of puke somehow beats the 80's rock style themes.)

The idea of full armor being the possible final form isn't my favorite, but I guess we can't have Darkspine Sonic in every storybook game, can we?

Absolutely beautiful.  Lucas sure is kind to the fans to be doing this. 8)

At least I must admit that out of all three (it was three, wasn't it?)
Four if you count Model Z.

I suggest that RPM and all other Rockman communities start raising a fund to hire this man as well as some skilled programmers to entirely redub both X4 and X7 Zero with Gilbertson's voice and put the audio into the games. Oh, and should there be some money left, let's get Mark Gatha in the boat as well so he can redeem our dirtied souls from X4's girly X.
I sincerely doubt we could raise enough to make it worth their while.  Still, it's fun to dream.

Oh, and on the programming end, you don't need very skilled programmers at all if you're going for PC X4.  Those are just WAVs, possibly with the file extension changed (I don't remember, I replaced the X4/X5 PC soundtracks in ages past; The Wish Punished is AWESOME as Iris battle BGM).  And the videos are easily edit/swap-able as well.  It'd be no problem.

Quote
On a side note, I think the way he calls out for Iris at 0:47 is kind of funny because it sounds like he's scolding her for falling asleep or something.
0:47 I think, between the original and Lucas's, are different takes on desperation.  The original has Zero a bit more fearful, whereas Lucas does him more commanding in a "snap out of it" kind of way.  I don't think it's bad in and of itself, it's just awkward to be following Lucas being considerably more emotion than the original on the "it's only a fantasy" line.  I can sorta see him getting choked up over that seeings how it's the reason they were stuck against each other, though.

With something like this you need to let it soak in.  First impressions will always be awkward because any change from what's been established in one's mind raises a red flag.

The only part of Lucas's performance I would actually criticize is the first Iris call, around 0:42, only because Zero's facial expression seems stronger than the vocal.  But the scene overall is a vast improvement.
