Mmm...  Pasta...

Mmm...  Forbidden Donut...
I think you mean his SECOND form, Hyper...
Yes, I did, sorry.  I'm in the habit of thinking of human-sized as the first and giant monsters as the final; Albert reverses that trend.

3177
Once again, I don't think that kind of raw number manipulation is really fitting for in-game.  It's really more Smogon material.  But then, I could say the same thing about the 510 cap itself.

Stat experience/EVs, even if no total limit was implemented, still has a purpose in-game as it gives you an edge over similarly and over-leveled opponents.  If grinding is an issue they can always simply lower the limit.

3178
You really need to bear in mind that Power **** items, Macho Brace, and Pokerus never existed in combination with stat experience.  If they did, you could alleviate grinding every bit as easily.  More so, in fact, because you wouldn't have to be picky about your opponents.  Macho Brace would be pretty damn tanked up in such a system, doubling every stat gain.

Manually capping all stats would be a bit too "unnatural" to really fit with the feel of games.  But some kind of daycare/gym/tutor might help.  Hell, even making the stat-reducing berries buyable would help.

Another problem with the current EV system, though, is the inability to re-adjust.  Vitamins cannot take you beyond 100 points out of 255, far from ideal.  Beyond that, you need battle experience.  Which means if you experiment too many times after reaching Level 50, you must rely on auto-level matches, thus disqualifying you from certain tournaments (although WHY they enforce such a bone-headed rule is beyond me).  Also, EVs tie to experience gain, effectively punishing you for having an actual Level 100 Pokemon, since at that point they will no longer collect EVs from battle.

Actually, he wasn't necessarily apprehended due to Irregular activity, but merely for defying orders and wrecking havoc at the scene if I'm not mistaken.
Which could easily be a criminal act, by your own argument making him Maverick.  Sigma certainly sees such potential, at least.  Zero also described him as borderline Maverick, and we all know he's not exactly the model of restraint.

Quote
Like I said, it could merely be blamed on game mechanics
Which really is logic enough since MegaMan is first and foremost a video game.  But for what it's worth the giant mechaniloid in MHX did not explode, and the Hunters did use weapons aimed at restraint.  Didn't seem too effective.

Quote
Interestingly, he pretty much abandonned that way of thinking in transit from X7 to X8 and Command Mission. Especially the Command Mission X always seemed to be more of the "shoot first, ask questions later" kind, at least to me.
In X8 he's still holding to it pretty strong.  If anything he strikes me as a bit gullible in how easily he was swayed by Lumine.

In Command Mission X does seem more all-business, but then it is a good deal in the future.  He doesn't hesitate as much as usual.  Still, I didn't see him as lacking compassion.  He does question Scarface and Epsilon as to their motives, trying to understand what's going on in their heads.  And of course he takes in numerous allies regardless of questionable background (Spider and Marino in particular).  If he is more aggressive it may be due to Shadow's betrayal and watching Zero get shot off a cliff.  Plus the handiwork of Jango, Silverhorn, and Psyche don't exactly present Rebellion in a good light either.  As I mentioned earlier there is only so much that X will overlook.  Sigma's the most obvious example but it's not just him.  When X sees a great deal of death and suffering his doubts tend to get cast aside (one would think that is only natural; as the stakes rise decisive action becomes more important).  X4's Sky Lagoon crash is another such example.

Quote
Because Sigma is the Irregular Numbero Uno. X knows he can't enter into diplomatic negotiations him in order to prevent Sigma from dropping another freaking colony on Earth. Destruction of Sigma is necessary to help the world at least a bit in the direction of peace. As long as Sigma is around, the world is destined to be engulfed by war and destruction. Not to mention that Sigma deceived and betrayed him and the other Hunters.
Exactly.  My point is, how is Sigma less evil than Copy X?  At least when Sigma sways others he's usually forced to override their will.  Copy X is even more dangerous because he actually swayed heroes and the general public to not only condone but partake in the suffering and murder of innocents.  Nevermind the fact that he does so in X's name.  How is X supposed to let that slide?

X / Re: Maverick Hunter X6. Nightmare System

Well, it doesn't make sense to me, that they would re-word the same entry twice.  Given the track record from pretty much every other console MegaMan game from X5 onwards, a similar blow-out in X6's descriptions both on packaging and pre-release doesn't strike me as odd at all.

What have boxes, manuals, introductions, and pre-release announcements told us about other MegaMan games?
-The Maverick Wars lasted for centuries prior to Eurasia (X5)
-X mysteriously disappeared (X7)
-2 player co-op (X7)
-2 player co-op AGAIN (X8)
-5 new playable characters, 1 female (Command Mission)
-Island bathrooms are acceptable as evil headquarters (Xtreme2)
-Various name mistranslations (X5 Mavericks, X5 4th Armor, numerous Legends characters)

That's just off the top of my head.  In light of that, I would not put much merit in an exaggeration of X6's existing features.

Flame basically nailed it.  Ciel's use of the R.O.C.K. System comes from researching Model W.  The fact that she used that research in making her own Biometal is specifically stated in-game.

There is no reason Albert has to be aware of the existence of any other Biometals to mark multiple Chosen Ones since his plan involves the use of multiple MegaMen fighting each other to begin with.  Albert simply planned to give them all Model W fragments, and the existence of Ciel's Biometal presented a unique opportunity.  When exactly Albert became aware of Ciel's Biometal is not stated, but he did at some point collect data on them; his first second form in ZX Advent has an attack borrowed from all seven of the other Models.

"After speaking with a few "friends", we've come to the conclusion that the above information may or may not have been actual content intended to appear in the game. It's quite possible the sources of said information might have misinterpreted official X6 announcements, blowing them out of proportion."

In other words, could very easily be X7/X8 co-op syndrome.

Especially since item 2 on that list basically IS the final Nightmare System.  I'm not sure why Protodude was claiming that such a feature is absent; maybe he means permanent changes and not ones which can be overridden by another effect?

X / Re: Robot Prejudice: Has this been explored in the X series?
« on: November 06, 2009, 09:39:25 PM »
X7 says no such thing.  It simply refers to "crimes perpetrated by Mavericks".  Mavericks are criminals.  Criminals are not necessarily Mavericks.

As far as the capturing thing goes, they did that once:  Vile.

Capturing one intent on fighting to the death, and armed to do so, is no easy task.  A Reploid built for combat would be tough to disable without killing, given that they often carry weapons linked to their body.  It's not like getting a person to drop a gun.  If luck's with you maybe you could blow its limbs off, but game mechanics dictate that at three limbs the rest of the body explodes if you're not fighting a playable character.

As for X, Copy X swayed a lot of good people into supporting prejudiced mass murder.  I don't think the death penalty is at all extreme at that point.  X dislikes fighting and killing, but even he has his limits about how much he'll tolerate.  You never see him hesitate in the face of Sigma after X1, do you?

3184
So. About those egg moves.

Yeah.
Egg moves are not a prerequisite on every Pokemon.  Sometimes they are useful and sometimes they are not.  Some Pokemon have none at all.

And besides, breeding is usually available relatively early in the game.  It's not like you have to beat the Elite Four before you can get an egg.

I'm not saying your entire Elite Four team should be tournament material.  I'm saying that *A* Pokemon you played the game with should be viable.

What about your starter?  If you intend to use a starter evolution for multiplayer, you basically have to breed a new one, even if you don't intend to use a single egg move.  What is the point of that?  If you're crazy enough to breed for IVs, fine.  Some people will just find something remotely beneficial with a proper Nature and leave it at that, which is what you pretty much have to do if you intend to battle with a non-breedable Pokemon anyway.

Quote
It's actually worse than that. You only get 127 bonus points to distribute among your attributes, so if you accidentally kill something that gives you EVs in the wrong stat, you permanently screw yourself. And the game doesn't [tornado fang]ing tell you ANYTHING about this.
This is exactly my point.  You're pretty much guaranteed to get the wrong EVs in normal gameplay, therefore, Pokemon used in gameplay are worthless unless you berry the hell out of them.  It shouldn't be that way.  If you were negligent in IVs/Nature, fine, that's your own problem.  But EVs are nearly impossible to work around.

But that gets me started on how shitty I think the lack of legacy in 3rd generation was. Why was it so hard to handle it that time around?
Because of the change in how the "randomization" as you put it was handled.

In 1st and 2nd gen, EVs did not exist as they do currently, instead there was a stat-experience system that gained by the base stats of the Pokemon you defeated in battle.  All had their individual caps, of course, but there was no total cap, and you always gained SOMETHING in every stat from every battle.  With EVs, an individual stat caps at 255 but your total caps at only 510 (allowing you to max only two stats), and a Pokemon defeated will usually only give you EVs in a single stat; rarely 2 or 3, never more than that.

Also, the IV (Individual Value, this is randomization irrelevant of battle experience; or why two wild Pokemon of the same species and level may have slightly different stats) range was expanded.  1st and 2nd gen ranged from 0 to 15.  In 3rd gen on, it's 0 to 31.

Personally, I like the EV system since it at least gives non legendary pokes a chance at taking on the Legendaries without struggling like they should. Plus it adds a layer of complexity that the game normally wouldn't have before.

It's really fun to take out an all legendary with an EV trained team. The look on the other guy's face is priceless.
The EV system has nothing to do with that, as legendaries can be EV-trained just the same.  That and numerous legends were weakened in the shift from 1st to 2nd generation.  Specifically, all three of the birds and Mewtwo.  Everyone thinks Arceus is so big and bad, but the truth is Mewtwo would still surpass him if his Special Defense hadn't been slaughtered.  And that's ignoring R/B/Y Amnesia physics.  There is nothing more evil than a first-gen Mewtwo.

Their happiness goes up when I give them vitamins!
Yeah, but vitamins won't get you more than 100 EVs, so you're actually helping Keno's point there.  Whatever it is.  >.>

x2 for pokerus
I hate Pokerus.  I have better things to do than harvest stealthy-but-stupid single celled organisms amongst my Pokemon.

Understanding what's going on doesn't ruin the game, it makes it better.
Do yourself a favor and don't read too many guides about X5.

I thought that Rare Candies worked the same as leveling in 1st gen.
Nope.  In 1st and 2nd gen you have stat experience, which basically plays the role that EVs do in 3rd gen and on.  Except the stat experience lacked a total cap.

Quote
I'm playing Crystal right now. How do they work in that?
Each stat has its own "invisible" experience.  Whenever one of your Pokemon defeats an opponent, all of its stats gain experience equal to the base stats (that is, the strengths of a Pokemon's species) of the opponent.  Each stat can gain a maximum of 65,535 experience.  Vitamins can get you up to 25,600 experience in a single stat.

it still stands that Reploids have to be concerned about possibly being labeled Maverick unjustly.
That much is true whenever any established agency makes an accusation.  And unjust accusations have been touched upon in the X-series as covered above.  But prejudice would mean that Reploids are being singled out, and since the term Maverick by definition does not apply to humans, I don't see that to be the case.

In MegaMan Zero, what makes the actions prejudice are not the lack of humans being labeled as Maverick, but rather, that Reploids are being disposed of for no reason other than their energy consumption.  Labeling them as Maverick is simply the means to that end.

X / Re: Maverick Hunter X6. Nightmare System
« on: November 06, 2009, 08:20:43 PM »
So, X6 and the Nightmare System. From what we already know based on interviews and such, it was originally planned to ACTUALLY randomize stage layouts and actually do something more than minor annoyances in stages such as fireballs, acid rain and blinds.
I don't consider that claim reliable.  I know of no such interview, only the game description on the back of the box.  And X6 is far from the first time that materials included with the game have been inaccurate (in fact since X5 they have been notoriously bad), so I'm wondering if that whole thing isn't just a botched translation.

Assuming we did see an X6 remake, the Nightmare System could at least stand a few tweaks to make it more user-friendly even without having to change the core effects.  At the very least some indicator of what effect is going on in the stage select menu is warranted.  Or, you could manually choose an effect based on what stages you have cleared rather than having to base it on the last stage visited.  The ability to do effect-less stages again would make a nice unlockable, I suppose.  Maybe for New Game Plus or as an extra reward for 3,000 Nightmare Souls.

Where the hell is Shelly when you need him?
My sinuses were socking it to me yesterday, sorry.

the very one who has a particular part you need in order to finish the game.

I've been over this before, that scenario is *IMPOSSIBLE*.  These are the only parts you can lose in X6:
-Rapid 5
-Shot Eraser
-Power Drive
-Speedster
-Quick Charge
-Overdrive
-Damage Converter
-1 Life Up
-2 Energy Ups

Absolutely none of that is required to beat the game.  Speedster is the only one remotely relevant to jump distance, and that's assuming you are not dash-jumping.

Quote
One other thing I hated was Gate's first stage where you have the giant spikes right there. Without the Shadow Armor or Zero, you're boned, and if those undestroyable blocks are on MSP's stage, then you can't finish the Shadow Armor, and unless it's impossible to be locked out of fighting Nightmare Zero, it'll take hell and forever to climb up that thing (at the very least, the first [tornado fang]ing spiked wall; if you can somehow let the enemies live then you can just take damage and run up the things) if it's even possible.
*sighs*  Amateur.

1. In no way whatsoever is it ever impossible to complete the Shadow Armor.  No stage has only one Nightmare Effect.

2. You can furthermore clear that wall with Blade Armor alone.

3. You can also clear using any form of X whatsoever with the combination of Jumper and Ice Burst.

4. You CANNOT clear it with barrier abuse alone, because the damage barrier protects you from spikes but does not allow you to wall-kick against them.  The only point of that is extra reassurance, particularly with Blade Armor.

Pretty creative use of Ice Burst, I must say...

That's why I love X6.

If one gets killed/possessed, just quit the game and use the 'use previous data' option to get right back in there.  It's not really that complicated.
In all fairness I realized in a recent replay that this option is not available on X Collection.  Only on PS1 (or if by chance you have it, PC).

Still, I can't imagine one would get too far into X6 before realizing that they SHOULD be saving after every stage.  Any game that throws that much crap at you, you do not want to take the chance of losing your progress.

X / Re: Robot Prejudice: Has this been explored in the X series?
« on: November 06, 2009, 07:38:51 PM »
That's because the meaning of the term "Maverick" generally does not apply to humans.  Z3 and Z4 are the exceptions as the use of the word changes over time, but it originated as the term for an out-of-control Reploid which threatens humanity; it is not the term for a general criminal.  Reploids may deal in theivery, bounty hunting, brutality, or illegal arms trading, and not be considered Maverick.

If any seeming focus is given to humanity in 21XX it is because humans are more fragile and therefore vulnerable to the assaults of Mavericks.  Superiority in the world's social structure was never really shown in the X-series, although Mavericks have made that claim, but coming from one who wishes to dispose of humans entirely that doesn't mean a heck of a lot.  If anything the incidents with Copy Chips and Force Metal show that humanity is at times negligent of the risks of new Reploid technologies.  It was not until the Zero series that prejudice against Reploids was an issue.

In X6, humanity is not mentioned in regards to the disposal of Gate's Reploids.  There's nothing racist about that.  Alia, a Reploid, disposed of one of them herself.  Numerous researchers are Reploids.  Numerous commanders of armed forces are Reploids.  Gate speaks to the Maverick Hunters, a group of Reploids, expecting that they should dispose of Zero in the same manner as his works.  There's no reason it had to be a human who made the call to destroy Gate's Reploids.

maybe its because I have immigrant parents who I have become accustomed to hearing speak somewhat broken english, but I understood her just fine.
Agreed.  Although in my case it would probably be the fact that Xtreme2's dialogue is considerably more broken than X6's.  But even X5 wasn't all that clean as it had a ton of typos.

Posted on: November 06, 2009, 12:48:30 PM
Mijinion didn't do that until after he was disposed
So?  Mijinion does not seek to kill people for vengeance but rather for their perceived ignorance.  Which fits entirely with his pre-disposal attitude of ignoring set parameters for weapons testing.  He clearly had a superiority complex both before and after his disposal, and afterwards it is taken to a dangerous extreme; that in no way means he was harmless beforehand.

Quote
since when is thievery worthy of death?
I never said it was.  It is worthy of imprisonment, though, not encouragement as Gate did.  I simply said it disproves the statement of them being "not that bad".  Whether that warranted death, or whether the method of doing so was appropriate, is a different issue.

Quote
Scaravich was scared to death of X & Zero, because they're like the SS.
No thief wants to fight, they want to grab and run.  What do you expect?

Besides, he does want their data.  Consistent across both encounters, he merely dismisses Zero's as a thing of the past for reasons which are obvious after Gate's Lab 1.  Ignoring dialogue that doesn't suit your opinion doesn't make a convincing argument.

Quote
X & Zero still took their things by force.
Hardly.  Most of them insisted on fighting due to imminent infection; they considered themselves already doomed to a Maverick fate and preferred to fight while still of sound mind.  Hell, Squid Adler offered them the Energy Cart freely, regardless of his personal feelings.

Mattrex and Axle The Red are the only two that fall into the category you're describing, and they weren't exactly peace-keepers themselves.  One guards a weapon stash and the other is a theif.  And both, due to their preconceived notions about the Hunters, were extremely eager to fight them.

Even the turn-based strategy department got shafted so far as IR pointer use goes (Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn; frikkin' awesome game btw).  I wonder what the deal is.  Maybe they fear that panning the camera out too far would cause a lack of precision with the pointer?

3189
Nobody suggested "getting rid of them entirely", we are suggesting either bringing back stat experience which it replaced, or eliminating (or at least raising) the 510 cap.

(Also pokemon you used during the game would still be worthless because they'd have bad IVs/natures/moves and nothing would be able to fix that.)
That is the most ridiculous load of Mamoswine crap I have ever read.

If you think moves cannot be fixed you are not paying attention, given the wealth of tutors and deleters available in current games.  Moves can always be overwritten, at any level, any time.

IVs and Natures are not applicable; they are decided at time of capture and never change.  You can compare, as soon as they're caught, to see if you have gotten a satisfactory result, and if you haven't there is no reason to raise it throughout the game.  There is no reason to level-up to check Natures and the only reason to level-up to check IVs is if you're intending to use Hidden Power or you're just a stickler about having the max, thus requiring the exact values.  If you're only after something reasonably good, you can check at a low level.  Even your Level 5 starter in the R/B/Y IV system (which is half the range of current games) shows some difference in final stats from IVs.  IV-checking was being done long before the GBA generation hit, and was not in any way "hardcore tournament player" exclusive.  Even regular gaming magazines noted the difference in freshly captured same-level Pokemon and recommended comparing in order to get the best.  That was back when Stadium was new.

the other 6 weren't that bad
I don't agree with that statement.  Yes, Turtloid and Sheldon were honorable.  So was Wolfang.  But what about Heatnix?  He left his comrads die just because he was stronger than they were and didn't want to be held back.  Mijinion?  The guy was itching to terrorize people B-movie style with a giant robot.  Scaravich was a thief and Metal Shark Player was power-hungry, maybe not the most threatening of Reploids but by no means saints.

Yammark is kind of a big question mark.  His most dominant personality trait is paranoia as a result of his death, so we don't know much about what he was like before then.  Only that the forest wound up burned on his watch.  Might have been his fault or it might not.

I would consider X6 to be a good example of racism. Alia & X discuss how Gate's creations weren't really dangerous when they were disposed. I can't believe I'm mentioning this before Hypershell.
Mainly X6 doesn't mention that decision as coming from humans any more so than it does Reploids.  There's no racist theme to X6, rather the issue there would be paranoia of the ruling class and how far they'll push the moral line to extinguish their fears.  How justified those fears were varies with each individual 'roid, as mentioned above.

Even so, some of the Mavericks in X5 didn't really trust the Hunters and their distrust of the Hunters had pretty much been confirmed when they were defeated by X and Zero.
I think most of that is just the need to justify a boss battle while the bosses are still sane.

Honestly, when a falling space colony is threatening to annihilate the Earth, that is not the time to be nit-picking over the appropriate level of force to use against criminals.  They're risking the planet for the sake of their own bickering, talk about moronic.

Not necessarily.  Depends on the player, how much replaying they're doing, what tricks they know, etc.  I mean, Mario 1, 3, and World all have "get a frikkin' ton of extra lives" tricks.  3, perhaps the most critically acclaimed game of all, had one in the second freaking stage.

EV = Effort Value = the reason trained Pokemon of the same level and species are generally stronger than wild ones.

Get equipped with Serebii.net.

The fact that you can't max all of the stats actually allows players to be diverse and pick an EV spread that suits them.  Honestly, competitive Pokemon probably wouldn't be as interesting if everyone ran around with the exact same stats.
Which means something to players who research stacks of numbers to determine what is and isn't an excessive investment so that they can punch appropriate numbers into Smogon.  For the rest of us, who happen to be playing the actual games, 252/252 is not diverse.  The instances in which you WOULD want something different only make it more difficult to experiment.  If a move set change calls for a different focus on your stats, then barring a ridiculously large berry stock you have to raise a whole new Pokemon from scratch (and that's assuming your Pokemon is not Level 100 with intent to raise EVs over 100 in a single stat, which is unlikely).

Natures and IVs can accomplish any diversity goals by themselves.  The current EV system blows for one reason above all others: because it renders Pokemon actually used in-game worthless.  In the GB/C days, the Pokemon you played with were your best ones.  And that's the way it should be.

To add to that the current EV system is overly strict, allowing maxing of only 2 stats.  It severely damages the usefulness of mixed attackers.  Even a 765 EV limit would have at least allowed mixed attacks without hindering your damage dealt.  I don't think the phrase "SkarmBliss" would have ever been uttered if the GB/C stat experience system had been kept.

I also find the current system moronic in that your EVs from a given battle most often only go to a single stat.  The previous system gained all stats relative to the strengths of your opponent (literally their own base stats); it made a lot more sense.

Give me the old EV system (which is actually a system of Status Experience) of the GB and GBC Generations back!  ;^;
Why!? Why the new and retarded sytem with the max of 510 Effort Values? Make it to 1530 EV and I will be back to play Pokemon, the new generations.
I know I talked back about these things, but I really want it back, for goddamn long and glorious battles of the best and perfect pokemon!  O:<

Who actually came to that retarded idea, to exclude the possibility to maximaze all of your pokemons stats? I say donīt fix something what doesnīt need to be fixed.
I'm very much agreed personally, but I doubt that will happen without another generational cutoff.  Otherwise cross-game battles place the older games at a severe disadvantage.

First the most part right on, although I would argue that "overlooked" can qualify as "underrated" by itself.  If people aren't buying it, that says that there is a poor or at least indifferent opinion of it by the general public.  Whether that opinion is educated or not is a different issue.

I don't think ActRaiser is underrated, or at least not the first one.  But hell, they're both awesome anyway.

So, besides that, here's some others that come to mind:

-MegaMan X Command Mission (GCN)
-Pretty much the entire Legends and ZX series
-Godzilla: Monster of Monsters (NES)
-Godzilla Unleashed (Wii)
-Joe & Mac (SNES)
-Shadow The Hedgehog (GCN; it's no SA2, but it's better than most give it credit for)
-Sonic Adventure 2 (DC; less by the general public and more by the so-called "professional" press)
-Mario Kart Double Dash (GCN)
-Pokemon Colosseum (GCN)
-Rayman Raving Rabbids 2 (Wii)
-New Play Control: Mario Power Tennis (Wii; mostly by reviewers who cannot seem to find the Options menu)

......seriously?  You know, far be it for me to suggest taking a page out of Sony's book, but a TV output probably would have worked a lot better.  And besides, the original DSi can be viewed at pretty much any angle you want as long as you crank the backlight up.

You know, when *I* consider something to be nitpicky, that's pretty bad.

You know what I mean.  If you're going to go so far as to point out what is effectively scenery, you could just site the original X1, unless you believe those cars in the opening were driving themselves.
