Starfox 2.

Fay and Miyu would've been better than where Krystal has taken the series. Although we did get Lucy Hare, so I can't smack talk too much about it all.
What's awesome is that the fans basically completed that with translation patches, so even though we don't get to pay Nintendo for what a nice job they did (why the HELL didn't they put it on VC, anyway?), one can get a taste of it.  How good a taste that is depends on your setup.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned this, but ye olde MegaMan Mania for GBA.  Sure, it's a compilation, but I'd have been itching for it regardless.

.....I should've stayed to play Brawl.......
Ouch.  Well, I knew Grimlock wouldn't be there (BASTARDS!), but I thought it was good considering.

If anyone wants a round tonight (by a reasonable hour, work starts early), just say the word.  All I have to do today is grocery shop, and that's obviously flexible.

I don't know what's with this whole "I can't catch you" stuff.  You're talking as if it doesn't take skill to be evasive.  And when you're dodging a giant hammer with half your normal jump distance, I must argue to the contrary.

But fair enough, I intend to scope out Revenge of the Fallen myself.  However I WILL be back, and next time I'll be able to do Replays over the 3 Minute mark. :P

I know how that goes.  When I was too young to be left alone, my mom used to try her hand at Super Mario Bros.  Those days are LONG, LONG gone...

And yeah, I won't deny that I'm a Nintendo nut myself, but there has to be a first game played on every system, right?

The fact that you have a tendency to score the winning KO at about ten seconds to go doesn't hurt any, either. ;)

And hey, if you can't catch a shrunken Yoshi in Green Hill, that's your problem. :P  I'm two months out of practice here and I can still run circles around you in Palkia's mirror-world.

I can join in for an hour!  I'll be right on!  XD
Convenient that you won all the TIMED matches.  That'll teach me to play without infinite replays on. >_<

Oh well.  No matter what the videos say, I'll always know the beating your Toon Link took at the hands of me and Palkia.  8)

Awesome matches, man.  Everything from the many Super Dragon roastings to the bizarre stalled out Triforce Slash (what the hell happened there, anyway?).

Now, you gonna talk or play?  'cuz I need to know if I should quit this craptacular Random, and it's been AGES since you and I went at it. 8)

FEAR MY RETURN!!!

At long last, my Wii and internet are back under the same roof (complete with brand spankin' new router).  Soon as I wake up Saturday I'm punching in the new connection settings, and getting my butt back into Brawl. 8)

BTW, has anyone seen Akamaru lately?  'cuz I am hoping to find the teammate to crush PB and Lou at some point, if anyone can tell me how the crap you play Team Battle against Friends online (I could have sworn that didn't work before, but whatever).

Anyways, I'm online now, retraining from my couple-month Brawling absence.  If anyone wants to join, drop me a line.

Gaming / What software sold your hardware?
« on: June 27, 2009, 07:42:27 PM »
So here's a nice, "tell us about your gaming history" thread.  They say software sells hardware.  (Some of us know that sometimes hardware failure sells hardware. *eyes his DSi*)  There's some special game out there with every system you buy.  A gem we knew we couldn't call ourselves respectable gamers/nerds without, or sometimes even a consolation prize while we wait for the big guns.  So, let's hear about it!

As the youngest in my family, I just leeched off of my brother's systems for the most part.  It was quite a while before I had gaming hardware to call my own, but here we go:

Gameboy Color - Pokemon Blue
Well, my brothers each had their own brick-Gameboys that they weren't particularly protective over.  One had a bunch of lines on the screen, though.  When Pokemon came, I thought nothing of it.  Then I watched the show.  Couldn't stop.  Found myself buying a Player's Guide before I even had the game.  Got the game, but I needed to be able to TRADE, right?  GBC was out by then, so I saved up yard sale money, fumed that the link cable plug was different (hey, I didn't have the internet back then to check this stuff), got the adapter, and the rest is history.  My, how I enjoyed demolishing my brother with my Rare Candied Dragonite.... 8)

Genesis - Sonic 3 & Knuckles
Every Christmas, Birthday, and any excuse for gift-giving, it was always the same.  Sure, we all liked Nintendo's stuff, and my love of plumbers riding dinosaurs wasn't going anywhere.  But I wanted Sonic.  Watched the cartoons, leeched off of friends, drooled over the store demos.  Begged my parents at every opportunity.  One day, it finally came, and there was only one game (well, two "locked on" together) that came to mind.  Blasting through Flying Battery as Super Tails just never got old.

An honorable mention to Toejam & Earl, as well.  Lots of fond memories there.

Gameboy Advance - Super Mario Advance
Oh sure, I liked SMB2, but there was more than that.  See, I loved SMB3's battles, and always wanted to get my hands around some incarnation of the old arcade Mario Bros.  These days I play it more for SMB2, though.  I was particularly anxious for this due to hardware failure, as well: a nasty fall cost my GBC half its screen, so I'd been leeching my brother's again.  This one is still with me, though the shoulder buttons are shot to hell.

Playstation - MegaMan Legends 2
Okay, so this was a hand-me-down when my bro hooked up his PS2.  But even if it wasn't, I craved X and Legends like a fish craves water, I wasn't going to be left without it.  Never.  And Legends 2 is easily the champion of them all.  The Geetz fight never gets old.  Hell, half the boss fights in the game never get old.  The thing is an absolute masterpiece.

Dreamcast - Sonic Adventure
Another hand-me-down, but ever since I saw the first Sonic Adventure screenshot, I knew I had to find a way to play it.  And I damn well did.  Played but never owned the original SA2.  However I did nail both on GCN, and as a result, this thing pretty much stays tucked away now.

Gamecube - Super Smash Bros. Melee
What else?  My brother got this at launch for Rogue Leader, and as time went on it occurred to me we wouldn't live under the same roof forever.  I had long since bought Melee, at release, with my own money, and NO WAY IN HELL was I going to take the chance of being stuck without Melee. 8)  So, next birthday check from Grampa, I came home with a lovely black box, and tricked it out with a GB Player, too.

Nintendo DS - Super Mario 64 DS
As you know, I am a raving Yoshi lunatic.  Yoshi playable in an enhanced Super Mario 64?  Hell yeah, no way I was passing that up.  WINGED Yoshi was even more exciting (too bad it's multi-player only, damn Power Flowers...).

GBA SP - MegaMan Xtreme 2
Yeah, you read that right.  As the DS showed me the glory of a "back light" for my GBA games, I craved it for the one GBC game that outranked any MegaMan action the GBA ever dished out: Xtreme2.  I had money set aside from a trip that I hadn't spent, so I sank it into one of those backlit models that was released alongside the GB Micro.

Wii - Zelda/Excite Truck
I'm one of those guys that never really accepted the Wind Waker style.  So Twilight Princess was huge.  Twilight Princess with a wand to swing as my sword?  Even more huge.
But Zelda was coming to Gamecube as well, even if later.  So I have to give this one a respectable tie with Excite Truck.  I love high-adrenaline racers.  Boost blasting monster trucks, shifting and crumbling terrain all around, and your own custom soundtrack?  I wasn't about to miss that.

Slim PS2 - MegaMan X8/Namco X Capcom
Yep, I didn't get my own PS2 until after I had my Wii.  I'd long since been leeching my brother's for X8.  Not only did I need my own for that, but I'd been drooling over NxC for ages.  So the very split-second my own PS2 was home (thank Uncle Sam for that economic stimulus), the order for a flip-top cover and an imported disc were sent.  New cover was installed immediately, and I enjoyed the kickassiest strategy crossover of all time.

Nintendo DSi - still trying to figure that one out
I mainly picked this up to replace my original DS, which got severe cracks in the top screen during my move.  I love the new features, I really do, but Nintendo really needs to release some DSi-specific software that's actually worthwhile.  Did pick up Dr. Mario Express, but that's more of a diversion than anything.

I do own it, yes!  Blame the first one's god awful [tornado fang]ing control scheme for making me never want to play the 2nd one.  Unless the control scheme got an overhaul in the 2nd one, it'll probably just serve it's purpose and be part of the collection.
You have to play it for it to count. :P  Play, beat it, F#$)*ING breathe it.

Controls?  Jump and hit Jump again to air-dash, both double-tap and Down+Jump are there for ground dashing, and Select for the ever-awesome Scramble Change.  That's as good as a GBC control scheme is ever going to get.

That's me though, the one who thinks MM is a million times better than OoT, and that not much compares to LttP -u-'
I don't, but I have to give credit where credit is due.  MM has BOSS REMATCHES, which is something Zelda desperately needs.  I have a save slot in TP for the full and sole purpose of challenging Stallord, for crying out loud.

Anyways, love TP's graphics style.  But the artwork?  Charming in its own way, but I think there's room for improvement.  It has this unrefined look to it, like MMZ1's mugshots.

Remixed Mewtwo theme......must listen to when the wife isn't sleeping next room over.  >.>

There's still EQ to handle Steels, as well as Fire-type attacks. Superpower just forces Dragonite to either switch or constantly use Dragon Dance, so I wouldn't say that's a good thing <.<
As if Outrage is a good long-term attack anyway?  Most battles don't last that long, especially not when everyone and their dog knows to keep a few Ice Beamers handy.

You'd want two anti-Steel attack types to guarantee full coverage, and NOT Fighting with Ground (due to Bronzong and Skarmory), so it has to be Fire and something else.  EQ is nice, but in Doubles, you can't use it without hammering a non-Flying/Levitating partner.  The extra Fighting coverage against Ice and Dark is always a plus, too.  Even with just Brick Break (more for the sake of knowing your target, since a 2x Brick Break doesn't outdamage a 1.5x Outrage), my Dragonite/Blissey combo has torn apart a Dark Void opener.  With Superpower it gets even more devastating.

Quote
Odds are it'll be an event pokemon about 6 months after the game gets released, if they don't put it in there.
I wonder.  There's already an event Dragonite for the purpose of legitimizing him in Nintendo's non-adjusting Level 50 tournaments (I made sure to go to TrU and get a legit one, and he rocks).  But it could happen.

ZX / Re: Favorite Character?
« on: June 20, 2009, 10:01:36 PM »
Because who cares about characters that actually have personalities anyway?
Aile has quite a personality, I think.  In either scenario we always have one male player and one female player (either Vent meeting Ashe or Aile meeting Grey), but I've always thought of Aile/Grey as being the "proper" one simply because I think Aile is the better match to Model X than Vent.  Aile tends to be cautious about her own dark potential, something which links her to X.

You wouldn't know any of this from ZXA by itself, though.  Besides eye candy and Rising Fang, that game didn't do either Vent or Aile any favors.

ZX / Re: Hate to ask, but.....

I beat Zero/ZX Hard Mode solely for the sake of bragging rights/unlockables, then I always replay on Normal/Ultimate.  Inti's concept of a Hard Mode has always bothered me; they always achieve it by handicapping the player's abilities.  In ZX they got a little better, at least leaving your offensive abilities intact, but axing the Life Ups is still annoying.  All of your health is left in reserves, which means whenever you use them you have to stop and rebuild them, which gets exceedingly annoying.  If they really wanted to limit your available life energy, I'd have rather they left the Life Ups and axed all items and Sub Tanks completely, rather than leaving you with one tank and a bunch of fetch-quest food items.

So I am not the only one currently stuck at hard mode Chronoforce... Original ZX hard mode was pretty difficult as well, but I keep dying at this stage of Advent. Maybe some other time I will decide to see the secret ending on my DS screen.
If it makes you feel any better, you only have to suffer through that once (well, twice, counting the Ouroboros rematch).  When you clear Hard Mode, the extra ending is added to all other modes as well.

And don't forget, you get the third MegaMan a segment as well. 8)

You still don't have Super Mario Galaxy.   :P
And do YOU have Xtreme2 yet?

You'd better, 'cuz you certainly have the easier end of the deal. :P

The Werehog was born out of the "need" to replace the supporting cast. Let's face it, there are people out there who like the supporting cast, even if there isn't really not all that many people like that around here. Hence the Werehog and it's brokenass levels.
There is definitely some level of sense to that.  The split-second Werehog gameplay videos were shown, my first thought was, "Why didn't they just use Chaos?"

Personally, I don't think the supporting cast of Sonic is a problem, it's a symptom.  A question: How many people [sonic slicer] about Blaze?  Not many that I know of.  And there's nothing the least bit special about her character design, it's her implementation.  Because Blaze was handled the same way Tails and Knuckles were back in S3&K: abilities that are useful and distinctive (unlike the varying teams in Sonic Heroes) without being so radical as to necessitate a completely alien play style (unlike, well, nearly everything else).

Nintendo should really consider making more Paper series with Zelda being the next, but then people would [sonic slicer] and moan that they're using the idea too much. *sigh*
With Toon Link out there already, I don't really see the point.  But then I'd probably prefer a Paper Link to Toon Link.

ZX / Re: Favorite Character?
« on: June 20, 2009, 12:03:10 AM »
Aile is my favorite character, although besides the excessively long transformation video I don't think ZXA did her any favors.  Vent really one-upped her special move, and her NA voice is horrid.  Still, Aile always holds a strong place with me.

Favorite boss is Hedgeshock.  So evil and yet so adorable, I love it.  Wish like heck she could wall-kick...

3846
Both are correct.  The metagame will change since the moves change, but it'll always remain the same: A bunch of incessant whining about which way is the "proper" way to play.

and Dragonite was no longer the only one that could do Dragon Dance AND Outrage, so it pretty much gave it the middle finger even moreso.

Platinum may have handed out Outrage to his competitors, but it also gave Dragonite Superpower.  When the only thing you can't STAB Outrage into oblivion is Steel, that's not something to be overlooked.

Still hoping we'll see the return of Extremespeed Dragonite, though, but seeings how they already said FU to Crystal with the whole female player shpiel, I'm not all that hopeful.  We'll see.  Either way, I'm buying this game.  G/S music remixes and any Pokemon following you is just too damn awesome to pass up.

It comes bundled to the freaking sequel of Wii Sports, that alone guarantees millions of people have M+. Then it's also bundled with the newest EA games, which you know many people buy, and I think it was also bundled with Red Steel 2, which many are hyped for. So yeah, I don't think that'll be much of a problem even if it isn't bundled, it worked for Majora's Mask.
I guess it's just me, but in that entire list Red Steel was the only thing that had me the least bit interested, and that was marginally so.

3rd party bundles are a surprise, I must say, I guess Nintendo really is serious about it.  Then again, and maybe this is just me personally, but I think Zelda could push M+ distribution a lot harder than any of those titles mentioned above.

And about Wii Sports, it's big, but that's because outside of Japan it's free.  Wii Play, next best seller, is effectively 10 bucks with purchase of remote.  Wii Sports Resort is effectively $30 with purchase of M+, so they are pushing the value position further than their previous two casual heavy-hitters did.

I guess part of me questions the necessity of the device beyond swordplay (and frankly is still peeved that Nintendo didn't try a little harder with Twilight Princess; even without 1:1, some sense of direction should have been doable).  All I hear about for M+ is sports titles.  Well, my favorite sports games on the Wii thus far are Punch-Out!! and Mario Power Tennis.  Neither accept, or need, M+.  So I need to see more, and I'm hoping the new Zelda delivers.  Red Steel 2 is fine and dandy, but I'm just more of a fantasy gamer.  It's not that I don't see the potential, I do.  It's just that, like the Wii mic, I'm not seeing the practice.  Yet.  Hoping that changes.

I thought chronoforce could slow down time as well when you fought him.
Been over this before.

Time Bomb always slows time, but the game proceeds at the player character's perception whether you're on the giving or receiving end of it.  So, in effect, Chronoforce Time Bombs and you perceive it as him moving like a madman.

And yes, Expert Mode Chronoforce is perhaps the most aggravating boss ever outside of a few pause-trick-less MM1 psychos.

By the time it comes out, everyone will have MotionPlus, so I think it's good.
I'm not confident of that just yet.  As excited as I am about MotionPlus, software sells the hardware, not the other way around, and I've yet to see a must-have game for the device.

Of all blasted times to show Link without a sword...  1:1 Zelda swordplay would EASILY sell the thing out in no time flat.  Ah well, either way, they'll probably package the Zelda game in a bundle, unless it doesn't see release for a REALLY long time, anyway.

I hope they offer us a choice at the beginning of the game. I also hope they don't mirror the locations as well as Link again. XD
I never understood why they couldn't just mirror the character...  o-O

Well, I do hope they supply that option.  'cuz it would be weird to motion with one hand while the character moves the opposite hand, but it'd be nice to correct that without having the sun come up in the West.

let's hope they keep Lonk left handed this time.
I'll never understand this attitude.  Even though Link uses his left hand more often than not, the nature of sprite-mirroring left Link somewhat ambidextrous in NES and SNES games, and even in OoT he Hookshots with his right hand.
